  • In this study, polyvinylsiloxane impression materials were investigated to examine the characteristics of the impression materials that affect the accuracy of the final restoration. The flow property of impression materials which can reproduce the detail in the oral cavity and accurately duplicate it, and the tear strength and strain-in-compression which can cause problems when it is being removed from the oral cavity were studied. The results are as follows. 1. As for the flow properties of impression materials, Imprint II was 18.24${\pm}$0.30, which was the highest: and Twinz was 8.9${\pm}$0.62, which was the lowest. There was no significant difference among Imprint II, Examixfine, and Genie(p<0.05). 2. As for the tear strength of impression materials, Imprint II had the highest level, while Genie had the lowest value. There was no significant difference between Twinz and Genie(p<0.05). 3. As for the strain-in-compression, there were significant differences by impression material groups(p<0.05); the strain-in-compression of Examixfine was shown to be the highest at 5.56${\pm}$0.56, Twinz and Imprint II followed respectively, and Genie has the lowest at 3.19${\pm}$0.23. 4. Flow showed the correlation with tear strength but no significant connection to strain-in-compression. Also, there was no significant correlation between the tear strength and strain-in-compression (p<0.05). Making impression to reproduce oral tissue and tooth is an important part of making final restoration. The accuracy of impressions is influenced by the methods of taking impression or other condition. However the property itself of impression materials is the most essential and the materials with proper qualities should be selected.

  • This study investigated the polymerization inhibition effect of latex gloves on addition silicone impression material. Three different kinds of addition silicone impression materials and a natural latex gloves were used in this study. The results were as follows. 1. Compared to the control group, all of those three kinds of impression materials took longer curing time in order of unwashed, alcohol and washed group, on the other hand, degloving group had shorter curing time than control group(p<0.05). 2. By the type of impression materials, there was no significant difference observed between Exafine and Twinz in ungloved group, Exafine and Imprint II in unwashed group, and Exafine and Twinz in degloving group(p>0.05). 3. The degree of polymerization at 6 minutes after mixing impression materials was evaluated by dividing its range into score 1 to 5. All of the impression materials got score 5 in control group and degloving group, which implies perfect polymerization. In unwashed group, most of them appeared to be score 2 while score 3 were most frequently observed in alcohol group and score 4 in washed group. Thus each group showed differences in the degree of polymerization(p<0.05).

  • Purpose: Current common method of cytotoxicity evaluation for elastomeric impression materials use animal based cell lines, which the clinical relevance has been often questioned. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine the difference in results with both human based and animal based fibroblast cell line. Materials and Methods: Three types of fibroblast cells were used in this study; conventional mouse fibroblasts of L929, human gingival fibroblasts (HGF-1), and immortalized human oral fibrobalsts (hTERT-hNOF). Test on extract and test by direct contact using different commercially available elastomeric impression materials were carried out according to the international standards. Result: There was significant difference in cell viability between types of fibroblasts cell used, where HGF-1 showed highest cell viability and L929 the lowest. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, careful consideration must be given when selecting the cells and interpreting the results for cytotoxicity evaluation of elastomeric impression materials, where use of human based cell lines such as hTERT-hNOF would be appropriate for both ease of cytotoxicity test and clinical relevance.

  • Purpose : this study was to evaluate the fitness of adjustable dental impression trays on the Koreans : the trays used in the previous study by Kim et al. as part of the dental adjustable tray development project were improved and modified. Material and method: The patterns of tray were made through CAD-CAM process, and a simple silicone-base molds were made from them. The trial products were reproduced by pouring polyurethane into these molds. 30 male students(Wonkwang University, Dental College) and 30 female students (Wonkwang Health Science College, Department of Dental Hygiene) were selected and Reversible hydrocolloid impression materials were used for this study. The fitness of the trays was evaluated by measuring the width and length of impression materials of each measurement sites. Results and conclusion : 1. In adapting the trays inside the mouth, a uniform width of impression material(3 $\sim$ 6mm) was obtained in most sites due to the tooth stops and the inclined planes accommodating the width of the tray 2. The thickness of impression material in the central part of the palate was a mean 9.8mm, which turned out to be somewhat thick. 3. In the mandible. the thickness of the impression material in the lingual side inferior to the contact point of the 1st and 2nd molars was 2.7mm, and the thickness of the material in the lingual side of the rearmost margin was 2.5 mm. The thickness of the impression material of these areas was relatively thin.

  • Regardless of the type of impression being made, the tray is the most important part of the impression-making procedure for completely edentulous patients. Dentists have to make use of a combination of rigid, thermoplastic, and resilient materials and control step-by-step procedure from irreversible hydrocolloid impression to definitive cast fabrication. For successful edentulous impression, some considerable clinical tips were guided.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the contact angles and wettability of conventional dental stones and improved dental stones and newly developed dental stones on several impression materials. Materials included in this study were several dental stones and newly developed dental stone ; 2 type III stones (Snow Rock, New Diastone), 6 type IV stones(Crystal Rock, Vel Mix, Fuji Rock, Tuff Rock, Resin Rock and newly developed dental stone) and 1 type V stone (Die Keen). Contact angles on the impression materials were measured with contact angle measuring device. Ten specimens for each material, total 180 specimens were made on void entrapment model. The two impression materials (Handae, GC) were used to produce 9 groups of die stone casts form void entrapment model. Voids in the stone casts were counted under a stereoscopic microscope. The grad for the reproduction ability of each materials on the void entrapment model was calculated from the casts by one examiner. From the experiment, the following results were obtained : 1. The newly developed stones showed smallest contact angle. Type III dental stone had larger contact angles than type IV and V stones. Contact angle was much affected by the impression materials. 2. Resin containing die materials such as Tuff Rock and Resin Rock had smallest void number than any other groups. 3. In comparing reproduction parameters, Tuff Rock and Resin Rock presented superior results, while Vel Mix showed lowest reproduction ability.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare wettability and setting time of twelve polyvinylsiloxane impression pastes. For comparing the wettability, the contact angle of a water drop on the impression materials was measured. It is important for impression materials to have higher wettability when trying to make impressions of interproximal spaces and gingival crevices. The higher wettability the better the material will flow into these spaces and the more accurate the impression. An ideal impression material will have adequate working time but a fast intraoral setting time. The clinician needs time to inject material into the sulcus, place the impression material into the tray and position it in the mouth, but the material should set rapidly to reduce time in the patient's mouth. It is considered that the results obtained in this study will provide guideline information for the manufacturing of impression materials and for selecting appropriate impression materials.
