Background: The purpose of this study was to confirm the major motivation for and self-efficacy of career decisions among dental hygiene students and to analyze differences in career decision self-efficacy according to the major motivation. Methods: An online survey was conducted among 194 dental hygiene students. To investigate career decision self-efficacy, 18 questions were posed, including 5 questions on future planning, 4 questions on self-evaluation, 4 questions on job information collection, 3 questions on goal setting, and 2 questions on problem solving. The survey was conducted using a 5-point scale. Results: The motives for choosing a major were a high employment rate (68.6%), a desire to become a professional (36.1%), according to aptitude (27.8%), recommendations by others (26.3%), and according to grades (12.9%). The career decision self-efficacy of the study participants was in the order of self-evaluation factors (3.75 points), problem solving factors a (3.62 points), job information collection factors (3.59 points), future planning factors (3.46 points), goal setting factors (3.44 points) score was high. The career decision self-efficacy scores were higher when the major motivation was "because I want to become a professional" and "because I think I have an aptitude for it." Conclusion: It is necessary to give students who wish to major in dental hygiene an opportunity to consider whether they have an aptitude for it by providing information on not only major subjects but also the duties and roles of dental hygienists. In addition, it is necessary to develop a career education program to help dental hygiene students set their career goals.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to identify the efficiency of total dental care(TDC) internship program. Methods : Dental hygiene students participated in the total dental care(TDC) internship program for 4 weeks in dental clinics practice. A self-reported questionnaire was filled out from June to July in 2012. The questionnaire consisted of oral health condition and dental care services by the students, dentists, and dental hygienists after TDC internship program. Results : Satisfaction degree of the students was $3.92{\pm}0.68$ points. The patients satisfied with TDC internship program and it was helpful to their dental health care(4.0 points). There were significant changes in tooth brushing method, frequency and O'Leary plaque index. Satisfaction degree of the dentists was 4.09 points and that of the dental hygienists was 3.80 points. Conclusions : TDC internship program is very helpful for the students not only to play an outstanding role in their dental care activities after employment but also to establish the real identity of the dental hygienist.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of education service quality on major satisfaction in the dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 271 dental hygiene students in Seoul from April 1 to 20, 2016. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(6 items), education service quality (27 items), and major satisfaction of students(23 items). The instrument for education service quality was adapted from Parasuraman and modified by Park & Lee. Likert 5 point scale adaptation included physical environment, reliability, responsiveness, certainty, empathy, class professors, administrative facilities, and school activities accessibility. Cronbach's alpha test in the study was 0.956 in education service quality and 0.951 in major satisfaction. Results: The education service quality was 3.1 points. The lower grade students tended to have the higher education service quality (p<0.001). The satisfaction to class professors was 3.2 points. The education service quality had a significant positive relation to major satisfaction. The satisfaction was positively influenced by physical environment, responsiveness, certainty, and empathy. Conclusions: A positive motivation to education service quality leads to major satisfaction. A variety of strategies are very important to enhance the education specialization.
Background: This study was aimed at surveying the health science students' interest, demand, and awareness of virtual reality (VR) devices for learning to accumulate data necessary to develop and implement a curriculum with VR devices. Methods: We investigated the perception of health science students regarding VR device application and utilization. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 25.0 (IBM SPSS Statistics). Frequency and descriptive analyses were performed for the perception level of VR device use for university education. An independent twosamples t-test was performed to statistically analyze the perception level according to the VR device experience. A p-value < 0.05 was set to indicate statistical significance. Results: To the question "Do you wish to use VR devices for educational purposes?," 73% of the participants answered "yes." To the question "Do you think VR is necessary for the course curriculum?," over 65% answered "yes." Conclusion: In this study, health science students reported a great need for VR devices for education. VR-based classroom curriculum is expected to improve students' concentration, interest, and motivation.
Purpose. This study was to effects of major satisfaction of dental hygiene students and students on self-efficacy and career preparation behavior by investigation to provide basic data for developing a systematic career customized employment support program. Methods. The data were collected from 249 students from December 1 to 10 day 2016 in Yeongnam region. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics frequency, t-test(One-way ANOVA), logistic regression by SPSS WIN 18.0 program. Results. According to the general characteristics department dental hygiene students were major satisfied with 59.8%. Satisfaction with career decision self-efficacy and career preparation self-efficacy was found to $68.30{\pm}10.21$ statistically significant(p<.001). Satisfaction was also found to statistically significant ($32.65{\pm}6.05$) in career preparation behavior(p<.05). Satisfactory scores were found to 1.306 times higher than the dissatisfied students in the career decision self-efficacy goal setting. It was found that 8.423 times in satisfaction of career planning in career preparation. Conclusion. Considering the effects of dental hygiene students' major satisfaction on career decision self - efficacy and career preparation behavior, it would be good if we could develop and use various programs to improve the satisfaction of students in their majors.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of resilience on academic stress in dental hygiene students focused on the mediating effects of self-esteem. Methods: The subjects in this study were 208 selected dental hygiene students in colleges located in Y region of U city. A self-administered survey was conducted by 215 students from May 1 to 15, 2016. The study instruments included resilience, academic stress, and self-esteem. Results: The dental hygiene students got a mean of 4.40 in resilience. Among the subfactors of resilience, they got 4.42 in personal usefulness and 4.38 in self-receptivity. They got a mean of 3.29 in self-esteem and 2.76 in academic stress. Resilience was positively correlated with self-esteem (4=0.55, p<0.01) and negatively with academic stress (r=-0.28, p<0.01). Personal usefulness and usefulness of oneself had a positive correlation with self-esteem (r=0.51, 0.52, p<0.01) and had a negative correlation with academic stress (r=-0.25, -0.28, p<0.01). Self-esteem was negatively correlated with academic stress (r=-0.32, p<0.01). As for the mediating effects of self-esteem on the relationship between resilience and academic stress, self-esteem had perfect mediating effects on the relationship between the two. Conclusions: The results suggested that the self-esteem of the dental hygiene students played an important mediating role in the relationship between resilience and academic stress.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors that affect the test anxiety among dental hygiene students, including mental health and academic self-efficacy. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among dental hygiene students in a metropolitan area from July 21 to July 31, 2020, and finally, 196 copies were statistically analyzed using SPSS 21.0. Results: The mean values of mental health, academic self-efficacy, and test anxiety among the dental hygiene students were 1.47±0.41, 2.99±0.46, and 2.76±0.74, respectively. Mental health was negatively correlated with self-efficacy (r=-0.346, p<0.01) and positively correlated with test anxiety (r=0.405, p<0.01), while academic self-efficacy was negatively correlated with test anxiety (r=-0.424, p<0.001). The factors that affect test anxiety were somatization (p<0.05), anxiety (p<0.05), paranoia (p<0.05), task preference (p<0.05), and confidence (p<0.001), which are the detailed items of academic self-efficacy. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop and apply customized health programs suitable for individual students to improve their mental health, as well as develop teaching and learning methods that can improve academic selfefficacy, as mental health and academic self-efficacy are influential factors in test anxiety among dental hygiene students.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the job awareness of dental hygiene students about a dental hygienist, what duties they wanted to do as dental hygienists, their awareness of college courses related to the job performance of dental hygienists and whether they viewed the courses as what's most widely utilized for the clinical job performance of dental hygienists. It's ultimately meant to help provide good education for dental hygiene students to have the right understanding of dental hygienists and bolster their professionalism. Methods : The subjects in this study were 301 dental hygiene students in four different colleges located in the metropolitan area. A survey was conducted to find out their satisfaction level with the department of dental hygiene, personal characteristics, awareness of college courses and awareness of the duties of dental hygienists. Results : The group of students who deemed the life span of the dental hygienist occupation to be long put more significance on the college courses that should focus on job performance. As for the relationship between their personal characteristics and awareness of the college courses, their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the department and their ideas on the life span of the occupation made significant differences to that. The group of students who considered the life span of the occupation to be longer thought that the college courses would be more linked to the duties of dental hygienists and their job performance and should be given more weight, and there were significant differences among them in their view of the life span of the occupation and awareness of the college courses that should be given more weight(p<.05). Their view of how much the college courses would be linked to the duties of dental hygienists had a statistically significant correlation to that of the college courses that should focus on the clinical job performance of dental hygienists. Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings suggest that as part of the regular curriculum, the kind of education that aims at boosting the professionalism and job performance of dental hygienists as experts should be provided for dental hygiene students to build the right values as professional dental hygienists.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dental hygiene students' clinical practice stress, satisfaction and major satisfaction on career preparation behaviors. Methods:This study was conducted targeting the dental hygiene students who have clinical practice experience. The final 305 subjects were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 program. Results: The correlation between clinical practice stress and career satisfaction and career preparation behavior decreases with the higher degree of clinical practice and career preparation behavior. Analysis results about the affecting factors on the level of satisfaction with major satisfaction factors showed the highest factor of preparation behavior, followed by clinical practice and clinical practice stress in order. Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-esteem and interpersonal relationship abilities on department satisfaction in the dental hygiene students. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the dental hygiene students in Busan and Ulsan from March to May 2013. Results : Self-esteem had a positive relation with interpersonal relationship abilities(r=0.487, p<0.001) and department satisfaction (r=0.308, p<0.001). Interpersonal relationship had influence on department satisfaction (r=0.347, p<0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed positive relations with aptitude for dental hygienics(p<0.001), satisfaction with school facilities(p<0.001), interpersonal relationship abilities(p<0.001), choice motive for dental hygiene(p<0.05), self-esteem(p<0.05), and gender(p<0.05). Conclusions : To improve the department satisfaction, it is necessary to enhance self-esteem and interpersonal relationship abilities in the dental hygiene students by group counseling and active communication program.
