The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between wrong postures and pain during scaling and encourage dental hygienists and students to exercise scaling in a good position. After obtaining informed consent, 107 students (3rd and 4th grade students) who had an experience with scaling practice were enrolled. The questionnaire included three general items, four items related to the posture during scaling, and nine items related to pain management (total 16 items), for which the five-point Likert scale was used. Through the questionnaire, we examined the preference of posture during scaling, posture education during scaling, pain in each part during scaling, pain management, and pain management method. In the scaling exercise, 86.3% of the subjects were instructed on the correct posture, and 87.9% of the subjects perceived the possibility of inducing musculoskeletal disorders based on the scaling posture. The percentage of subjects who responded that they performed scaling in the correct posture was 33.6% and that of subjects who answered that they bowed or turned their head by more than 15° was 64.4%. Further, 45.7% of the subjects answered that they bent their shoulders, and 29.9% of the subjects answered that their postures were not parallel to the floor. Pain during scaling was still higher when they bent their head, they bent their waist, and they bent their wrist (p<0.05). During scaling, pain was most frequent in the fingers and hands (15%), followed by the neck (14%), shoulders (11.2%), waist (9.3%), and feet and legs (2.8%). The percentage of subjects who performed regular exercise (or stretching) to prevent pain was 29.9% and that of subjects who managed pain after scaling was 12.1%. Further, exercise (24.6%) and self-massage (20.3%) were highly used as the pain management methods, and the school practice was preferred to education media for pain management (79.4%). In the scaling practice, there was a training on pain management, but the frequency of practicing in the wrong posture was high. Moreover, pain increased upon practicing in an incorrect posture. Therefore, more in-depth and systematic education on the necessity and method of musculoskeletal disease management during scaling is required.
Objectives : The purpose of the is to investigate the teaching effectiveness of clinical practice instructors and the satisfaction level of dental hygiene majoring students in clinical practice training. Methods : Subjects were second and third grade 480 dental hygiene majoring students in Seoul and Gangwondo. Except 48 incomplete answers, 438 data were analyzed. Questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, teaching of clinical practice instructors, educational content, organization al skills, leadership, learning environment, evaluation skills and clinical practice satisfaction level. Results : 1. A strong positive correlation (r = 0.832) was found between teaching effectiveness and clinical practice satisfaction. A positive correlation more than 0.50 was found between the clinical practice satisfaction, encouragement and support for teaching effectiveness, educational contents, and leadership. 2. There were significant correlations between the encouragement and support (B = 0.209), educational content (B = 0.199), leadership ability (B = 0.257) and ability to create an environment (B = 0.084), evaluation ability (B = 0.083). Conclusions : Teaching effectiveness of the clinical practice instructors had influences on the clinical practice satisfaction. It is necessary to connect clinical practice instructions with satisfaction towards clinical practice to the students.
Background: The selection of an occupation is typically based on individuals' personalities and the characteristics of occupations, which significantly affect occupational consciousness. The present study aimed to enhance the occupational achievement level of and provide fundamental data for student counseling in order to develop competitive professional workers by understanding the occupational consciousness of freshmen and motivating them as dental hygienists with career development plans, as freshmen majoring in dental hygiene eventually play a significant role in the field of dentistry as dental hygienists. Methods: The surveys were distributed to 160 freshmen in the dental hygiene department and were subsequently collected. The data from 142 surveys were used for analysis, as 18 surveys were excluded due to insincere responses. The survey contents included questions related to major selection and satisfaction, including motives for selecting a dental hygiene major, prior knowledge on a dental hygiene major and a career as a dental hygienist, satisfaction level of the major, and reasons for dissatisfaction in cases if applicable, as well as questions related to occupational consciousness, including career prospects for dental hygienists, opinions on the occupation, and conditions of job selection. Results: High employment rate with good salary level ranked highest (43.7%) among motives to apply the dental hygiene major, followed by the desire to be a professional worker (21.1%) and recommendation by acquaintances. Of those who responded, 50.7% indicated a normal level of satisfaction with the major, and 69.9% responded that they had prior knowledge regarding the dental hygiene major and/or field of dental hygiene. These results may be due to youth unemployment and the occurrence of job preparation immediately after students enter university, which is a result of the difficulty in job seeking. In terms of career prospects, 48.6% of students responded with "growing a little bit," followed by "growing a lot" (28.9%), "no difference from now" (21.1%), and "other" (1.4%). Regarding opinions on the occupation, 65.5% responded that occupation was an tool with which to make and income or a living, 23.2% responded that occupation was for dreams and self-realization, and 11.3% responded that occupation was for success in life and maintaining social status. Regarding the conditions of job selection, the responses included that the workplace had good working conditions (39.4%), good interpersonal relationships (21.8%), and a higher salary (18.3%). This may reflect the change in work ethics among university students, according to the trend of the times. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, we found that educational guidance to enhance the level of satisfaction with the major, and career guidance to understand and apply the clear vision and long-term job security are necessary.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to find out the effect of part-time employment experience on adaptation to university life in dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 288 dental hygiene students in Seoul and Gyeonggido from September to October, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(5 items), part-time employment experience(6 items), and adaptation to university life(53 items). The instrument for adaptation to university life was adapted from Baker and Sirky and modified by Kwon. Likert 5 point scale adaptation included personal emotion adaptation, academic adaptation, social adaptation, and university environment adaptation. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ was 0.80 in the study. Results: The adaptation to university life was 3.0 points. The higher the economic level was, the higher the personal emotional adaptation(p<0.001) and academic adaptation were(p<0.05). The adaptation to university life was positively influenced by tuition support by parents and part-time employment(p<0.05). The part-time employment was significantly helpful to future job selection, social adaptation, and university environment adaptation(p<0.001). Economic stability and advantage of future job selection had a positive influence on the adaptation to university life. So the adaptation to university life was proportional to younger age, economic stability, and advantage to future job selection. Conclusions: It is very important to give a positive motivation and stimulation, and a careful counseling to the students in part-time employment. In order to encourage the part-time employed students, major-related part-time job opening must be given.
Purpose: The purposes of this study are to investigate the actual uses of a smartphone and tendencies for smartphone addiction among dental hygiene students, examine the effects of life stress, self-esteem, communication ability and interpersonal relationship ability considered to have correlations with addiction, and is provided basic data to solve the problems. Methods: The investigator analyzed data collected from 332 students in the Dental Hygiene Department at J University in Gyeongnam Province with SPSS 18.0. Results: The students scored mean 2.34±0.40 points on the four-point scale of smartphone addiction tendencies, 1.70±0.43 on the life stress scale, 2.99±0.32 on the interpersonal relationship ability scale, 2.80±0.42 on the self-esteem scale, and 2.83±0.39 on the Communication ability scale. There were differences in their smartphone addiction tendencies according to such general characteristics as the grade(p<.05), perceptions of a smartphone(p<.001), and hours of using a smartphone(p<.001). They had differences in life stress according to the grade(p<.01). Their smartphone addiction tendencies increased according to higher percentage of a smartphone(β=.360, p<.001), longer hours of using a smartphone(β=.225, p<.001), and greater life stress(β=.297, p<.001). The higher their smartphone addiction tendencies were, the lower their self-esteem was(β=.-210, p<.001). Conclusions: The study provides data needed for dental hygiene students to recognize the problems of smartphone addiction, find improvement measures, and make effective use of a smartphone.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects that the self-efficacy, self-elasticity, and major satisfaction of students majoring in dental hygiene would have on the adaptation to the campus life. Methods: The total 396 students were surveyed who majored in dental hygiene in universities located at Gyeongbuk and Gyeongnam from October 15, 2013 to October 30. The collected data were analyzed by using the SPSS 17.0 program, along with the One-Way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multi-regression analysis. Results: The 'aptitude and interest' were found to be greatest factor among the motive for application among the factors of self-efficacy, self-elasticity, and major satisfaction of students, depending on general characteristics. The results of correlation analysis showed that the self-elasticity had a correlation of 0.741 and the adaptation to the study had a correlation of 0.420 in the self-efficacy, while the individual emotional adaptation, adaptation to university environment, and adaptation to the study had a correlation as high as over 0.4 in the self-elasticity(p<0.05). In addition, it was found that the adaptation to the campus life increased proportionally to the self-elasticity and major satisfaction(p<0.05). Conclusions: To increase the campus life adaptation of students majoring in dental hygiene, it is considered necessary to explore the measures that can improve the self-elasticity and overall major satisfaction.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the satisfaction of tutoring and some dental hygiene students and to investigate whether the self - efficacy and subjective norm are mediating effects. Methods: This study was conducted on 81 students in the first year, 82 students in the second year, 30 students in third year of girls who are majoring in the dental hygiene of a college in north Gyeonsang province Form September 1 to October 15 2017 asked them to answer the questionnaire and retrieved the questionnaire, among the 193 questionnaires except for the inaccurate response, 186 were final analysis. Results: In the relationship between the affective factors of tutoring learning and the satisfaction of tutoring learning, the relationship of social interdependence, group intimacy, program usefulness, group commitment, academic self - efficacy, subjective norm, It was found to be relevant. The usefulness of the program was found to have a significant effect on the satisfaction of tutoring learning. Conclusions: It is expected that the tutoring learning satisfaction is mediated by the academic self - efficacy and the subjective norm, so that it can be utilized as the basic data of the study application of the new education program in the field of dental hygiene.
This study was conducted to identify the correlation between dental hygiene students' overdependence on smartphones, sleep deprivation, and self-control, and factors influencing self-control. 267 college students in the department of dental hygiene located in the Chungcheong area were surveyed and analyzed. Smartphone overdependence was positively correlated with sleep deprivation and smartphone overdependence was negative correlated with self-control. The sleep deprivation was negative correlated with self-control. Factors affected to self-control were problematic results and sleep deprivation. Therefore, it is necessary to develop education and programs that can increase the self-control of dental hygiene students and to prepare measures to prevent sleep problems and overdependence on smartphone.
One of the best way to prevent dental caries and periodontal disease is removing dental plaque. Toothbrushing is also one of the crucial ways to gel rid of dental plaque and improve dental hygiene. The purpose of th is study was to examine how many bacteria were attached to toothbrushes used by dental palque acidogenecity and related behaviors to toothbrush use. Subjects in this study were 30 college students in their twenties, on whom a survey was conducted to find out how they cleansed their toothbrushes, how long they cleaned toothbrushes after brushing, and how to keep them. And then dental palque acidogenecity by caries activity test was implemented and the number of bacteria attached to their toothbrushes was tested. The findings of the study were as follows : 1. Concerning correlations between dental palque acidogenecity and the number of remaining bacteria in the toothbrushes used by students, the number of bacteria was lower in the group of students with no caries activity than in the group with mild caries activity. 2. As for relations between the way of cleansing toothbrushes and the number of bacteria, there was no statistically significant gap between the group of students who wetted their toothbrushes with water and rubbed the heads of them and the group of students who just only wetted their toothbrushes with no further actions. 3. Regarding the relationship of toothbrush cleansing time to the number of bacteria, the number of bacteria was lower in the group of students who cleansed their toothbrushes for 15 seconds or more. 4. As to the influence of the number of toothbrush used by students, there was no significant difference between the group using just one toothbrush and the other group using two or more toothbrushes. 5. As for correlations between the way of keeping toothbrushes and the number of bacteria, no significant gap existed between the group thai kept their toothbrushes separately and the other that didn't.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the awareness and needs of English learning in allied health science college students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 600 health science college students in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon province. The questionnaire consisted of purpose of English learning, attitude and motivation. Data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0 program. Results: Most of the students took English classes(96%) and the English class was mainly done by instruction-centered learning (43.6%). Many students felt the needs of English and they thought English was the most important tool for getting a job(70.7%). Nonetheless most of the students lacked in confidence and interest in English learning due to the surrounding pressure(51.2%). Too much surrounding pressure can cause students lose their zest in English learning. Conclusions: It is need to seek for a curriculum consisting of practical purposes to meet the needs of health science college students about English learning.
