The purpose of this study was to examine the professional self-concept of dental hygiene students, their satisfaction level with clinical practice and the correlation of the two factors. The subjects in this study were 129 dental hygiene seniors at a college located in the city of J. The selected students had been engaged in a 16-week clinical practice. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. The dental hygiene students investigated got a mean of 3.34 out of possible five points on professional self-concept. As for the subfactors of professional self-concept, they got 3.75, 3.38 and 2.87 respectively on communication, professional work handling and satisfaction level. 2. They got a mean of 3.29 out of possible five points on satisfaction level with clinical practice. As to the subfactors of the satisfaction level, they gave 3.60, 3.50, 3.46, 3.04 and 2.83 to environments for practice, the content of practice, supervision, the length of practice and evaluation respectively. 3. In regard to the relationship of general characteristics to professional self-concept, satisfaction level with the major and social perception of dental hygienist made significant differences to professional self-concept. 4. As for connections between the general characteristics and satisfaction level with clinical practice, satisfaction with clinical practice was significantly different according to satisfaction with the major, satisfaction with the amount of practice and satisfaction with social perception of dental hygienist. 5. There was a significantly positive correlation between professional self-concept and satisfaction level with clinical practice(r=.383, p=.001). In conclusion, how much dental hygienists who are trained to be a dental hygienist are gratified with clinical practice is one of integral factors to affect their development of professional self-concept. Therefore prolonged research efforts should be directed into determining in which way clinical practice should be implemented to develop the professional self-concept of would-be dental hygienists and how to raise their satisfaction with clinical practice.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the satisfaction level of dental hygiene students with their major and clinical practice in an effort to have a good understanding of dental hygiene students. The subjects in this study were 226 juniors who were selected from among dental hygiene students at four different colleges located in Busan and South Gyeongnam Province. This study lays its purpose on providing basic material for managing dental hygiene care programs by grasping images of the elderly perceived by dental hygienists and their behaviors toward the elderly, who have an important role in improving the elderly's dental health in the aging society. For these purposes, the researcher conducted a self-administrative questionnaire survey of 370 dental hygienists working in dental clinics or offices located in the Seoul and Daejeon areas from June 2 to 21 in 2008 and collected data, statistical analysis of the $x^2$-test, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson Correlation used. resulting in the following findings. 1. In perceived images of the elderly according to their general characteristics, a subject group with under 8-year career showed 85.38 points, indicating the statistically significant difference (p=0.001). 2. When we look at perceived images of the elderly and behaviors toward them according their characteristics, in images of the elderly, a subject group with positive perceptions of the elderly showed 85.51 points (p=0.000), a subject group with meaningful old person(s), 84.66 points (p=0.000), a subject group living with old person(s), 86.04 points (p=0.001), and a subject group with experience in volunteer service activities, 84.11 points (p=0.001), and in behaviors toward the elderly, a subject group with positive perceptions of the elderly and with meaningful old person(s) showed 56.46 (p=0.036) and 55.91 points respectively, indicating the statistically significant difference (p=0.040). 3. Images of the elderly and behaviors toward them showed a positive correlation, indicating that the more positive images of the elderly, the more positive behaviors toward them (r=0.317). Putting these results together, it is thought that it is time to need continuous education and efforts regarding the formation of desirable relationships with and images of the elderly and behaviors toward them, for dental hygienists who have an important role in managing and enhancing the elderly's dental health in the aging society.
Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between obesity and dental caries of Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES VI) (2013 to 2015) were used and targeted adolescents aged 13 to 18 years. For statistical analysis, the SPSS 18.0 program was used, and the significance level was set at 0.05. Results: For the general and health-related characteristics, female students (p=0.001) showed higher decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index than male students. Furthermore, DMFT showed higher tendency, as age was higher (p<0.001). Smoking (p=0.011) and drinking experience (p=0.027) revealed higher DMFT. The dental caries experience was significantly different among students who were female (p=0.033), older (p=0.001), and overweight or underweight (p=0.022). In the BMI for the general and health-related characteristics, male students had higher obesity rate than female students (p=0.003), and obese subjects had higher dental checkup in the last year (p=0.013). In multiple linear regression analysis of obesity and DMFT, the unadjusted model showed that the obesity group's DMFT was about 0.8 higher than that of the normal group (p=0.024). However, statistical significance was not shown in the adjusted models. In the logistic regression analysis of obesity and dental caries experience, the unadjusted model 1 (1.93 times), the adjusted model 2 (1.79 times), and model 3 (1.76 times) showed significantly higher dental caries experience. Conclusions: Both obesity and dental caries are related to diet habits and lifestyles and have a negative impact on adult health. Therefore, it is necessary to create a healthy social environment around the adolescent, and proper intervention through education is required to form healthy habits.

Research topics included dental manpower at 20.0%, infection control at 7.7%, dental information at 6.2%, patient safety at 6.2%, and oral health care quality at 6.2%. 72.3% of the papers were quantitative studies, and the majority of research subjects were dental hygienists or dental hygiene students, accounting for 26.2% of the total. The Journal of Korean Academy of Dental Administration covers topics such as dental healthcare marketing, dental healthcare organization and management, dental healthcare information, dental healthcare policy, dental healthcare insurance, dental healthcare quality management, patient safety, medical disputes, and infection control. The authors are also contributed by a variety of dental personnel, including dentists, dental hygienists, and dental technicians.
Objective: The purpose of the study is to investigate clinical skill proficiency in core dental hygiene competency in dental hygienists. Methods: The study subjects were 208 dental hygienists in Seoul and Gyeonggido. A complete self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 171 dental hygienists. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, assessment of core dental hygiene competency, implementation of core dental hygiene competency, and education of core dental hygiene competency. Data were analyzed by PASW Statistics 18.0 to carry out a frequency analysis, one-way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation. Results: Chief complaint confirmation($4.08{\pm}0.91$), scaling (ultrasonic scaler)($4.36{\pm}0.88$), and toothbrushing education($4.35{\pm}0.86$) were found to be the most important in the areas of dental hygiene assessment, implementation, and education, respectively. In dental hygiene education, statistically significant differences were identified by 'level of education,' 'working career,' 'type of workplace,' 'department,' and 'main task.' Conclusions: Respondents were found to think that their level of proficiency should be above average for most jobs. Proficiency in core competency was shown to be different according to 'general characteristics of dental hygienists,' 'type of workplace,' and 'department.'
Objectives : In most developed countries there has been a substantial decrease in the prevalence of dental caries in children of 12 years old over the past 40 years. This change in epidemiology highlights the importance of preventive management in dentistry. For successful management of early caries lesions, it is essential to detect and assess the pathological changes of dental caries. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the overview of International Caries Detection and Assessment System(ICDAS) criteria for the detection and assessment of early caries lesions by literature reviews. Methods : The author reviewed the MEDLINE search by the key words of 'caries assessment', 'caries detection', 'caries measurement', and 'ICDAS'. Results : This literature review provided an overview of International Caries Detection and Assessment System(ICDAS) criteria for the detection and assessment of early caries lesions. This article showed the principles, concept, and primary caries detection criteria of the ICDAS. The ICDAS can macroscopically measure the enamel surface changes and potential histological depth of caries lesions by the surface characteristics of the teeth. The ICDAS criteria allow researchers and clinicians to choose the stage of dental caries and characteristics for assessment. Conclusions : ICDAS can be an adjunct method to clinical decision making and preventive treatment planning.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the image toward the elderly among dental hygiene students. Methods : The subjects were 348 college students. A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the students from May 15 to June 15, 2013. The questionnaire included general characteristics of the elderly people and image toward the elderly. Results : As for the elderly people-related general characteristics of the students, 79.9 percent of the students had never received education on the elderly. Approximately more than half of the students replied that they lived with elderly people and gave positive answers to living with elderly people out of filial duty and respect for the elderly. They got a mean of $79.78{\pm}10.60$ out of 140 in image toward the elderly. Those who believe in religion and have more siblings tended to have a positive image toward the elderly people. Conclusions : In order to have a positive image toward the elderly people, volunteer activity for the elderly people in senior welfare centers can make the students more positive to the elderly people.
The purpose of this study is to examine the importance of healthy attachment formation by examining the effects of dental hygiene students' adult attachment patterns on depression, self-esteem, empathy, and career choice, and to present basic data for career guidance that considers individual characteristics. Students enrolled in the dental hygiene department at a university in Daejeon were the subjects of this study, and data were collected from September 14 to October 14, 2020 through self-reported questionnaires. Frequency analysis, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed. As a result of classifying adult attachment styles into three types, out of a total of 158 people, 62 (39.2%) had the avoidant attachment style, 56 (35.4%) had the secure attachment style, and 40 (25.3%) had the anxious-ambivalent attachment style appear. Self-esteem according to attachment type (F=26.224, p<0.0001), empathy (F=3.944, p<0.05), depression (F=12.702, p<0.0001), career indecisiveness (F=4.367, p<0.05). Based on the results of identifying the sub-factors that affect the dental hygiene and adult attachment styles of students with depression, self-esteem, empathy and career choice, this study intends to use them as reference materials for career decision taking into account individual characteristics.
