  • An advanced microcolumn is proposed which adopts a modified einzel lens structure. The newly designed einzel lens is composed of four electrodes. The two center electrodes are specially designed electrostatic quadrupole (EQ) einzel lenses having keyhole instead of circular apertures. We constructed the advanced microcolumn with the EQ-einzel lenses, and operated the newly designed microcolumn in single lens mode and double-lens mode. The preliminary results show that the EQ-einzel lens can improve the performance of the micro-column for large sample applications.

  • The effect of the M-window color mixing bar on the characteristics of color mixing and hot spots in the edge-lit backlight employing red (R), green (G), blue (G) light emitting diodes (LED) were studied in terms of the structure of the M-window color mixing bar. The rays from RGB LEDs entering the M-window bar were mixed by internal reflection and scattering inside the M-window bar so that the hot spots and color separation were minimized. The M-window bar was designed and fabricated and the simulation results are matched quite well to experimental data.

  • A direct-lit color-matching liquid crystal display using a lenticular lens array with grouped lens elements that image linear RGB light sources on the RGB subpixels of a color filter to enhance transmittance is designed, simulated, and fabricated. The RGB LED linear light sources were fabricated using small RGB LEDs in a linear array arrangement, and the lenticular lens array consisted of eight units of the same structure with a gap of 2.19 mm. The optical transmittance of the liquid crystal panel was improved by as much as 240% due to the color matching.

  • In this paper, we propose a nonlinear maximum average correlation height (MACH) filter for information authentication of photon counting double random phase encryption (DRPE). To enhance the security of DRPE, photon counting imaging can be applied because of its sparseness. However, under severely photon-starved conditions, information authentication of DRPE may not be implemented successfully. To visualize the photon counting DRPE, a three-dimensional imaging technique such as integral imaging can be used. In addition, a nonlinear MACH filter can be utilized for helping the information authentication. Therefore, in this paper, we use integral imaging and nonlinear MACH filter to implement the information authentication of photon counting DRPE. To verify our method, we implement optical experiments and computer simulation.

  • Purpose : This study investigated the visual functions of drivers aged over 65 year olds and drivers aged 50~65 year olds. In addition, difference of visual functions between professional drivers and normal drivers were investigated. Methods : Forty Driver aged over 65 year olds and 67 drivers aged less than 67 year olds were participated. All participants had more than 5 years of driving experiences and had no ocular pathology. Demographic data(gender, job, age, body condition) and visual functions such as contrast sensitivity(CS), stereopsis, glare recovery time and discomfort glare index were measured. Results : Constrast sensivity under photopic condition was higher with bus driver group. In addition, difference of CS at 12cpd and 18cpd were signifcantly different between normal drivers(1.57) and bus drivers(1.70) (p<0.05). There was no significant difference for glare recovery time, despite of trend of longer recovery time with age. Discomfort glare index was significantly different that normal drivers with more than 65 year olds had 3, taxi and truck driver presented almost 5 index score (p<0.05). Conclusion : Analysis of visual function of elderly drivers, it was confirmed that their visual functions decreased with age. Therefore, visual function tests such as CS, discomfort glare index and stereopsis in addition to current available test may need to be considered for drivers aged over 65.

  • Biocompatible hydrogels from 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomer containing various amount of alginate in the presence and absence of hydrophilic methacrylic acid (MAA) were synthesized in order for biomedical application. The antimicrobial effect and interaction with proteins for hydrogels were investigated in this study. MAA was introduced because it was expected to increase the amount of water content in the polymer which is an important factor for biocompatibility, and alginate was expected to enhance the antimicrobial activity. The antimicrobial effect against S. aureus and E. coli increased for all hydrogels as the amount of alginate and MAA contained. Presence of MAA further enhances the antimicrobial effect. Amount of adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) increased with increasing concentration of alginate whether MAA was present or not. Contrarily, the amount of lysozyme was not affected with increasing alginate concentration in the absence of MAA, while it decreased in the presence of MAA.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the degree of awareness toward child abuse behaviors, causes of child abuse, and the necessity of the parent education for child abuse prevention in the parents of elementary school students. Four hundred fifty parents of elementary school students participated for this study. The results were as follows. First, the parents generally were aware of emotional abuse and physical abuse, but not aware of neglect. In the comparison, according to parental education level and family income, highly educated parents and high-income parents were more aware of both emotional abuse and neglect. Second, most of the parents agreed on the causes of child abuse presented in the survey except the cause of having an unexpected child. Third, most parents agreed on the necessity of parent education programs for child abuse prevention. The discussion for the results and strategies for child abuse prevention was provided.

  • We introduce a new method for lens design that combines an eyepiece with the finite model eye, to make a corrected version of the accommodation-dependent Navarro eye. The optical system that we designed, which includes a human eye, takes into account the aberration of the eye and increases the performance of the image in the retina. In the design results, for the optimized eyepiece combined with the corrected Navarro eye, visual acuity is 1.40. Compared with the existing method of eyepiece design using inverse ray tracing with the corrected Navarro eye, MTF value was recorded as 0.079 to 0.283 at 160 lp/mm and visual performance was improved.

  • The cause of poor visual acuity was connected to the damage by the ocular trauma related. Especially the most cause of visual disorder was identified as irregular pupil by ocular damage. Therefore most patients stopped the wearing of the contact lens immediately by the visual decrease effects from irregular pupil disorder. But we had suggested that the contact lens wear was a very intensive visual therapy. We had identified the visual recover from several tests using the contact lens treatment.

  • To understand the corneal regeneration induced by bevacizumab, we investigated the structure changes of stroma and basement membrane regeneration. A Stick soaked in 0.5 N NaOH onto the mouse cornea and 2.5 mg/ml of bevacizumab was delivered into an alkali-burned cornea (2 ${\mu}l$) by subconjunctival injections at 1 hour and 4 days after injury. At 7 days after injury, basement membrane regeneration was observed by transmission electron microscope. Uneven and thin epithelial basement membrane, light density of hemidesmosomes, and edematous collagen fibril bundles are shown in the alkali-burned cornea. Injured epithelial basement membrane and hemidesmosomes and edematous collagen fibril bundles resulting from alkali-burned mouse cornea was repaired by bevacizumab treatment. This study demonstrates that bevacizumab can play an important role in wound healing in the cornea by accelerating the reestablishment of basement membrane integrity that leads to barriers for scar formation.
