  • The primary focus of this study was to explore the variation in dose distributions of electron beams between different types of construction structure of cut-out blocks embodied in electron cones, given that the structure is considered one of the causes of multiple scattered radiation from electrons which may affect dose distributions. For evaluation, two types of cut-out blocks, divergency and straight, manufactured for this study, were compared in terms of area of interval in distribution of dose, and flatness and symmetric state of surface being radiated. The results showed that divergency cut-out blocks reduced the lateral scattering effects on the thickness of cut-out blocks more substantially than straight ones, leading to more uniform dose distribution at baseline depth. Notably in divergency cut-out blocks, the high dose area decreased more significantly, and more uniform dose distribution was observed at the edge of the irradiated field. This points to a need to consider the characteristics of dose distribution of electron beams when setting up radiotherapy planing at the venues. Therefore, this study is significant as an exploratory work for ensuring high accuracy in dose delivery for patients.

  • In order to assess policies for training of radiological technologists and public health, this study was conducted from the mid July to the end of August 2003 to the subjects of 890 radiological technologists who work at 44 general hospitals in 16 cities and provinces of the country. For this purpose, an analysis of variance was performed by regions divided in Capital city, metropolitan areas and small- and medium-sized cities as well as by length of service. The outcomes look as follows : 1. From the analysis of replies to questions about the government health policy for radiological technologists, high scores were given to the items: "the Law of Medical Engineers should be revised from the pattern of supervision to assignment" and "the medical institutions should be legally obliged to secure certain number of radiological technologists". 2. From the analysis of variance by regions and groups, there was difference by regions in the items: "demand and supply of radiological technologists should be controlled" and "the license number of radiological technologists should be indicated in the medical insurance bill"(p<0.000). 3. From the analysis of variance as to training of radiological technologists, a significant difference was found by length of service in the items: "it is necessary to open a 4-year department of radiology and to revise curriculum" and "the legal system to indicate license number of radiological technologists in the medical insurance bill should be introduced". 4. The analysis of variance by length of service revealed that those who have served for more than 20 years favored "it is necessary to open a 4-year department of radiology and to revise curriculum" higher than those who have served for less than 5 years, showing a tendency the longer they work, the stronger they feel necessity".

  • In this case analysis, a patient was diagnosed with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in a 49-year-old female and showed persistent vasospasm after coil emboilzation in an aneurysm. The patient suffered from persistent vasospasm and performed angioplasty a total of 6 times. Transcranial color coded doppler (TCCD) was performed 12 times to monitor vasospasm. As a result, repetitive cerebral blood flow tests were low cost and safely performed without exposure to invasive radiation through the TCCD, and the repeatability and reproducibility of the test were confirmed with the capabilities of a trained professional radiological technologist.

  • An $^{125}I$-labeled resveratrol derivative 1 was synthesized. It was purified by reverse phase HPLC. Radiochemical purity of the product was more than 98%, and the yield was 35% (decay-corrected). Its biodistribution in tumorbearing mice was studied. The results showed that the highest radioactivity was located in intestine and stomach. The biodistribution profile suggests that compound 1 can be effectively used as a promising imaging probe for intestine and stomach.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare image quality of indirect digital radiography (IDR) system using the International Electro-technical Commission standard (IEC 62220-1), and to suggest the analysis of noise power spectrum (NPS) which were applied to IEC 62220-1 in medical imaging. In this study, Pixium 4600 (Trixell, France) which is indirect flat panel detector (FPD) was used. The size of image receptor (IR) is $7{\times}17$ inch (matrix $3001{\times}3001$) which performed 14bit processing and pixel pitch is $143{\mu}m$. In IEC standard, NPS evaluation were applied to RQA3, RQA5, RQA7 and RQA9. Because of different radiation quality, each region of interesting (ROI) were compared. The results of NPS indicated up to $3.5mm^{-1}$ including low Nyquist frequency. RQA5 indicated the lowest NPS and the others indicated higher NPS results relatively. NPS result of ROI a38 was higher than ROI a92 and this result indicated that there are more noise in left (cathode) than right (anode). This study were to evaluate NPS by using different radiation quality and setting the each ROI, and to suggest the quantitative methods of measuring NPS.

  • Recently, South and North Korea summits agreed to implement the cooperation and promotion of medical healthcare at the third inter-Korean summit in Pyeongyang on September 18, 2018. Therefore, the South Korean government and its affiliated organizations have been looking for ways to establish a specific plan for support and exchanges in the field of healthcare and medical technology. In the background of the above new policy, radiation medicine technology can also contribute to the exchange in the field of healthcare and science & technology for the peaceful coexistence of one Korea. In this review, we analyzed and showed the status of healthcare and radiation medicine infrastructure in North Korea in order to further develop a plan to share the benefits of radiation medicine with North Korea in the exchange of healthcare and science & technology.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pathologic results of hepatic parenchyma parameters such as liver parenchyma, liver surface, liver margin and liver, portal vein, spleen size, And to evaluate the usefulness of fibrosis progression and hepatic ultrasonography. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and prognostic value according to the stage of fibrosis and grade of inflammation were divided into two groups according to the morphologic variable "A" through ultrasound and "B" We evaluated the predictive value and predicted the variables to evaluate fibrosis in clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic liver disease. The sensitivity and specificity of hepatic fibrosis in hepatic morphologic variables and other size variables were highest in liver surface and edge. The morphologic parameters used in the evaluation of fibrosis were clinically relevant in distinguishing the fibrosis stage from the results of liver biopsy.

  • Objective: To assess the appropriate follow-up interval, and rate and timepoint of cancer detection in women with Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) 3 lesions on screening ultrasonography (US) according to the type of institution. Materials and Methods: A total of 1451 asymptomatic women who had negative or benign findings on screening mammogram, BI-RADS 3 assessment on screening US, and at least 6 months of follow-up were included. The median follow-up interval was 30.8 months (range, 6.8-52.9 months). The cancer detection rate, cancer detection timepoint, risk factors, and clinicopathological characteristics were compared between the screening and tertiary centers. Nominal variables were compared using the chi-square or Fisher's exact test and continuous variables were compared using the independent t test or Mann-Whitney U test. Results: In 1451 women, 19 cancers (1.3%) were detected; two (0.1%) were diagnosed at 6 months and 17 (1.2%) were diagnosed after 12.3 months. The malignancy rates were both 1.3% in the screening (9 of 699) and tertiary (10 of 752) centers. In the screening center, all nine cancers were invasive cancers and diagnosed after 12.3 months. In the tertiary center, two were ductal carcinomas in situ and eight were invasive cancers. Two of the invasive cancers were diagnosed at 6 months and the remaining eight cancers newly developed after 13.1 months. Conclusion: One-year follow-up rather than 6-month follow-up may be suitable for BI-RADS 3 lesions on screening US found in screening centers. However, more caution is needed regarding similar findings in tertiary centers where 6-month follow-up may be more appropriate.
