Objectives : This research aims to analyze the relationship between the state of mental illness and oral health management of mental patients in mental health care institutions. Methods : The data were randomly selected from 474 patients in mental health care institutions. and analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Results : Schizophrenia accounted for 79.5%(337 patients) ; alcohol dependency, 5.3%(25 patients) ; mental retardation, 2.7%(13 patients) ; mental development disorder, 3.0%(14 patients) ; mental delusion and dementia, 7.6%(36 patients). Those who were in 40s had the highest dental caries of 3.95 and the highest remaining teeth of 26.76 were shown in the 20s. The correlation between remaining teeth and mental retardation was the highest, measuring 22.38(p<.05). Those who were in 70s had the serious periodontal condition that accounted for 41.3%(12 patients)(p<.05). The correlation coefficient for all factors-dental caries, remaining teeth, need for scaling, and periodontal condition-between mental illness condition and oral health were all positive(p <.05). The regression analysis resulted in the formula Y(mental health condition)=2.999+0.166(dental aries)-0.028(remaining teeth). Conclusions : Those who had mental illness had very poor and serious dental caries and periodontal diseases, so it is necessary to manage the dental health care for the mentally ill patients.
This study was conducted to identify actual dental care status, levels of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors about dental health, and dental health conditions in elementary students; and examine the relationships between the levels of knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and dental health conditions for 427 students in their sixth grades from six elementary schools in Pusan area from November 1st to December 5th, 2002. The data was collected through a structured study questionnaire and through dental checkups by dentists and was analyzed into frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation analysis using SPSS program. The main results of this study were summarized as follows: 1) The levels of knowledge, attitudes, behaviors about dental health was found to be high as mean score 18.75 points (64.7%) in knowledge, 17.86 points (59.5%) in attitudes, and 31.64 points (67.3%) in behaviors. Therefore they were found to care a lot about their dental health. The indices of dental health conditions were found to be low as mean score 0.87 pieces (3.1%) of treated teeth, 1.27 pieces (4.5%) of teeth to be treated, 7.64% of the DMFT rate and 0.43 points (7.2%) of the simplified oral hygiene index. Therefore their condition of dental health was found to be very clean. 2) The relationships among the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors about dental health showed a weak level of positive correlations. Among the conditions of dental health, treated teeth and the DMFT rate showed a moderate level of positive correlation; and treated teeth and the simplified oral hygiene index showed weak level of positive correlation. 3) The condition of dental health of the subjects of this study was found to be good and dental care was properly done when there was participation of parents and school health educators in dental care. It tells us that dental education is required not only for children but also for their parents. As there were significant correlations between knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors about children's dental heath, school health educators should encourage students to have continuous dental care habits for lifelong dental health with repetitive education, rather than to deliver simple knowledge to students during dental health education.

Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 143 prisoners in three jails from April 7 to June 2, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of 35 questions including 5 questions of general characteristics of the subjects, 4 questions of subjective oral health condition, 5 questions of management of oral health care, 11 questions of oral health recognition, and 10 questions of oral health practice. The questionnaire was adopted and modified by Shon et al. and Cho & Choi and measured by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.845 in recognition questions and Cronbach's alpha was 0.826 in the practice questions. The data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 for t-test, one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: 21.0% of prisoners answered that their perceived oral health condition was good. Those who received the dental treatment accounted for 42.0% and 12.6% of them took the oral health education. There was a significantly negative relationship between perceived oral health and oral health recognition(p<0.05). The oral health recognition showed positive influence on oral health practice(p<0.001). Conclusions: In general, prisoners did not receive the proper care of oral health in jails. Therefore, It is desirable that we need to set up a oral health care system for prisoners.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors affecting the unmet dental needs of Koreans. In relation to the subjects and methodology for this study, the data from the 5th national health nutrition survey which had been conducted between 2010 and 2012 were analyzed by using the PASW statistics 18.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA), a statistical program, through the frequency analysis of complex samples, cross analysis of complex samples, and logistics regression analysis of complex samples. The results of analysis showed that the rate of unmet dental needs stood at 35.3% of all subjects. Moreover, to determine the factors related to the unmet dental needs, the logistics regression analysis of complex samples was conducted. The results of analysis showed that the demographic and socio-economic factors and oral health condition factors had relationship with unmet dental needs. It is necessary to consider all the objective dental treatments that reflect specific dental diagnosis from a comprehensive standpoint.
