Objectives: This study analyzed the views, awareness and performance of vocational ethics of dental hygienists employed in health centers. Methods: A survey was conducted on 197 dental hygienists who attended the National Health Association job training session. SPSS WIN 22.0 was used to analyze the results. Results: The vocational ethics that dental hygienists valued the most was integrity, followed by expertise and integrity. The awareness level of vocational ethics was 93.3% and observance level was 97.4%. The methods of information gathering were 34.5% 'off-the-job training' and 34.0% for 'at work or employment SOP' The highest of vocational ethics performance was responsibility, marked 4.25. Significant differences were observed in fairness, cooperation and vocation between different general characteristics such as age, employment history, marital status, work region, and major responsibilities. Conclusions: It is necessary to evaluate the vocational ethics performance of dental hygienists based in health centers in order to develop programs for ethical guidelines and institutional principles to help decision making.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to examined the demand for the change in Korean dental hygiene curriculum. This study compared the dental hygiene curriculum of domestic and overseas university and tired to provide the basic data for the development of standard curriculum that meets the education policy changes. Methods: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 1,192 participants including dental hygiene professors, dental hygienists and students. Data were collected by mail, telephone call from the professors and research assistants, email, and direct visit from June 10 to August 10, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of 4 questions of general characteristics of the subjects and 13 questions of dental hygiene curriculum. Results: The professors answered the development of integrated dental hygiene curriculum as the first priority(48.9%) and dental hygienists(51.6%) and students(42.6%) chose the development of new dental hygiene curriculum(p<0.001). In the analysis of validity of dental hygiene curriculum, the professors gave 3.29 to the validity of evaluation for basic job performance, and the clinical dental hygienists and the students gave 3.05 and 3.26 points, respectively(p<0.001). In relation to the necessity of the change of the dental hygiene curriculums, the professors gave 4.17 points which implied that curriculum change is the most important and necessary thing to do. The clinical dental hygienists and the students gave 3.90 and 3.47 points, respectively(p<0.001). Conclusions: The above-mentioned findings suggest that the revision of the current Korean dental hygiene curriculums is required. Therefore organizations related to dental hygiene including professor association and Korean Dental Hygienists Association should carefully rebuild the curriculum to improve the competency of dental hygienists. They should take the initiative in the development of a standardized curriculum.
Background: Dental hygienists undergo 3 or 4 years of college education, and dental hygienist education must receive continuous feedback through evaluation. The purpose of this study was to compare the educational performance of students from the Department of Dental Hygiene in 2018 with those from other departments in the healthcare field. Methods: We used data from the National Assessment of Student Engagement in Learning, conducted by the Korean Educational Development Institute in 2018. The survey data of 55 dental hygiene students and 60 healthcare students at K University were provided after excluding all identifying information. An independent t-test was used for comparisons between the Department of Dental Hygiene and other healthcare departments. Results: Regarding class-related activities, dental hygiene students were passive in presentations, discussions, and projects and had significantly lower grades in cooperative learning and challenging learning. Regarding extra-class activities, dental hygiene students had significantly lower global learning and external experiences, domestic experiences, club activities, and interactions with professors. Regarding learning outcomes, students had significantly lower grades in writing, speaking, critical and analytical thinking, data evaluation, understanding of data meaning, problem-solving ability, goal setting and execution, core content extraction, human and material resource utilization, creative convergence thinking, statistical understanding and analysis, information technology use, collaboration, sense of community, stress management, time management, and foreign language proficiency. Conclusions: Dental hygiene education requires innovation in educational methods and efforts of instructors to improve poor learning activities and outcomes.
Objectives : It is considered that the education of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the preparation for quick response to cardiac arrest are very important to dental hygiene students who get employed in dental clinics and hospitals after graduation. The purpose of the study is to investigate the perception, attitude and knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) in dental hygiene students and to provide basic data to educate CPR education program for the dental hygiene students. Methods : The study subjects were 260 students in the department of dental hygiene in J city health college. A self-reported questionnaire was conducted from May 1st to 31st 2013. A frequency analysis and x2-test was carried out to confirm the general characteristics of the 260 respondents. Results : The perception rate of the CPR was 55.8%(145 persons). There were positive correlations between perception and attitude of CPR (r=.202) and attitude and knowledge(r=.249). Conclusions : CPR performance is the vital to the cardiac arrest victim. So it is necessary to educate the dental hygiene students in case of emergency situation. It is necessary to educate CPR and basic life support (BLS) in dental hygiene students.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education in dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by fifty dental hygiene students in May 2016 before and after CPR education. The questionnaire consisted of knowledge, attitude, confidence, and performance of CPR skill. Performance test by professionals was measured to evaluate capability of skill after CPR education. Results: Scores of the knowledge increased from 4.35 to 12.24 after education (p<0.001). Scores of attitude increased from 51.86 to 58.92 (p<0.001). Scores of confidence changed from 56.66 to 85.02 (p<0.001). Scores of self-capability of skill increased from 44.90 to 74.02 (p<0.001). 5. The average score of capability of skill by professional test was 24.47. Conclusions: CPR education improved the knowledge, attitude, confidence and capability of skill in dental hygiene students. The development and education of CPR program will make the students perform bystander CPR in the emergency situation actively.
The job of dental hygienists is specialized, and they have to be capable of performing their primary duties including prevention of oral diseases, oral prophylaxis, and oral health education. To ensure their successful job performance, dentists should have an accurate understanding of their duties and need a change of mind-set about them. And there should be written legal and concrete regulations on the coverage of their work in order to let them boost their job performance with pride and a sense of responsibility. The purpose of this study was to examine the actual roles and job performance of dental hygienists in clinical field in an attempt to discuss the substantial job performance of dental hygienists and their job enlargement. It's basically meant to help enhance the efficiency and quality of medical services. The subjects in this study were 471 dental hygienists in dental clinics, dental hospitals, university hospitals and general hospitals across the nation, on whom a survey was conducted in person from March 2 to 25, 2005. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS Win 12.0 program, and the findings of the study were as follows: 1. The major jobs they currently performed included oral health education, hospital management, simple duties, extensive dental hygiene duties and joint treatment assistance. They hoped to continue to be responsible for oral health education, preventive treatment and extensive dental hygiene duties. 2. As for their current job by age, extensive dental hygiene duties, preventive treatment, joint treatment assistance, preserving treatment, prosthetic treatment and pediatric treatment were most conducted by the dental hygienists who were at the age of 26 to less than 31, and those who were at the age of 31 and up were most responsible for hospital management and simple duties. 3. As to job awareness by workplace, their workload was statistically significantly different according to their workplace. The hospital employees took care of more work than those in clinics. 4. Concerning job awareness by age, the younger dental hygienists suffered more role conflicts and were given a less free hand in work handling, the middle-aged group's job was uncertain. Legal regulations about the coverage of their work should be prepared in detail as a measure to stir up their responsible job performance and pride. In order to take advantage of experienced dental hygienists, their duties should be more differentiated and specialized, and their working conditions should be improved to boost their job satisfaction. That is, they should be given ample chances for promotion and serving as a middle manager and be given fair treatment according to their career. If their work is accurately darified and specialized based on career, it will boost the efficiency of dental treatment. Dental hygienists also should direct sustained efforts into self-development in order to become a skilled and professional oral health personnel.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate awareness and performance of infection control by dental hygienist. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was answered by 239 dental hygienists working in dental clinics from September 7 to 18, 2016 in Gwangju city & Jeonnam region after explaining the purpose of the study and receiving the informed consent. The questionnaire consisted of sociodemographic characteristics and awareness and performance of infection control using Likert 4 point scale. Results: Average of Infection control awareness was $3.33{\pm}0.38$, average of infection control Performance was $3.04{\pm}0.37$ (p<0.05). The awareness and practice of dental equipment management showed the largest difference. The awareness of infection control by general characteristics varied according to position, number of dental units, number of employees, Infection control needs, Received infection control training experience, infection experience, infection control guideline (p<0.05). The relationship between infection control awareness and Infection control performance was r = 0.624 (p<0.001), indicating positive correlation. Conclusions: To improve awareness and performance of dental hygienist's infection control, regular received infection control training experience is needed. It is considered that the dentist's active cooperation is needed in shortening the life span of the dental equipment due to the Infection control performance and securing the quantity.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between job performance, job importance and job satisfaction in dental hygienists' preventive dental treatment. The subjects in the questionnaire survey were 275 dental hygienists in the Mokpo from October 7 to October 14, 2016. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Ver. 18.0. According to the analysis of the job performance, and job importance of preventive dental care tasks, the total score of 3.35±0.60, 3.85±0.51, respectively. Job performance was highest in scaling (4.24±0.90), and lowest in oral microbiological examination (2.40±1.14). Job importance was highest in scaling (4.49±0.77), and lowest in oral microbiological examination(3.04±0.85). As a result of analyzing the job satisfaction of preventive dental care tasks, the overall average was 3.23±0.40 out of 5 points. Patient relationship was the highest (3.71±0.66), working environment 3.55±0.77, staff relation 3.48±0.63, dental organization 3.27±0.73, professional support 3.21±0.67 and prospect of career 3.13 ± 0.58. remuneration 2.80±0.58, and workload 2.68±0.57, respectively. The correlation coefficients were 0.263 (job performance and job satisfaction), 0.211 (job importance and job satisfaction), and 0.461 (job performance and job importance) statistically significantly. The results of this study suggest that the higher job performance and job importance in preventive dental treatment, the more job satisfaction. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the dental hygienist's preventive dental treatment tasks and provide educational support to do this. Also, it is necessary to develop an oral preventive management program to improve the professionalism of the dental hygienist and improve job satisfaction.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the influencing factors on English interest and anxiety in dental hygiene students. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 1,040 dental hygiene students in six universities in Busan and Gyeongnam from April 1 to 30, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, foreign language performance anxiety scale, and English interest. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regressions. Results : Those who travelled abroad tended to have a liking for English. English credits significantly influenced on English interest. and employment. The period of English study was proportional to interest and grade of English. Conclusions : The interest and anxiety for English was the major factor to improve the mastery of English. The dental hygienists must try to improve the mastery of language proficiency.
Background: This study is to identify the factors that affect job satisfaction, psychological ownership, and job engagement of dental hygienists on job performance and use them as basic data for manpower management of dental hygienists. Methods: The survey was conducted by 344 clinical dental hygienists working in dental medical institutions. The collected data is PASW Statistics ver. 20.0 was used to analyze. Results: The job satisfaction level of the dental hygienist was 3.38±0.52, and the question that 'I feel that my ability to solve problems has improved compared to the past.' was 3.92±0.80. There were significant differences in job satisfaction, psychological ownership, and job engagement according to general characteristics in age, marriage, education, career, current work experience, and position.
