This study was performed to investigate the relationship between Forward Head Posture(FHP) and Craniomandlbular Disorders(CMDs). Many studies reported that there was some relationship between them, however, there is still controversy. So It Is necessary to observe and compare many more patients with CMDs wirh normal controls. For the study 85 patients with CMDs and 37 dental students were selected as experimentals and controls, respectively. And the experimentals were classified Into two groups, that is, TMJ internal derangement group and muscle disorders group according to clinical diagnosis. For measuring the FHP, CROM(Cervical-Range-of-Notion)was used. This goniometer is composed of three part. First, gravity goniometer for flexion and extension. Second, magnetic compass and yoke for rotational movement. And last, forward head arm and vertebra locator for forward head posture. Next T-Scan, electronic occlusal analyzer, was used for recording of occlusal contact state. Other items such as maximum opening, lateral excursion, Helkimo's anamnestic index, and muscle palpation point from Friction's craniomandibular index were checked clinically by one examiner. The result of this study were as follows : 1. In male, control group showed much more measurement in resting forward head posture than did experimental group. But there were not significant differences between groups in female subject. From this results, the author contended that CROM is new measuring system and differ from other goniometers in some aspect, so that results should be re-evaluated 2. Mean value of maximum mouth opening in nearly all groups were greater than 40mm. and mouth opening had a significant correlation with occlusal force and with anamnestic index both sex. 3. Mean value of palpation point had not any correlationship with forward head posture in both sex, but there was significant difference between upper and lower group by rounded shouldes. 4. In summary, there was no significant relationship between forward head posture and sign and symptom of Craniomandibular Disorders.
This study was designed as a reference of vertical dimension in prosthetic treatment. The author analyzed six facial measurements, namely, (1) the height of lower face at maximum intercuspal position, (2) the height of lower face at resting position, (3) midface, (4) external ear and lateral wall of orbit, (5) interpupillary distance, (6) distance between pupil and mouth in the 100 Won-kwang Univ. Dental collage students(50 : male, 50 : female), who have normal occlusion, no posterior prosthesis, no experience of orthodontic treatment, and no deformity of facial soft tissue and no temporomandibular dysfunction. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The length of midface was shortest and the inter-pupillary distance was longest in both male and female. 2. The length difference with the length of midface and lower face at maximum intercuspal position was 5.64mm in male and 2.23mm in female, so the lower face was longer, 3. The facial measuring component, similar to lower face at maximum intercuspation, was the length of between medial wall of external ear and lateral wall of orbit. It's difference was 1.3mm in male, 1.77mm in female, and the lower face was shorter. 4. The difference of lower facial length in resting position and maximum intercuspation was 2.48mm in male, 2.24mm in female, the length of resting position was therefore longer. 5. The most clost correlation with the height of maximum intercuspal positioning lower face was resting lower face in both groups.
This double-blind controlled clinical and microbiological study was carried out to determine the effects of mouthwash preparation containing the mixture of herbal extract on developing plaque and gingivitis in the experimental gingivitis model. Following a 2-week normalization period, 34 dental students were distributed randomly into 1 of 3 treatment groups. They rinsed, under supervision, two times daily for 3 weeks with either normal saline(CT), 0.1% chlorhexidine(CH), or the mixture of herbal extract (HT), but refrained from any oral hygiene measures. The Plaque Index(PlI), the Gingival Index(GI), and the amount of Gingival Crevicular Fluid(GCF) were measured at week 0,1,2, and 3 of the experimental period, while the assessment of total wet weight of plaque and the phase contrast microscopic examination of plaque were performed at the end of experimental period(3 weeks). Subjects using mouthrinse preparation containing the mixture of herbal extract demonstrated negligible, if any, changes in the accumulation and microbial composition of plaque compared to those using normal saline, while the reduction of gingival inflammation by this mixture was highly significant and comparable to that of chlorhexidine. The results of this study indicate that the preparation containing the mixture of herbal extract do not provide any antiplaque benefits but is very effective in inhibiting the development of and in reducing existing experimental gingivitis when used as mouthrinse. Further research is needed to determine whether a significant reduction of gingival inflammation without a concomitant decrease in plaque accumulation is of clinical importance.
The establishment and/or registration of an optimal or physiologic relationship between the maxillae and mandible has long been a subject of considerable interest and controversy in dentistry. Centric relation has been generally accepted as a repeatable starting point for restoring the mouth. Recently, it has been claimed that an electronic device (Myo-Monitor) will produce an accurate, reproducible occlusal registration at the vertical and horizontal occlusal position most compatible with the muscular of each patient. The objectives of this study was to compare Myo-Monitor centric to centric relation at the points of reproducibility and anteroposterior, superoinferior position. A Vericheck instrument was employed for examining difference in the position and reproducibility of mandible reproduced by the various check bite records. For this study, 8 dental students and dentists who had no missing teeth and no difficulties of mandibular movement were selected. The following three different positions of the mandible were registered (a) centric relation manipulated by means of chin-point technique with Lucia-jig, (b) centric relation manipulated by means of bilateral technique, (c) Myocentric manipulated by Myo-Monitor. From this experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. Bilateral manipulated centric relation was more reproducible than Myocentric in anteroposterior and superoinferior position , but more reproducible than centric relation manipulated by means of chin point technique with Lucia-jig in anteroposoterior position. Centric relation manipulated by means of chin Point technique with Lucia-jig was more reproducible than Myocentric in right anteroposterior and superoinferior position. 2. Centric relation by means of chin point technique with Lucia-jig was posterior($2.16{\pm}0.78mm$) and superior($0.41{\pm}0.16mm$) to centric occlusion. Bilateral manipulated centric relation was posterior($1.68{\pm}0.10mm$) and superior($1.02{\pm}0.45mm$) to centric occlusion. Myocentric was anterior($0.75{\pm}0.70mm$), inferior($0.59{\pm}0.44mm$) to centric occlusion.

The dens evaginatus was a developmental variation which has arisen as a result of an evagination of inner enamel epithelium into the enamel organ. It has been given various. names by authors and was thought to be confined to Mongolian race. This study was performed to observe the incidence of dens evaginatus, and its ill-effects on the teeth and surrounding structures in 6356 Korean students and 10227 Korean adults. In plaster model, analysis was performed in accordance with forms and location of dens evaginatus on the. occlusal surface in the premolars. The pathologic changes caused by dens evaginatus were observed in paralleling periapical radiograms The results were as follows: 1. The prevalence of dens evaginatus in the student's group was 2.6%, and showed no sex predilection in the occurrence of evaginated teeth. 2. The sequence of dens evaginatus was in order of mandibular 2nd premolar, mandibular 1st premolar, maxillary 2nd premolar, and maxillary 1st premolar, respectively. 3. Of the cases with dens evaginatus, 73.5 % occured bilaterally. 4. The nipple form was the most frequent in respect of elevation of tubercle on the, occlusal surface. 5. In the base form of the tubercle, the occurrence of grooved form was the highest. 6. In the maxilla, those cases which the tubercle arose from the lingual ridge of the buccal cusp were most predominant. And in the mandible, those cases which the tubercle arose from the center of the occlusal surface were the most frequent. 7. The pulpal and periapical complications were shown in 24.4% of evaginated teeth in. periapical radiogram.
The dissimilarities between South and North Korea have persisted in spite of the reconciliation campaign by both countries. The situation of the cleft lip & palate of North Korea was very unclear until now. The purpose of this study is to understand all the current facts of cleft lip & palate in North Korea so that we can find ways of helping North Korea in this field of medicine. The present data and analysis are extracted from North Korean textbooks. The results are as follow. 1. In North Korea, patients with CLP are treated by oral surgeons or maxillofacial surgeons. The detailed contents about the CLP are well described in the North Korean textbooks for the dental students. 2. The terminology of CLP in North Korea has changed from time to time, but the present terminology not being so different from South Korean counterpart. So there will be no particular problems in mutual communication. 3. The main classification for CLP in North Korea originated from Kernahan & Stark's classification as is with South Korea. 4. The incidence of CLP is 1 : 1,000-1,200 in North Korea, which is lower than that of South Korea. There is, however, some difference between the North and South Korean CLP in detailed statistics. 5. We found the North Korean physicians have shown much interest in pursuing the etiology and the prevention of CLP. 6. The timing of CLP operations varied a lot in North Korea. There was recommendation by few for the operation in much late age than in South Korea. 7. The classical operation techniques of cleft lip have changed. For unilateral cleft lip Tennison-Randall method was replaced by Millard I method: and for bilateral cleft lip LeMesurier method was replaced by Veau III and Tennison methods. But for cleft palate Pushback palatoplasty has been utilized consistently.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of balancing interference on the activity of masticatory muscles and condylar path. Eight dental students of Won Kwang University without any symptoms of temporomandibular disorder and occlusal interferences, were selected for this study, The balancing interference was provided by construction and cementation of cast metal crowns on the upper and lower first molars. For the measurement of muscle activity, bioelectric processor (EM2, Myotronic Res., Inc., U.S.A.) was used and for the condular path, computerized electronic pantograph (Pantronics, Denar Corp., U.S.A.) was used and the myographic recordings were taken bilaterally from the anterior temporal, masseter and digastric muscles on rest position and on functions. These experimental procedures were done before cementation of experimental crown, three days after cementation of experimental crown, one week after, two weeks after and then one week after removal of experimental crown. The results are as follows: 1. The PRI score was increased at three days after application of balancing interference, and decreased at two weeks after. 2. Three subjects showed mild symptom of temporomandibular disorder at three or four days after application of interference, but the symptom was subsided in one or two weeks after application of interference. 3. One week after application of balancing interference, the activity of ipsilateral anterior temporal muscle in four subjects was decreased on gum chewing at experimental site. 4. Three days after application of balancing interference, the activity of ipsilateral anterior temporal muscle in three subjects was increased on gum chewing at non-experimental site. 5. The influence of balancing interference on the activity of anterior temporal, masseter and gigastric muscle was not prominent.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. Qualitative and semi-quantitative methods have been developed for TMJ sound classification, but the criteria presented are completely inhomogeneous. Thus, to develop more objective criteria for defining TMJ sounds, electroacoustical systems have been developed. We used Joint vibration analysis in the BioPAK system(Bioresearch Inc., Milwaukee, USA) as the electrovibratography. PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to examine the TMJ sounds with repect to frequency spectra patterns and the integral > 300 Hz /< 300 Hz ratios via six-months follow-up. MATERIAL AND METHODS. This study was done before and after the six-months recordings with 20 dental school students showed anterior disk displacement with reduction. Joint vibrations were analyzed using a mathematical technique known as the Fast Fourier Transform. RESULTS. In this study Group I and Group II showed varied integral > 300 /< 300 ratios before and after the six-months recordings. Also, by the comparative study between the integral > 300 /< 300 ratios and the frequency spectrums, it was conceivable that the frequency spectrums showed similar patterns at the same location that the joint sound occurred before and after the six-months recordings. while the frequency spectrums showed varied patterns at the different locations that the joint sound occurred before and after six-month recordings, it would possibly be due to the differences in the degree of internal derangement and/or in the shape of the disc. CONCLUSIONS. It is suggested that clinicians consider the integral > 300 /< 300 ratios as well as the frequency spectrums to decide the starting-point of the treatment for TMJ sounds.
The purpose of this study was to provide data on the development of educational programs to maintain oral health in adolescence by identifying the relevance of health behavior and symptom to adolescents. The subjects of this study were 27,919 high school students' using the 15th (2019) Youth Health Behavior Online Survey. The logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors influencing oral symptoms. The results showed that the recognition of gingiva pain was significantly lower in the subjects with male sex, lower education level, higher income level, and higher subjective perception of oral health. Higher the stress, higher the pain recognition, revealing a statistical significance. The awareness on bad breath-related symptoms was significantly higher in the adolescents with male sex, higher degree of stress, and lower frequency of daily toothbrushing. The lower awareness on halitosis was associated with higher income and higher subjective perception of oral health, showing a statistical significance. This study found that the health behavior of adolescents had an effect on their oral symptoms and the finding is expected to help develop programs for preventing those oral symptoms.
Objectives: The usage of medicinal plants as natural antimicrobial agents has grown in many fields including dental medicine. The aim of this in vitro study was three-fold: (i) to determine the chemical compositions of the Ferula gummosa essential oil (FGEO), (ii) to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of the oil with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX), (iii) to assess the toxic behavior of FGEO in different concentrations compared to 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX. Materials and Methods: Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to determine the chemical compositions of the oil. The disk diffusion method and a broth micro-dilution susceptibility assay were exploited to assess the antimicrobial efficacy against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mitis, and Candida albicans. The cytocompatibility of the FGEO was assessed on L929 fibroblasts, and compared to that of NaOCl and CHX. Results: Twenty-seven constituents were recognized in FGEO. The major component of the oil was ${\beta}$-pinene (51.83%). All three irrigants significantly inhibited the growth of all examined microorganisms compared to the negative control group. FGEO at $50{\mu}g/mL$ was effective in lower concentration against Enterococcus faecalis than 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX, and was also more potent than 0.2% CHX against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. FGEO was a cytocompatible solution, and had significantly lower toxicity compared to 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX. Conclusions: FGEO showed a promising biological potency as a root canal disinfectant. More investigations are required on the effectiveness of this oil on intracanal bacterial biofilms.
