  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare oral symptoms in middle school and high school students of multicultural and ordinary families in Korea. Methods: We used data from the web-based survey of the National 2014 Korean Youth Risk Behavior of Korean Center for Disease Control. A total of 71,174 subjects responded about their father or mother's Korean nationality. We classified a subject as an adolescent of a multicultural family if aparticipant's father or mother's nationality was not Korean. Data was analyzed using SPSS Ver. 19.0. Results: High school students of multicultural families have experienced more oral disease symptoms, compared to high school students of ordinary families. After adjusting general characteristics and oral health behaviors, high school students of multicultural families experienced 1.78 times higher frequency of oral disease symptoms compared to high school students of ordinary families. Conclusions: The family type and age characteristics of adolescents should be considered when establishing policies and institutions targeting adolescents to improve oral health.

  • In this study, corrosion characteristics of TiN and ZrN film on the abutment screw by arc-ion plating were investigated using a potentiodynamic anodic polarization test in deaerated 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The surface morphologies of the coating layers before and after corrosion test were investigated by a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and a energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The surfaces of the TiN and ZrN coated abutment screws showed the smooth surfaces without mechanical defects like scratches which can be formed during the manufacturing process, compared with those of the non-coated abutment screw. The corrosion and passive current densities of TiN and ZrN coated abutment screws were lower than those of the non-coated abutment screw.

  • Achondroplasia is one of the most common types of dwarfism and is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Clinical features of achondroplasia include disproportionate short stature with normal trunk length, shortening of the extremities, bowing of the lower extremities, short stubby trident hands, spinal stenosis and lumbar lordosis. Characteristic craniofacial features include macrocephaly, prominent forehead, depressed nasal bridge, maxillary hypoplasia, otolaryngeal system dysfunction, and foramen magnum stenosis. These characteristics may lead to number of complications including hydrocephalus, apnea, upper-airway obstruction, otitis media, sinusitis and dental malocclusion. Apart from these features, the affected children have good general health and normal intelligence. Dentists should be aware of the clinical characteristics of achondroplasia and the complications that may arise as a result of this disorder. This case report is to present dental treatment of a patient with achondroplasia under general anesthesia and discuss special considerations.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the oral health behavior in the upper grades of elementary school in relation to oral health literacy and oral health knowledge. Methods: A survey on the general characteristics, oral health literacy, oral health knowledge, and oral health behavior was administered to students in the upper grades of five elementary schools in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, South Korea, from March to June, 2018. Finally, a total of 236 questionnaires were analyzed. Results: Oral health literacy in accordance with oral health behavior was high when oral health behavior was high (p<0.05). The results of multiple regression analysis of the general characteristics, oral health knowledge, oral health literacy, and oral health behavior were analyzed as follows: Y (oral health behavior) = 2.028 + 0.113 (oral health literacy) (p<0.05). Conclusions: To ensure appropriate oral health behavior among elementary school students, it is necessary to develop systematic programs in elementary schools to provide oral health education to increase oral health literacy and oral health knowledge.

  • Ni-Ti shape memory alloy for dental nerve treatment devices was prepared by adding Mo to Ni-Ti alloy to improve flexibility and fatigue fracture characteristics and simultaneously increase corrosion resistance. Surface properties of the alloy were evaluated. Microstructure analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy revealed that the amount of needle-like structure increased with increasing Mo content. The shape of the precipitate showed a pattern in which a long needle-like structure gradually disappeared and changed into a small spherical shape. As a result of XRD analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy, R-phase structure appeared as Mo was added. R-phase and B2 structure were mainly observed. As a result of DSC analysis, phase transformation of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy showed a two-step phase change of B2-R-B19' transformation with two exothermic peaks and one endothermic peak. As Mo content increased, R-phase formation temperature gradually decreased. As a result of measuring surface hardness of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy, change in hardness value due to the phase change tended to decrease with increasing Mo content. As a result of the corrosion test, the corrosion potential and pitting potential increased while the current density tended to decrease with increasing Mo content.

  • Background: By regulating the factors that contribute to oral diseases in a healthy way, oral health can be maintained and prevented. Methods: The general characteristics, PHP index, oral health behavior, and clinical periodontal index of each group were calculated by frequency analysis, and a cross-analysis (χ2 test) was conducted to assess the homogeneity of the general characteristics, oral health behavior, and clinical periodontal index of the study subjects. An Oral bacteriological examination was performed by gargling with saliva. Results: The expert periodontal prevention group showed a decrease in the copy number of periodontal disease causative bacteria, and A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, T. forsythus, andT. denticolashowed a significant difference before and after treatment (p=0.021). In the periodontal treatment group, A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, T. forsythus, andT. denticolaall showed a decrease in copy number, but there was no significant difference. Conclusions: This study showed professional periodontal prevention management had some effect on periodontal bacterial reduction.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to identify the level of digital oral health literacy among Korean adults in Gangwon-do. Methods: A survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with adults aged 30-89 residing in Gangwon-do, South Korea. The independent variables were socio-demographic characteristics, including gender, age, education level, income, and occupation. The dependent variable was digital oral health literacy. The statistical analysis included Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis, all performed using the SPSS 27.0 software program. Results: The elderly and those with poor socioeconomic status (p<0.001) had lower average scores due to poor digital oral health literacy. The ease of searching for oral health information and the utilization of digital devices to search for information on oral health displayed a significant relationship (r=0.730, p<0.001). To develop the use of digital devices, simplifying the search for oral information (p<0.001) is essential. Conclusions: All socio-demographic characteristics, except gender, displayed a correlation with the level of digital oral health literacy. Both environmental and individual aspects of the respondents' living conditions must be considered to improve digital oral health literacy.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the endodontic characteristics of mandibular premolars with dens evaginatus (DE) that require endodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent endodontic treatment were enrolled. The inclusion criteria were patients who underwent root canal treatment in the lower permanent teeth with DE and were followed up for at least 1 year. Preoperative clinical and radiographic variables were obtained. The frequency distribution of the preoperative variables was compared using the χ2 or Fisher's exact tests. The significance of the change in periapical health index (PAI) and root development stages before and after treatment was examined using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: A total of 150 teeth of 134 patients with an average age of 15.3 years were included. The percentage distribution comparison of the preoperative variables and obturation techniques revealed significant differences in pulpal and periapical diagnosis, and percussion, and especially regarding age, root development stage, and PAI. Age was the only statistically significant preoperative variable associated with root growth (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Approximately, 60% of DEs requiring endodontic treatment had immature roots. Age being the most significant predisposing factor, early treatment provides the greatest opportunity for full root development.
