The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of experimenter gender on pain report as well as the sex differences in pain threshold and pain tolerance. Cold pressor test and pressure pain threshold (PPT) test were performed on forty dental students by both of a male and a female experimenter separately with 1 day interval. The obtained results were as follows : There were no differences in pain threshold and pain tolerance between males and females when they were examined by the same gender experimenter in the cold pressor test, but when they were examined by the opposite gender experimenter the pain threshold of males was significantly higher than females. When the pain threshold was measured by the same gender experimenter, using a algometer, there was no differences in PPT between males and females. However, when the same measurements were done by the opposite gender experimenter, the PPT of males was significantly higher than females at anterior temporalis and inferior masseter. For cold pressor test, females tended to report lower levels of pain threshold and pain tolerance to a male experimenter than a female, but the differences were not significant. Although both pain threshold and pain tolerance were increased when males were examined by a female experimenter in the cold pressor test, the statistical significance was found only in pain tolerance. When subjects were examined by the opposite gender experimenter in the PPT text, females reported significantly higher levels of pain at inferior masseter and males reported significantly lower levels of pain at anterior temporalis and inferior masseter.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the mandibular asymmetry of the patients with the temporomandibular dysfunction. In this study, 20 dental students aged between 22 and 27 years, Chosun University, who did not possess any restoration and symptoms like the temporomandybular joint click, pain, and opening limitation of the mandible were selected as the normal group. And 80 patients who were analyzed into the patients with the temporomadibular dysfunction(TMD) were divided into group I as the internal derangement and group II as external derangement. Both the normal group and the TMD Group were faked submento-vertex cephalogram by routine methods after that the unilateral mandibular length(L) and the amount of mandibular asymmetry and deviation were measured and analyzed. The results were as follows : 1, Unilateral mandibular length(L) of the normal group and the TMD group were $112.7{\pm}10.20mm\;and\;102.65{\pm}8.10mm$ respectively (P<0.01). 2. The amount of mandibula asymmetry of the normal group and the TMD group were $5.95{\pm}4.63mm\;and\;5.68{\pm}4.35mm$ respectively (P<0.5). 3. The amount of mandibular deviation of the normal group and the TMD group were $6.00{\pm}4.07\;and\;4.67{\pm}3.40mm$ respectively (P<0.3). 4. In the TMD group, unilateral mandibular length(L) in the affected site and the non-affected site were $102.73{\pm}8.68mm\;and\;102.53{\pm}7.68mm$ respectively (P<0.5).
Tooth is the most important element in esthetic consideration on facial area. Tooth alignment which is in harmony with gingiva, lips, and face is also key element. The purpose of this study was to give a clinical discipline for restoration of gingival contour, which contains a ratio of maxillary 6 anterior teeth, research for gingival contour etc., in case of rehabilitation of maxillary anterior teeth. 300 Dankook university dental school students ,who is their twenties and free from periodontitis, participate in this study. The result was from each 70 males and females who had normal occlusion and tooth alignment. Length, width and length/width ratio of maxillary 6 anterior teeth were 0.74-0.81 in male, 0.81-0.84 in female. There was significant difference between male and female. The most deepest position of gingiva in maxillary central incisor and canine was located in distal part of teeth and maxillary lateral incisor was middle portion. In maxillary central incisors, gingival line of the most deepest point appeared significant difference between male and female (p<0.01) whereas there was no difference in lateral incisors and canines. Distance between interdental papilla apex and the most deepest portion appeared significant difference between male and female. Distance of the deepest position of gingiva is statistically significant except maxillary central incisors and lateral incisors. Standard deviation and mean of the width of labio-lingual were measured in cervical area and there was a significant difference both male and female.(p<0.01) From this result, we could get the mean of maxillary anterior gingival line and these results have great value in clinical guidance in studying maxillary anterior teeth.
It would be of importance to determine the neutral Tone by a resultant axis of relation on relation to the mandible in understanding the biomechanics of the mandibular movement. In this study, the neutral zone at the habitual opening and closing mandibular movements is the shape of the paths described by a minimum moving point occured as an average center of the determined instantaneous centers of rotation. Twenty, aged $23{\sim}25$, male dental students without Temporomandibular disorders and with normal occlusion clinically were selected for the study. The habitual opening and closing mandibular movements were recorded by the Gnathorecouder and analyzed by the computer program of a planer rigid body model and the determined method of a minimum moving point. The results obtained from this study were as follows. 1. The minimum moving points were placed in the body of the mandible except two subjects. 2. The mean of maximum displacements of a minimum moving point was $0.62{\pm}0.08cm$ on X-axis and $0.73{\pm}0.16cm$ on y-axis. 3. The mean of maximum displacements of a minimum moving point was $3.39{\pm}0.62cm$ 4. The position and shape of the neutral zone were determined by the position, displacements, and moving distances of a minimum moving point.
The purpose of this study was to obtain basic data needed to clinical diagnosis and treatment by investigating the occlusal wear facets and those related factors. Sixty-six subjects, ranging from 24 to 26 years of age without symptoms of stomatognatic system, were selected from dental students in Chosun University. The area of occlusal wear facets was measured and twenty subjects were selected, and divided into two groups (Group I and Group II). The Group I had small facet areas, and the Group II had large facet areas. These two groups were investigated into right and left side wear facet areas, vertical overlaps, occlusion types of working side, masticatory muscle activities, and asymmetry of right and left side masticatory muscle function. The results were as follows: 1. The average wear facet areas of all subjects was $22.84{\pm}88.95mm^2$, and Group I and Group II were $96.12{\pm}32.00mm^2$ and $372.94{\pm}65.63mm^2$ respectively. 2. The right and left wear facet areas of Group I were $46.72{\pm}14.36mm^2$ and $49.40{\pm}21.46mm^2$ respectively. The right and left wear facet areas of Group II were $175.27{\pm}45.75mm^2$ and $185.69{\pm}45.37mm^2$ repsectively. 3. The vertical overlap of Group I and Group II was $3.88{\pm}0.81mm$ and $2.88{\pm}1.14mm $ respectively. 4. Most of the Group I had Canine protection occlusion (80%), and most of the Group II had Group function occlusion (80%). 5. The masticatory muscle activities at rest position, maximum bite, habitual chewing, right and left unilateral chewing were greater in Group II than in Group I, especially in the masseter muscle of working side at right and left unilateral chewing. (P<0.01). 6. The asymmetry of right and left wear facets and masticatory muscle activities were greater in Group II than in Group I. (P<0.01).
The aim of this study was to investigate the electromyographic(EMG) activity of masticatory and cervical muscles according to chewing pattern in coronal plane during gum chewing. 70 patients with temporomandibular disorders and 30 dental students without any signs and symptoms of the disorders participated in this study. We measured the activity of masseter (MM), anterior temporalis(TA), sternocleidomastoideus(SCM) and trapezius muscle and recorded the chewing patterns using Biopak system synchronously. Chewing pattern was classified into S- or L-pattern by the midline opening path and short or long type by the lateral distance from midline. Obtained data were analyzed with SAS/STAT Program. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Generally, there was tended to be higher activity in the control group than in the patients group. 2. When comparing EMG activity according to preferred side, the muscle activity was tended to higher on the preferred chewing side than on the contralateral side. However, this difference is insignificant statistically 3. In unilateral affected patients, there was no difference in muscle activity between affected chewing side and unaffected chewing side except for the EMG of the temporalis anterior muscle. 4. Despite the varietal in each of the following variables, there mere no differences in EMG activity during gum chewing: chewing pattern in coronal plane and lateral distance of chewing. 5. The activity of SCM in chewing side was higher than that in contralateral side (p<0.001), but there was no difference in trapezius muscle. 6. In all of the control group, there was appeared L-chewing pattern than not involved the midline during preferred side chewing.
The author performed this study to investige the relationship between condylar movements recorded with Pantronicⓡ and mandibular rotational torque movements with BioEGNⓡ. For this study 56 patients with Temporomandibular disorders(TMD) and 30 dental students without any masticatory signs and symptoms were selected as patients group and control group, respectively. The items recorded with Pantronicⓡ(Denar Corp., USA) were immediate side-shift, progressive side-shift, angle of orbiting path, protrusive path and PRI. BioEGNⓡ(Bioelectric gnathography, Bioresearch Inc., USA) were used to measure the amounts of mandibular rotational torque movements in frontal and horizontal plane, and the distance of mandibular translation at incisal area. Amount of mandibular rotational torque movement depicted between the condyles was automatically analysed by angle and difference in frontal and horizontal plane. The obtained data were processed with SAS program and the conclusion of this study were as follows : 1. Mean values of items between patients group and control group in Pantronic measurements were not significantly different except in left protrusive path and in Pantronic Reproducibility Index(PRI). There were no significant difference of condylar paths by preferred chewing side and affected side between the two groups. 2. The amount of mandibular rotational torque movements were differed in frontal angle and difference on protrusion, and in frontal and in horizontal difference on left excursion between the two groups. But the amounts of translatory movements were actually same on all eccentric movements. 3. The amount of mandibular rotational torque movements with splint mere almost not changed from those without splint, with the exception of in horizontal measurements on protrusion. 4. The correlations of items between in Pantronic measurements and in BioEGN measurements wert not consistently, significant, however, generally the ISS related significantly with horizontal torque movement positively, and with frontal torque movement negatively on the contrary, the PSS showed positive correlation with frontal torque movement, and negative correlation with horizontal torque movement.
An observation and evaluation of the reproducibility of the mandibular movements has been a integral part of a test for mandibular function and dysfunction. After Pantographic Reproducibility Index(PRI) was introduced in dentistry, many authors have used the index for investigation of mandibular movement function, especially in condylar compartment. Howerer, the difficult and time-consuming work of instrumentation for getting the PRI has been a major obstacle in using pantograph. This study was performed to try a new mandibular reproducibility index, so-called BioEGN reproducibility index(BERI), calculated from mandibular trajectory recorded with BioEGN. 26 dental students without any signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and 22 patients with temporomandibular disorders took part in this study and classed to control group and patients group, respectively. Pantronic and BioEGN were used to record and calculate the indices, PRI and BERI. PRI had only one value, but BERI had two values of outgoing and incoming movement in each scale. With two scales of small and large, as a result, BERI had four values in this study. PRI corresponded to BERI in small scale on outgoing total movements. The data were calculated and analyzed with SAS/stat program and the conclusion of this study were as follows : 1. In every scales, in each movement, BERI on outgoing movement in control group was lower than that in patients group, respectively, but BERI on incoming movement was only different in one side movement, that was, left excursion. 2. The difference between BERI on outgoing movement and BERI on incoming movement was only shown in small scale on total movements, not in each movement, in control group. However, there was generally a positive correlationship between BERI on outgoing movement and BERI on incoming movement in each movement in both groups. 3. Simple statistics of PRI was similar to that of BERI on total movements in small scale, but there was a negative correlation between PRI and BERI on total movements in large sclae only in patients group.
Porphyromonas endodontalis is a black-pigmented anaerobic Gram-negative rod which is associated with endodontal infections and this microorganism possesses a potential for pathogenicity. The purpose of this study was to compare the membrane components of Porphyromonas endodontalis and Porphyromonas gingivalis and to study the immune reaction patterns of Porphyromonas endodontalis with patients with periapical lesion. Porphyromonas endodontalis (ATCC 35406), Porphyromonas gingivals serotypea (381), serotype b(W50), serotype c(A7A1-28) were cultured in anaerobic condition. Rabbit antisera were prepared by intravenous injection of formalized whole cells and human sera were obtained from patients and dental students. Indirect immunofluorescence method was used to study on the cross reaction between Porphyromonas endodontalis and Porphyromonas gingivalis serotype a, b, c antigen. Total membrane protein profiles of Porphyromonas endodontalis antigen were studied by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the reactivity of antigenic components of Porphyromonas endodontalis against sera of patients and rabbit anti-Porphyromonas endodontalis antisera were assessed by Immunoblotting method. The following results were obtained : 1. Antigens of Porphyromonas endodontalis has multiple antigenic components, and both patients with periapical lesion and normal healthy individual showed immune response to this. 2. Patients group and healthy individual group showed a diversity of immune reaction pattern but they showed immune response against 43kd protein. 3. Patients with periapical lesion showed more diverse immune response than healthy individual and in some patients, much more bands appeared to lower molecular weight protein. 4. According to indirect immunofluorescence and Immunoblotting study, Porphyromonas endodontalis did not share common antigen with Porphyromonas gingivalis serotype a, b, c.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to determine the average facial proportions and mandibular movement capacity of 316 first-year dental students who carefully recorded them on each other. MATERIALS AND METHODS. This early exacting clinical experience was closely supervised by the authors in Columbus, Ohio during 1969-70. Five vertical and six horizontal distances were measured on each subject's face. An ala-tragus line and an occlusal line were drawn on the left side of the face to determine if these two lines were parallel. Measurements of mandibular movements involved maximum normal and hinge opening at the incisors and maximum amounts of right, left lateral and protrusive excursions of the mandible. RESULTS. The ala width and distance between the tips of upper right and left canine cusps averaged (35.2 mm and 34.8 mm) but with very large individual variations. The distance between ala to occlusal plane lines was 29.9 mm at the tragus and 31.3 mm near the ala. The angle between orbitale and ala-tragus averaged 13.6 degrees. CONCLUSION. The upper lip length was the most variable and the distance between the pupils was the most stable of the eleven facial measurements. The ala-tragus line and the occlusal plane lines were for all practical purposes parallel. Maximum jaw opening averaged 51.2 mm which was 3.0 times larger than maximal hinge opening of 17.2 mm. The maximum right plus left side jaw excursions (9.2 and 9.4 mm) totaled 18.6 mm, 2.3 times more than the 8.0 mm mean maximum forward protrusion.
