Recently, there have been improvements in diagnostic methods for the assessment of early caries lesions. The reason is that dental professionals are seeking methods to reliably detect incipient dental caries and to remineralize them. This review examines the literature on principles, theoretical background, and history of the Quantitative Light-Induced Fluorescence (QLF) system (Inspektor Research Systems BV, The Netherlands). Furthermore, this paper discusses the potential application of QLF system to clinical practice for educational purpose, enabling dental hygiene students to perform oral health assessment using the QLF system. In addition, the clinical application of QLF system can motivate patients by providing additional visual information about caries and bacterial activity. The evidences on validity and reliability of the QLF system for detection of longitudinal changes in de/remineralization and caries were examined. The QLF system is capable of monitoring and quantifying mineral changes in early caries lesions. Therefore, it can be used to assess the impacts of caries preventive measures on the remineralization and reversal of the caries process. And the QLF system is a very promising equipment to assess educational effectiveness for dental hygiene students in their learning process. In conclusion, the QLF system is the most effective technology for more sensitive staging of caries and treatment without surgical intervention.
We attempted to develop a problem-based learning (PBL) module for integrated education in dental hygiene with the aim of helping students gain clinical competencies necessary for dental hygienist work. To develop the PBL Module for Clinical Dentistry in Dental Hygiene course, the researchers identified literature related to not only educational technology, but also medical science, nursing, dentistry, and dental hygiene. During the design phase of the PBL module, problem scenarios and a plan for the teaching and learning process were developed. Developing problem scenarios involved describing a problematic situation and three questions related with that situation. To cultivate competencies required in dental clinics, each question was related to the diagnosis of a dental disease, dental treatment, and dental hygiene procedures for care. Teaching-learning process plan included the designs of operating environment, operational strategies, learning resources, facilitation of problem-solving process, and evaluation. It is necessary to evaluate the PBL module for integrated education in dental hygiene to confirm its effectiveness.
Objectives: We analyzed the correlation between physique and size of the dental arch of college students with normal occlusion. Methods: Ninety-nine college students filled out the prepared questionnaire. The length and width of the dental arch of the students was measured using a plaster model after taking an impression. The data were analyzed using the t-test and correlational analysis. Results: The maxilla arch length was 3.70 mm longer and the inter-molar width of the maxilla was 3.06 mm longer in men (both p<0.01) than in women. Additionally, the mandible was 3.66 mm longer in men as compared to those in the women (p<0.01). As height increased, there was increase in the body weight (α=0.683, p<0.01), maxilla arch length (α=0.373, p<0.01), molar width of the maxilla (α=0.214, p<0.05), and the mandible (α=0.280, p<0.01). The greater the weight increase, the greater the maxillary arch length increase (α=0.392, p<0.01), and the greater the molar width of the maxilla (α=0.336, p<0.01) and mandible (α=0.502, p<0.01) increase. Conclusions: As physical size (both height and weight) increased, the maxillary length and molar width also increased. Based on the results of this study, the cause of malocclusion, form and size of the dental arch, and stable occlusion can be used as basic data.
Objectives: This study provides basic data for developing practical teaching methods enabling efficient execution of the dental hygiene care process. Methods: A total of 197 dental hygiene students experienced in dental hygiene care process in Gwangju and Jeonnam were surveyed from June 1 to August 30, 2019 to study their class flow, professors-student relationships, and class satisfaction level. Post survey, statistical analysis was performed using frequency analysis, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Results: 1. Class fl ow was high in three lecturers (3.56), four hours per week (3.39), and four hours per week (3.94). Class satisfaction was high in three lecturers (3.99) and four hours per week (3.90) (p<0.05). 2. There was a positive correlation between class flow and professor-student relationship (r=0.519), class fl ow and class satisfaction (r=0.566), and professor-student relationship and class satisfaction (r=0.838) (p<0.01). 3. The factors influencing class fl ow were the number of lecturers (β=0.442), class hours per week (β=-0.397), and class satisfaction (β=0.385). Conclusions: Apart from finding ways to improve class satisfaction for class flow in the dental hygiene care process, efforts are required to increase the number of lecturers and class hours per week for efficient class management. Further research is needed to develop practical teaching methods.
Objectives: This study consisted of a literature review on oral health among people with disabilities, and to present the factors that should be considered in developing an oral health program for people with disabilities. Methods: The key words 'people with disabilities' and 'oral health' were searched in 4 Korean academic journals and 5 online search engines and a total of 635 papers were identified. Duplicate papers were removed, and the literature selection criteria were applied to the remaining papers. Finally, a total of 45 papers were used in the review. Results: First, people with disabilities were the most common research subjects, followed by dental students, dental hygiene students, dentists, dental hygienist and guardians and special education teachers. Second, the most frequently studied research topic was dental examination, followed by oral health behavior and behavior of using dental clinics. Third, research purposes included the status of oral health, the quality of oral health, dental treatment, the use of oral health service, and oral hygiene behavior and perception. Fourth, the most frequently discussed policy task was expansion of research subjects, followed by oral hygiene and policy development. Conclusions: To enhance the oral health of people with disabilities who have difficulty in keeping their teeth clean and healthy on their own, development of an oral hygiene training program is required not only for people with disabilities, but also for guardians and teachers. It is equally important to examine oral health behavior that could potentially affect the status of oral health and create a more accurate and systematic oral hygiene method. In addition, the government, together with various other research institutes, should conduct an oral health survey of a representative sample of people with disabilities to determine oral health status and facilitate improvements to oral hygiene programs.
This study systematically collected and analyzed the results of previous studies on the stress of clinical dental prctice for dental hygiene students. The data were collected according to the systematic review guidelines of PRISMA(Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis) and 25 ariticles were used in the final analysis. In order to measure clinical dental practice, 4 measuring tools were used. As a result of literature analysis, the lower the satisfaction, the higer the stress of clinical dental practice. Personal relationship, role and activity, ideal and value were very important factors. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between clinical dental practice and various variables and to investigate the improvement of clinical dental practice based on the results of this study.
Objectives: This study analyzed the perception towards clinical practice education content held by dental hygiene students in dental institutions and their perceived importance of dental hygienists' clinical duties. Methods: The subjects of this study were 182 dental hygienists who were working at dental institutions in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Chungcheong areas. A survey was conducted with a self-administered questionnaire. In the questionnaire, the clinical practice contents were classified into observation, preparation, and performance, and the importance of clinical duty was measured with a 3-point scale. For the clinical practice contents and the importance of duty, descriptive statistics and chi-square test were performed, and the study results were analyzed using STATA 11.0. Results: With regard to clinical practice contents, observation was mainly performed in oral & maxillofacilal radiology, preventive dentistry, periodontal medicine and oral medicine. In primary care and infection control, practice and observation were mainly performed. In the department of orthodontics and pediatric dentistry, observation and preparation were mainly conducted, while in oral surgery, conservative dentistry observation, preparation and practice were all conducted. With regard to clinical practice contents according to the dental institution, there were statistically significant differences in the type of dental institution and the duty (p>0.05). In terms of the importance of dental hygienist's duty, infection control, toothbrushing education for each patient, removal of plaque, and patient education after surgery were considered important. Conclusions: For clinical practice of the dental hygiene department, the education contents should be standardized in accordance with the importance of the dental hygienist's duty, a protocol for operation of practice should be developed, and a method of standardization of evaluation should be sought in the future.
Objectives : This study aims to analyze the tasks, recognition and obstacles in operation of school dental clinics and to examine opinions on installation, operation and prerequisites for toothbrushing facilities. Methods : It conducted a survey t o the persons in charge at 378 school dental clinics in Korea and total 127 sheets, excluding incompletely answered data, were used for analysis by using SPSS 18.0. Results : Two regular dental hygienists visit school dental clinics 2-3 times per week and work 4-6 hours per week on average. Their tasks include oral health education, toothbrushing instruction, oral examination, sending school newsletters, and dental sealants. The obstacles of operation include excessive workload other than the work for the school dental clinic, lack of dentists, and lack of cooperation of principals and teachers in school. The persons in charge think that the chief task of the school dental clinic is the continuous oral health management, and it effectively affects students' oral health improvement. Most of them were for the installation of toothbrushing facilities. They said that it will be effective in students having an adequate toothbrushing habit and their toothbrushing rate increasing higher. They thought that if the school dental clinic is changed to toothbrushing facilities, it will improve students' oral health management. The prerequisites for toothbrushing facilities are the support of manpower in charge, principal's support, and development of operational programs. Conclusions : The most effective function of school dental clinics is constant oral health management. However, when public health doctors are reduced and dental sealants get included in health insurance, the budget of local government will decrease and then it will eventually reduce the work of school dental clinics. Therefore, it is needed to enhance support for school dental clinics or install a toothbrushing facilities rather than a school dental clinic.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data for searching for the method to induce more positive knowledges and attitudes about the old from the university students majoring in dental hygienics, health and social welfare university students majoring in the old, who will face the change of aging society directly. Methods : The study selected 1 school in Busan and Daegu respectively with convenience sampling from September 2010 to October 2010, performed questionnaire(self administered questionnaire) to 401 students majoring in dental hygienics, health and social welfare and achieved following conclusions. Results : 1. When the students without the education experience about the old have negative experiences, the degree of interest in the old was high and when they have positive experiences, the attitude score about the old was high(p<0.001). 2. For education experience about the old, the students majoring in dental hygienics have the lowest experiences(p<0.001). 3. For knowledge, attitude and behavior about the old depending on major, the students majoring in social welfare have the highest interest and for the knowledge about the old in physical area, the students majoring in health have the highest knowledge(p<0.01).4. The area related with the knowledge about the old showed significant correlation in all of physical, psychological and social area(p<0.001). 5. The factors giving effects to the attitude about the old were gender(p=.006), experience(p=.003) and education experience related with the old(p=.022) and the factors giving effects to the behavior about the old were experience(p=.036) and attitude about the old(p=.000). Conclusions : It is necessary to develop actual education program that can provide preliminary dental hygienists with positive attitude about the old and reflect a lot of matters related with psychological area and social area about the old. In addition, it is necessary to establish the opportunity to understand the old through voluntary service activity related with the old in connection with local community. It is necessary to recognize the old positively by showing the positive figure.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the experience of incivility in clinical practice and stress coping strategies among students enrolled in the Department of Dental Hygiene with clinical practice experience. The study randomly sampled subjects from a group of 150 dental hygiene students attending the Chungcheong area. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation analysis were conducted. The trainees experienced a level of incivility of 1.69, and their level of coping with the resulting stress was 2.58. The study found significant results in terms of gender, clinical practice, and major satisfaction when examining the incivility experienced by trainees based on general characteristics. Among these general characteristics, there were statistically significant differences in the avoidance focus among the sub-domains depending on the grade, number of practicums, and satisfaction with clinical practice. Additionally, the problem-solving focus showed significant results depending on satisfaction with the major. The incivility experienced by trainees showed a positive correlation with avoidance-oriented coping among stress coping strategies (r=.268), social support-seeking coping (r=-.045), and problem-solving-oriented coping (r=-.034) was found to have a negative correlation.
