Consciouess of Biomedical Ethics in Dental Hygiene Students and Non-Dental Hygiene Students (치위생계열 학생과 비 치위생계열 학생의 생명의료윤리 의식)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data necessary for educating dental hygiene students by establishing a desirable sense of ethics values. In this descriptive research, 97 dental hygiene students and 100 non-dental hygiene students (in other health related fields) from Daegu Gyeongbuk City were selected. Tools used for data analysis were descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test and correlation analysis with SPSS/WIN 17.0 version. Average scores for consciousness of biomedical ethics in dental hygiene students was 2.87, and in non-dental hygiene students, 2.82. When differences in the consciousness of biomedical ethics of dental hygiene and non-dental hygiene students were compared, dental hygiene students had significantly higher scores for prenatal diagnosis of fetus, right to life of newborn, right to life of fetus, brain death, artificial abortion, but significantly lower for organ transplantation. Variables which influenced consciousness of biomedical ethics were etihcal values in the dental hygiene students and intent to attend a class in biomedical ethics, quantity and quality of experience of hearing for biomedical ethics and religion in the non-dental hygiene students. Continuing educational programs need to be considered and attention given to the significant variables that can promote consciousness of biomedical ethics in dental hygiene students.

Vocational ethics performance of health center-based dental hygienists (보건소 치과위생사의 직업윤리 수행정도)

  • Objectives: This study analyzed the views, awareness and performance of vocational ethics of dental hygienists employed in health centers. Methods: A survey was conducted on 197 dental hygienists who attended the National Health Association job training session. SPSS WIN 22.0 was used to analyze the results. Results: The vocational ethics that dental hygienists valued the most was integrity, followed by expertise and integrity. The awareness level of vocational ethics was 93.3% and observance level was 97.4%. The methods of information gathering were 34.5% 'off-the-job training' and 34.0% for 'at work or employment SOP' The highest of vocational ethics performance was responsibility, marked 4.25. Significant differences were observed in fairness, cooperation and vocation between different general characteristics such as age, employment history, marital status, work region, and major responsibilities. Conclusions: It is necessary to evaluate the vocational ethics performance of dental hygienists based in health centers in order to develop programs for ethical guidelines and institutional principles to help decision making.

Analysis of research ethics education needs impact factors (연구윤리교육 필요성 인식 및 영향요인)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the professors, who teach the dental hygiene program in Korea, on the awareness of the research ethics education check. And attempt to provide and promote a basic foundation for future research ethics education Methods : Questionnaire survey was carried out targeting 119, who teach the dental hygiene program. The collected data was performed frequency & percentage, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Results : 1. As recognition about research ethics education needs, they expressed the biggest recognition that research ethics education is required($3.66{\pm}0.57$) 2. Regarding the correlation between students needs research ethics education and interested research ethics education had a statistically significant correlation of r=0.381 which was the highest correlation factor. 3. Research ethics education taking institutions, 39.4% respondents experienced the biggest national research institutes. 4. Between general characteristics and research ethics education recognition level, they were statistically significantly different with age and major course(p<0.05). 5. The affecting factors on the research ethics education were teaching career and number of articles published as the first author, explained 12.8%(p<0.001). Conclusions : Research ethics education is desperately needed. Therefore I will insist the case based approach in the research ethics education program with the format of a stand course.

The levels of the vocational awareness and the professional ethics recognition in clinical dental hygienists (임상치과위생사의 직업인식 및 직업윤리 의식정도)

  • Objectives: This study was carried out for the purpose of examining the levels of vocational awareness and the professional ethics recognition in the clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A survey was conducted targeting 500 members who participated in the supplementary education program for dental hygienists in the first half of 2017. Total 328 subjects' materials were analyzed. Results: A reason for working in terms of the occupational identity was very high with 81.4% in 'aiming to earn money'. A goal of working was the highest with 41.5% in 'financial independence'. The professional ethics approach level was indicated to be the highest with 3.33 points in the domain of human relation. It was shown to be in order of the job satisfaction level with 3.21 points, followed by the lifelong working with 3.17 points, the vocational ethics observance with 2.95 points, the workplace satisfaction level with 2.82 points, and the job anxiety level with 2.65 points. The domain in the job anxiety level according to general characteristics was indicated to be significantly high in the higher age and work career in case of the married and in case of Seoul as a workplace. The domain in the professional ethics observance was shown to be significantly high in the higher work career in case of the married and in case of Gyeonggi Province as a workplace. The domain in the lifelong working was indicated to be significantly high in case of the married. Conclusions: For the establishment of the right professional ethics as a dental hygienist and for the securement of its practice starting from the education for the dental hygiene department, the development of educational program will be needed aiming at the approach to the professional ethics and the reinforcement in the vocational ethics recognition.

The influence of ethical propensity on dental hygiene professional intuition and ethical competency (치위생 전공학생의 윤리적 성향이 치위생전문직관과 윤리역량에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the types of ethics, professional intuition, and ethical competencies of students majoring in dental hygiene and to provide appropriate dental hygiene education by confirming the relationship between them. Methods: A survey was conducted from March 2 to March 30, 2021 using a questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using chi-square test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: Regarding the ethics type, absolutists accounted for 36.1%, relativists for 33.8%, subjective for 16.5%, and exceptionalists for 13.5% of the respondents. Dental hygiene professional intuition scored 3.53 points, and ethical competence scored 3.52 points. The points for professional intuition and ethical competence according to the type of ethics were 3.64 and 3.61 for the absolutist, 3.55 and 3.53 for the relativist, 3.47 and 3.53 for the exceptionalist, and 3.27 and 3.37 for the subjective, respectively. The propensity of idealism showed a positive correlation with dental hygiene professional intuition and ethical competence (p<0.001). The tendency of relativism correlated with ethical competence, and ethical competence correlated with dental hygiene professional intuition (p<0.05). Conclusions: The implication of this study is that students majoring in dental hygiene must have clear and high dental hygiene professional intuition and ethical competence in order to demonstrate their potential positively. Therefore, ethics education and proper decision-making training must be included in the dental hygiene curriculum.

Evaluation of the Confidence and Learning Effects of Dental Hygiene Ethical Decision-Making through Dental Hygiene Ethics Subjects (치위생(학)과 학생들의 치위생윤리 교과목을 통한 치위생 윤리적 의사결정에 대한 자신감과 학습성과 평가)

  • Background: This study evaluated the learning outcomes of dental hygiene students' ethical consciousness and ethical decision-making competence through dental ethics courses conducted in some universities. Methods: The subjects were 35 and 29 fourth-year dental hygiene students at G University in the first semester of 2021 and 2022, respectively, and 53 and 43 third-year dental hygiene students at D University, respectively, for a total of 160 students. After implementing the dental hygiene ethics course, classroom performance was evaluated in terms of moral sensitivity, confidence in making ethical decisions, classroom practicality, learning outcomes, and class satisfaction. Statistical analysis was conducted using independent t-test and paired t-test, and the statistical significance level was 0.05. Results: Both universities reported an increase in moral sensitivity and confidence in ethical decision-making after the course (p<0.001). Classroom practicality and class satisfaction for the dental hygiene ethics course did not differ between disciplines and were rated positively with a score of 4 or higher (p>0.05). Learning outcomes were higher among 4-year students than 3-year students (p<0.001). Conclusions: It was evaluated that the ethics in dental hygiene curriculum can strengthen students' competence in ethical decision-making, including moral sensitivity and confidence in solving ethical problems in dental hygiene.

Influencing factors on perception of patient medical information protection in dental hygiene students (치위생(학)과 학생의 환자 의료정보보호 인지 관련요인)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to examine the correlation and influencing factors among ethics position, self-esteem, and perception of patient medical information protection in the dental hygiene students. Methods: This is a cross sectional study using the structured questionnaire. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 202 dental hygiene students using the stratified sampling method from September 1 to November 1, 2013. The questionnaire was modified and complemented from Ethics Position Questionnaire (EPQ). The questionnaire included EPQ, self-esteem, and perception of patient medical information protection. Data were analyzed by independent t-test, one way ANOVA, Duncan's multiple comparison analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0 program. Results: There was a positive correlation among all the variable including idealism position, self-esteem, and perception of patient medical information protection, The factors influencing on the perception of patient medical information protection were idealism position (${\beta}=0.271$, p<0.001) and self-esteem (${\beta}=0.248$, p<0.001). The corrected explanation power of the model was 15.1%. Conclusions: As the idealism position and self-esteem become higher, the perception of patient medical information protection gets higher. Therefore, this study suggests that it is needed to develop and vitalize implement the appropriate programs enhancing ethics consciousness, proper position, and self-esteem in the dental hygiene students receiving the education for their professionalism in the dental hygiene curricula.

Ethical dilemma and related factors in some clinical dental hygienists (일부 임상치과위생사의 윤리적 딜레마와 관련 요인)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the level of ethical dilemma and related factors in some clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 290 clinical dental hygienists in G metropolitan city from January 5 to February 27, 2015. The instruments used for this study were the modified ethical dilemma scale developed Lee, Kim and Park. The questionnaire consisted of dental hygienists & subjects(4 items), dental hygienists & professionals(12 items), dental hygienists & partners(7 items), and medical information(31 items). The questions were measured by Likert 5 points scale. The statistical analyses include descriptive statistics, t-test and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program. Results: Dental hygienists perceived ethical dilemma scored 3.35 and 3.24 except medical information. Professionals and partners in sub-domain of ethical dilemma by experience of ethics education and ethical conflict were high and showed statistically significant difference. The strongest predictor of dental hygienists and subjects was job satisfaction. The strongest predictor of dental hygienists and partners was adequacy of ethics education in college/university. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to develop the professional dental hygiene program for the prevention of ethical dilemma in dental hygienists and to make ethics education for ethical decision making.

Derivation of professional ethics application criteria for dental hygienists using the Delphi method (델파이 기법을 이용한 치과위생사 직업윤리 적용기준 도출)

  • Objectives: We classified items required for dental hygienists' ethics training by domains. We administered a survey on experts using the Delphi method to collect opinions for guiding future trainings. Methods: 33 participants were selected and analyzed using the Delphi method thrice. Results: For relationships with patients, the item "1.3.1.1 I can keep the confidentiality of the information obtained from patients, including mature minors, related to their specific disease and treatment during medical care as well as other personal information of the patients." had the highest mean value (mean=4.88). For medical and social relations, "2.3.2.2 I can understand how staff provide dental services as a team and explain a dental hygienist's roles and responsibilities that enable a team to function effectively." had the highest mean value (mean=4.85). For individual specialized fields, "3.1.1.1 I can explain the roles and responsibilities in public health of individuals, the public, the state and professional dental hygienist." showed the highest mean value (mean=4.82). Conclusions: We identified 3 categories, 14 sub-categories, and 53 items on the scope of training and standards for ethical competencies for practical applications in professional ethics training of dental hygienists.

A Study on Ethical Job Behavior Level of Some Dental Hygiene Students

  • The purpose of this study was to find the ethical values of dental hygiene students, to establish the right ethical values of the students, and to provide a fundamental material for the ethical education direction and curriculum of the students. In order to examine the general characteristics and ethical job behavior level among dental hygiene students, a research was conducted from 1st April 2017 to $30^{th}$ June 2017 through selecting freshman, sophomore, junior and senior students currently enrolled in the department of dental hygiene at 5 different colleges as the subjects. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS 22. The frequency analysis was used to examine their general characteristics. The independent t-test was used to examine their ethical job behavior according to their religion, hospital practice experience and code of ethics as a dental hygienist, and the one-way ANOVA was used to examine their ethical job behavior according to grade-specific characteristics. Lastly, the Scheffe's post hoc test was conducted. The significance level was 0.05. Given the results, ethical job behavior was significantly different between the group of students with religion, the group of students with hospital practice experience, different school year students, and the group of students aware of code of ethics as a dental hygienist.
