A self-administered survey was conducted for 11 days from September 9 to 19, 2009, and the answer sheets from 473 respondents were analyzed. To look for connections between their major and the characteristics of their oral health promotion behavior, t-test was utilized, and t-test and one-way ANOVA were carried out to find out the relationship oral health promotion behavior by general characteristics. Besides, multiple regression analysis was employed to grasp factors affecting oral health promotion behavior. Results : Among the subfactors of oral health promotion behavior, the dental hygiene students statistically significantly outdid the nonhealth-related majors in thorough post-meal toothbrushing(p<0.01), toothbrushing method(p<0.001), use of fluorine-containing dentifrice(p<0.001) and good nutrition(p<0.05). But the latter statistically significantly outperformed the former in use of fluorine-containing rinse(p<0.001) and limited sugar intake(0<0.05). Regarding variables affecting oral health promotion behavior, the age group, whether to get a dental checkup over the last year and whether to use oral hygiene supplies were identified as the variables to impact on oral health promotion behavior. Specifically, the age group(dental hygiene students) and the get a dental checkup over the last year(nonhealth-related majors) had a greater impact. Conclusions : To promote the oral health of college students, comprehensive oral health education should be provided, which covers the importance of dental checkup, recommendation for the use of oral hygiene supplies, etc. Specifically, oral health education should be offered as one of general education courses in order for nonhealth-related majors to get into sound life habits and improve their oral health promotion behavior. The questionnaire was modified and complemented from Ethics Position Questionnaire (EPQ). The questionnaire included EPQ, self-esteem, and perception of patient medical information protection. Data were analyzed by independent t-test, one way ANOVA, Duncan's multiple comparison analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0 program. Results: There was a positive correlation among all the variable including idealism position, self-esteem, and perception of patient medical information protection, The factors influencing on the perception of patient medical information protection were idealism position (${\beta}=0.271$, p<0.001) and self-esteem (${\beta}=0.248$, p<0.001). The corrected explanation power of the model was 15.1%. Conclusions: As the idealism position and self-esteem become higher, the perception of patient medical information protection gets higher. Therefore, this study suggests that it is needed to develop and vitalize implement the appropriate programs enhancing ethics consciousness, proper position, and self-esteem in the dental hygiene students receiving the education for their professionalism in the dental hygiene curricula.

Background: Recently, competency-based education has been reorganized in the dental hygiene curriculum. In education, non-cognitive factors are emphasized. Grit, the non-cognitive ability to persevere to achieve an individual's long-term goals, is emerging. This study aims to identify the degree of grit and core competencies in students and to investigate the relationship between them and the factors that affect these core competencies. Methods: This study was conducted using 350 dental hygiene students who were randomly assigned a structured questionnaire to complete. The final analysis included 321 students. The survey contents evaluated grit, core competencies, and general characteristics. The difference in the degree of grit and core competencies in conjunction with the general characteristics of the subjects was analyzed using the t-test/Mann Whitney U-test and the ANOVA/Kruskal-Wallis H test. Multiple regression analysis was then conducted to determine the factors affecting the core competencies of the subjects. Results: The difference of 'grit' according to general characteristics was statistically significant in 'major satisfaction', 'relationship', 'perceived academic achievement', 'grade point average (GPA)'. The difference in 'core competency' according to general characteristics was statistically significant in 'grade', 'department selection', 'major satisfaction', 'relationship', 'perceived academic achievement', 'GPA'. Among the sub-areas of 'grit', 'perseverance of effort' showed a high correlation with 'core competency' and was statistically significant. As a result of regression analysis, 'major satisfaction', 'perceived academic achievement' and 'grit' of dental hygiene students had a statistically significant influence on 'core competency'. Meanwhile, 'GPA' was not seen to be statistically significant in 'core competency'. Conclusion: Grit, a non-cognitive factor, had a statistically significant effect on core competency, while the effects on GPA, a cognitive factor, were not statistically significant. Among the sub-factors of grit, 'perseverance of effort' had a statistically significant effect on 'problem-solving competency' and 'academic competency', which are 'core competency' sub factors.
