Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the adaptation to college life of dental hygiene students. Methods: A total of 300 students in the 3-year course, and 200 students in the 4-year course at the Department of Dental Hygiene, were selected. A self-reported questionnaire was used between 27th June and 31st August 2017. From this, 439 questionnaires were collected and analyzed. Results: 1. The overall degree of adaptation to college life, according to varied general characteristics of the subject students, appeared to show that male students had a higher degree of adaptation than female students. It also appeared to be higher in students that had a higher level of academic accomplishment(<0.001). 2. The average score of the degree of adaptation to college life was 2.57 points(full score of 4.00 points). Social adaption had the highest score of 2.92 points, while academic adaptation had the lowest score of 2.37 points. Regarding the subordinate domains of adaptation to college life, the average score of attachment adaptation of students in the 3-year course of the Department of Dental Hygiene(2.69 points) appeared to be higher than that of students in the 4-year course(2.52 points). The difference between these scores was statistically significant(p=0.001). 3. The effects of varied academic systems upon the degree of adaptation to college life were also analyzed. Emotional and attachment adaptation to college, as well as the academic accomplishment of students in the 3-year course, was distributed over a range of 3.0~3.5. This was significantly different compared to students in the 4-year course(p<0.05). Conclusion: It is necessary to develop stepwise and continuous educational programs to enable better college life adaptation for students in the Department of Dental Hygiene.
This paper describes biomedical ethics problem perception in dental hygiene students. Questionnaire surveys were conducted for 285 in dental hygiene students from September 3th to 21th of 2007. For statistical analyses of collected data, the descriptive analyses and chi-square were adopted. This collected data showed that bribery as the most common ethical problem. Other frequently mentioned problems are unkindness of patient and treatment equality. They agreed to artificial abortion in 79.1%, human cloning was statistically significant by grade. Biomedical ethics problem except euthanasia and human cloning were statistically significant by resident area. Also, brain death was statistically significant by religion.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the clinical dentistry curriculum in Korea and Japan in order to review the application of integrated curriculum in the field. We collected the clinical dentistry syllabi for 2015-16 of the department of dental hygiene of Korea G University and Japan N University. Using the data from Korea, items that were duplicated and integrated were classified by the subjects covered in clinical dentistry. In addition, through case studies conducted in Korea and Japan, we analyzed and compared the credits, class hours, teaching methods, and evaluation methods, by subject. In Korea the total class hours in clinical dentistry, including clinical practice, was 1,095, and in Japan it was 1,104. In Korea, the syllabus covered by each department consisted of about 200 hours centering on theoretical lectures. In Japan, the integrated form of clinical dentistry was taught, and the instructions included all the contents of clinical dental study and also problem-based learning for approximately 100 hours. To strengthen the competence of dental hygienists as professionals, who are actively involved in dental practice, it is necessary to integrate the education contents of segmented clinical dentistry from the perspective of dental hygiene. It is also important to apply teaching methods that can help students improve their ability to solve problems.
Objectives: This study was designed to provide raise awareness of the guidelines associated with radiation, including those associated with ensuring safety at dental clinics. Methods: A survey was conducted on the degree of awareness on dental radiation among adults over age 20 in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province from December 2016. The questionnaire copies from 21 respondents whose answers were insincere were excluded from analysis. A total of 320 copies, equivalent to 93.4% of the total data collected, were used in the analysis. Results: Dental radiography was found to have been experienced by 60. 5% of the subjects, and 83.4% of them did not receive any explanation to the radiation exposure, while 78.7% had no experience wearing protective equipment. As a result of investigating factors affecting the recognition of dental radiation, it was found that female subjects had a higher awareness of the hazards associated with dental radiation hazard and the necessity to provide information. Conclusions: It is necessary to educate the dental medical personnel to raise awareness on radiation exposure and the need for protective equipment, especially when checking for pregnancy.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between the critical thinking disposition of dental hygienists and the variables associated with clinical decision making and job performance to analyze factors affecting job performance. Methods: A questionnaire survey was administered to 166 dental hygienists from June 24 to August 8, 2019. We analyzed results with t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and a multiple regression analysis using the SPSS Windows version 23.0(SPSS Inc. IL, USA). Results: Critical thinking disposition was the highest for open-mindedness and clinical decision making ranked highest for canvassing of objectives and values. Job performance ranked highest in terms of assist with dental treatment. Factors affecting dental hygienists' job performance were clinical decision making and critical thinking disposition(p<0.001, adj. R2 =31.4). Conclusions: It is expected that this study will provide basic data for the development of programs to enhance the job performance of dental hygienists. Furthermore, it is necessary to actively support plans such as conducting seminars at dental institutions and providing educational participation opportunities.
Objectives: This study aimed to establish the basic data for the performance of patient-centered care, perception of core competencies, and self-development of dental hygienists by verifying the effects of information literacy on the communication ability of dental hygienists, and the mediating effects of job crafting. Methods: Collected and analyzed data by conducting a survey targeting total 222 dental hygienists working for dental hospitals/clinics located in Seoul and Gyeonggi region. Verify the mediating effects of job crafting on the effects of information literacy on the communication ability, this study conducted the correlation analysis and simple regression analysis and multiple regression analysis. Results: In the effects of information literacy on the communication ability of dental hygienists, the cognitive crafting of job crafting (β=0.209, p<0.001) and relational crafting of job crafting (β=0.318, p<0.001) showed the partially mediating effects. Conclusions: In order to increase the educational accessibility for dental hygienists to perceive the importance of information literacy and communication ability, to improve the expertise as healthcare personnel who perform the patient-centered care by developing it, and also to develop the information literacy and job crafting, it would be necessary to develop various educational programs and contents.
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to find the influential factors of dental hygienists' work environment and level of perception of rights on their retention intention, and to provide basic data for protecting their rights and interests and improving their employment rate. Methods: From June 6 to July 24, 2021, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 214 dental hygienists via an online link. After questionnaire collection, IBM SPSS program (ver. 21.0; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) was used to conduct frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Results: The significant and positive influential factors of dental hygienists' retention intention were married individuals (p=0.022), fewer working hours (p<0.001, p=0.007), good work environment (p=0.002), higher wages (p<0.001, p<0.001), higher education (p=0.032), and perception of rights in a mid-level (p=0.038). Conclusions: It is necessary to consider wages and welfare equivalent to dental hygienists' work intensity and workload. By regularly educating dental hygienists to increase their perception of rights, expanding an opportunity of participation, and improving their work environment, it will be possible to increase their retention intention and efficiently establish manpower in dental clinics.
Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the degree of dental fear according to the experiences of the preventive dental care services. Methods: A self-administered survey was conducted in the subjects of male and female teenagers who lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do areas, and 231 copies of collected data for a month from July 26, 2017 were analyzed to find the following results. Results: In terms of the experiences of the preventive dental care services, they were classified in the order of preventive scaling (67.5%), education of toothbrushing (60.6%), fluoride application (49.8%) and sealant (44.2%). For the degree of dental fear according to their general characteristics, treatment avoidance factor ($2.56{\pm}1.19$) in the married was higher than that in the unmarried. All of treatment avoidance, physiological response and fearful stimulus induction factor, and the entire degree of fear were higher when there were experiences of the preventive dental care services than those without such experiences. The factors affecting the degree of dental fear included dental health conditions, experiences of toothbrushing education, sealant and fluoride application. In case those without the experiences considered their dental health condition was not healthy, the degree of dental fear was increased. Conclusions: This study verified that the degree of dental fear was increased in case no experiences of the preventive dental care services. Therefore, it is necessary to seek out the measures for promotion of the preventive dental care services, to reduce the degree of dental fear and enhance the dental health.
Objectives: Dental personnels have high chances of exposure to various infections during many dental procedures. This study was performed to investigate the state of infection control in the private dental clinics and prevention state of hepatitis B virus infection among the dental hygiene students in Kwanju city, Korea. Methods: Questionnaires were obtained from 94 dental hygiene students who participated in dental practice in private dental clinics for more than five weeks. Results: 83.9% of dentists and 17.2% of dental hygienists routinely used the mask for treating all patients, 32.3% of dentists and 6.5% of dental hygienists routinely used the rubber gloves. The use of protective eyeware was much lower in each group. Disinfectant was used in 52.7% for sanitization of dental instruments before cleansing. The prevalence of HBsAg and anti-HBs were 3.8% and 67.1% respectively, 52.7% of dental hygiene students had history of accidental needle stick. Conclusion: Routine use of personal barrier techniques by dental personnels should be emphasized. Dental hygiene students were not properly immunized against hepatitis B virus and had high incidence of accidental needle stick. It is necessary to establish specific regulations or recommendations for cross infection control in dental practice and to performed scheduled vaccination program for hepatitis B virus for dental hygiene students.
Objectives: This study analyzed the perception towards clinical practice education content held by dental hygiene students in dental institutions and their perceived importance of dental hygienists' clinical duties. Methods: The subjects of this study were 182 dental hygienists who were working at dental institutions in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Chungcheong areas. A survey was conducted with a self-administered questionnaire. In the questionnaire, the clinical practice contents were classified into observation, preparation, and performance, and the importance of clinical duty was measured with a 3-point scale. For the clinical practice contents and the importance of duty, descriptive statistics and chi-square test were performed, and the study results were analyzed using STATA 11.0. Results: With regard to clinical practice contents, observation was mainly performed in oral & maxillofacilal radiology, preventive dentistry, periodontal medicine and oral medicine. In primary care and infection control, practice and observation were mainly performed. In the department of orthodontics and pediatric dentistry, observation and preparation were mainly conducted, while in oral surgery, conservative dentistry observation, preparation and practice were all conducted. With regard to clinical practice contents according to the dental institution, there were statistically significant differences in the type of dental institution and the duty (p>0.05). In terms of the importance of dental hygienist's duty, infection control, toothbrushing education for each patient, removal of plaque, and patient education after surgery were considered important. Conclusions: For clinical practice of the dental hygiene department, the education contents should be standardized in accordance with the importance of the dental hygienist's duty, a protocol for operation of practice should be developed, and a method of standardization of evaluation should be sought in the future.
