This study compared the dental hygiene curriculum of domestic and overseas university and tired to provide the basic data for the development of standard curriculum that meets the education policy changes. Methods: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 1,192 participants including dental hygiene professors, dental hygienists and students. Data were collected by mail, telephone call from the professors and research assistants, email, and direct visit from June 10 to August 10, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of 4 questions of general characteristics of the subjects and 13 questions of dental hygiene curriculum. Results: The professors answered the development of integrated dental hygiene curriculum as the first priority(48.9%) and dental hygienists(51.6%) and students(42.6%) chose the development of new dental hygiene curriculum(p<0.001). In the analysis of validity of dental hygiene curriculum, the professors gave 3.29 to the validity of evaluation for basic job performance, and the clinical dental hygienists and the students gave 3.05 and 3.26 points, respectively(p<0.001). In relation to the necessity of the change of the dental hygiene curriculums, the professors gave 4.17 points which implied that curriculum change is the most important and necessary thing to do. The clinical dental hygienists and the students gave 3.90 and 3.47 points, respectively(p<0.001). Conclusions: The above-mentioned findings suggest that the revision of the current Korean dental hygiene curriculums is required. Therefore organizations related to dental hygiene including professor association and Korean Dental Hygienists Association should carefully rebuild the curriculum to improve the competency of dental hygienists. They should take the initiative in the development of a standardized curriculum.

  • Purpose: Although appointed as a national competency standards (NCS) based reserves department, the department of emergency medical technology, an NCS-based emergency department, is mainly focused on subject deduction for a NCS-based curriculum. Methods: Job models were formed and verified by combining the competency unit of NCS and the duty of Developing a curriculum (DACUM) based on the development procedure indicated in the guidelines for a NCS-based curriculum. The mapping method of the subject was performed by deducting necessary competency units (duty) and competency unit elements (task) by connecting with the composition items of NCS and DACUM. Results: Job models combined with job analysis for the NCS and DACUM were reduced to 13 competency units (duty) and 79 competency unit elements (task). A modified method such as the 1:N method was mainly applied as a subject-matching method with consideration of the competency level and size of the competency unit. Conclusion: It would be a desirable direction to develop a NCS-based curriculum in the center of the practice subject in consideration of the size of the competency unit and competency level of the competency unit element. The existing curriculum should be promoted as a field-oriented curriculum at the complementary level.

  • This study identifies and compares science content standards that are approved by departments of education in six states: California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas, and Virginia. Specifically, the study examines the goals/visions, the organizing/progression principles, the strands of science content, and earth science content found in the states curriculum standards compared to National Science Education Standards. Although many states followed the recommendations of NSES or Project 2061, the format and content of the state science standards reviewed are very diverse. The diversity seems to reflect the diverse perspectives and needs of the states. The results of this study provide Korean educators and teachers with useful models or examples to incorporate Korean national science curriculum guides into the science curriculum frameworks of their regions or schools.

  • This study examined the effects of a robotics curriculum based on "Bee-Bot" on the scientific problem-solving ability on 5-year-old children. A robotics curriculum was also designed to enhance their scientific problem-solving ability. This study examined a 4-week robotics curriculum was conducted 12 times for 4 weeks. For this study, 14 children in kindergarten A in Korea were set up as a treatment group and 18 children in kindergarten B in Korea as a control group. It was found that children in the treatment group who engaged in the robotics curriculum using "Bee-Bot" performed better on scientific problem-solving tests. This finding indicates that an enhanced planning experience using "Bee-Bot" was beneficial for improving young children's scientific problem-solving ability. The implications for designing appropriate curricula using "Bee-Bot" robots for kindergarteners are addressed.

  • Patient safety is achieved through systematic improvement based on the knowledge and willingness of medical professionals. A systematic longitudinal curriculum for patient safety is essential to prepare medical students and professionals. The purpose of this article is to introduce our experience with a 'workshop for developing a patient safety curriculum' and to compare the results with previous studies. The workshop comprising 15 medical professors and patient safety experts met for 2 days. The Consensus Workshop method was applied, collecting opinions from all of the members and reaching consensus through the following stages: context, brainstorm, cluster, name, and resolve. The patient safety curriculum was developed by this method, covering patient safety topics and issues, and teaching and assessment methods. A total of 7 topics were extracted, 'activities for patient safety, concepts of patient safety, leadership and teamwork, error disclosure, self-management, patient education, policies.' Issues, teaching methods, and assessment methods were developed for each topic. The patient safety curriculum developed from the workshop was similar to previous curricula developed by other institutions and medical schools. The Consensus Workshop method proved to be an effective approach to developing a patient safety curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze scope and sequence of undergraduate curricula in the department of physical education. For this purpose, this paper has used the types of undergraduate subjects, which are based on analysis tools on the scope and the sequence of the Department of Education major curriculum by Kim and Lee(2005). The major results of this study were as follows. First, the proportion of major content knowledge is far more pedagogical content knowledge. Second, the scope of Physical Education major curriculum is too much stressed on 'the subjects of major content' and on 'the subjects of specific area' than 'the subjects of major skills' and 'comprehensive problem solving'. Third, the Physical Education major curriculum has shown the specific sequence; introduction/foundation courses and theory courses, application courses orderly. Whileas, application course and synthesis course are slim to none.

  • Background: In the dental hygiene curriculum, efforts are being made to introduce an integrated curriculum based on the competency of a dental hygienist. Because there is a connection and overlap in learning contents between Dental Nutrition and Oral Biochemistry, which are basic dental hygiene subjects, it is possible to integrate these two subjects. This study aims to derive Nutritional Biochemistry as an integrated curriculum for Dental Nutrition and Oral Biochemistry, and to develop learning goals and competencies for Dental Nutritional Biochemistry. Methods: The learning contents of the integrated curriculum were composed by referring to the contents of the Dental Nutrition and Oral Biochemistry textbooks, and learning goals were derived from the learning contents. Moreover, competency was developed by analyzing the duties of a dental hygienist that can be performed through the learning goals. The Delphi survey was conducted twice to verify the content validity ratio (CVR) of the competence and the learning goal of the integrated curriculum. Results: In the first Delphi survey, the CVR for two competencies was 0.56 or higher. Moreover, it was revised based on expert's opinions, and as a result of the second Delphi survey after the revision, the CVR was either increased or maintained. Eighty-five learning goals were derived by referring to the textbook. According to CVR and expert opinions, after the first Delphi survey, the number of learning goals was reduced to 69. After the second Delphi survey, 68 learning goals were finally derived. Conclusion: The development process of the integrated curriculum conducted in this study can be utilized for integration between subjects in basic dental hygiene.
