  • Background: Job satisfaction of dental hygienists has been discussed continuously in dental hygiene research. It has been the most representative performance variable in dental and human resource management. However, in quantitative research, most of the studies have analyzed the causal relationship with variables related to dental hygienists' job satisfaction. The existing qualitative research contains only the studies that targeted dental hygienists with an experience of more than 10 years. The present study aimed to understand and to characterize the job satisfaction of dental hygienists with an experience of 2 to 10 years and to compare it with the qualitative research on dental hygienists with an experience of 10 or more years. Methods: An in-depth interview of dental hygienists with 2 to 10 years of experience working in 10 dental clinics was conducted. For data analysis, Giorgi's analysis method was used. Results: After analyzing the meaning of job satisfaction of dental hygienists, 180 semantic words and 19 subcategories were derived. The results of the interview were categorized into for central meanings: recognition and rewards, work experience and ability improvement, occupational characteristics, and work characteristics. Recognition and rewards included workplace recognition, patient recognition, self-effort and recognition, and the feeling of being rewarded. Work experience and ability improvement included various work experiences and factors relates to improving the work ability. Occupational characteristics included professional job, interest and persistence, job extensibility, and no burden of employment. Work characteristics included working conditions and separation of work and private life. Conclusion: The development of tools to measure the level of dental hygienists' job satisfaction after long-term service and to conduct follow-up research regarding ways and effects to improve job satisfaction is needed.

  • Anxiety and phobia in dental procedures are common deterrents for patients visiting the dental care unit. For these individuals, procedural sedation may aid in completion of dental treatments. In most cases, the patients are conscious during sedation, thereby allowing spontaneous ventilation. Intravenous sedation (IVS) is widely used during dental treatment to relieve patient anxiety. IVS is the most effective route of administration to achieve this goal, but it requires advanced training, more than that provided during undergraduate education. During IVS, rapid onset, repetitive drug administration, easy titration, and rapid recovery from sedation can be achieved. However, conscious sedation during IVS can result in deep sedation that can cause respiratory and cardiovascular depression. Therefore, the characteristics of intravenous sedatives should be known. The purpose of this review is to discuss the characteristics and usage of intravenous sedatives currently used for dental procedures.

Second, this study is to analyze demographic factors of dental hygienists which influence their job satisfaction. Method : This study was made through mail survey with questionnaires for dental hygienists who are personally performing dental hygienist duties at dental clinics in Seoul between June 19 and July 24, 2008 by looking into factors influencing dental hygienists' job satisfaction in order to provide them as background data to enhance their job satisfaction. Total 180 questionnaires were distributed, and among these, 156 questionnaires excluding 24 questions of incomplete responses were statistically analyzed with SPSS 12.0. Result : First, the total mean of dental hygienists' job satisfaction was found to be 2.99 points out of 5 points, and that of their autonomy to be the highest as 3.26, and that of their salary to be the lowest as 2.55. Second, for relation between general characteristics and job satisfaction of dental hygienists, significant difference was found just in job experience(p<0.05), current position(p<0.05), average salary(p<0.001), and the expected period of engagement in dental hygienist duties(p<0.01). Third, descriptive power on demographic characteristics, which were used as an independent variable influencing their job satisfaction, was found to be 17.7%, and among the said factors, average salary had a statistically significant effect on their job satisfaction(p<0.01). Conclusion : The point of salary factor was lowest among 5 factors composing dental hygienists' job satisfaction, and as a result of multiple regression analysis, a factor influencing job satisfaction was average salary. Therefore salary system is required to be improved in order to increase their job satisfaction, and further studies on factors influencing their job satisfaction are also required to be made.

  • Esthetic aspect is one of the most important factors in clinical dentistry. Esthetics of dental restorative materials consist of translucency, surface texture, and most importantly 'colour'. Main characteristics of optical properties and its clinical representation and general outlook as to the current information on colour and its representation has been considered in this study. Characteristics of esthetic materials are concerned with the field of science and dental professionals should take into consideration the importance, characteristics, and applications to actual clinical settings of esthetic restorative materials. Relevant information regarding natural teeth and esthetic restorative materials and training will lead to the heightened ability of dental professionals.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging and histopathological characteristics of osteoradionecrosis(ORN) and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw(MRONJ). Materials and Methods: Ten surgical specimens from segmental mandibulectomy (3 ORN and 7 MRONJ) were analyzed using CBCT. The CBCT parameters were as follows: high-resolution mode (tube voltage, 90.0 kV; tube current, 4.00 mA; rotation time, 16.8 s; field of view, 56 mm×56 mm; thickness, 0.099 mm). Histopathological characteristics were evaluated using histological slides of the surgical specimens. The Pearson chi-square test was used to compare ORN and MRONJ in terms of CBCT findings(internal texture, sequestrum, periosteal reaction and cortical perforation) and histopathological characteristics(necrotic bone, inflammatory cells, reactive bone formation, bacteria, Actinomyces, and osteoclasts). A P value less than 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: MRONJ showed periosteal reaction on CBCT more frequently than ORN (7 of 7 [100%] vs. 0 of 3 [0%], P<0.05). Regarding histopathological characteristics, MRONJ showed osteoclasts more frequently than ORN (6 of 7 [85.7%] vs. 0 of 3 [0%], P<0.05). Conclusion: This study evaluated the CBCT imaging and histopathological characteristics of ORN and MRONJ, and the findings suggest that CBCT could be useful for the evaluation of ORN and MRONJ.
