Dental polymer-based luting materials are classified into esthetic resin cement, adhesive resin cement and self-adhesive resin cement. Due to the different component of each type of resin cement, the preconditioning method of tooth surface and the steps are different from each type of resin cement. The pre-treatment of adherend (ceramic, resin and metal) surface also varies with the type of resin cement and the manufacturer. In this study, the characteristics of each type of resin cement, mechanical properties, indication and advantages were investigated. Through these, clinical tips on using resin cements were suggested.
The authors have studied the marginal leakage of various dental cements; Fynal cement (Caulk), Zinc cement (S.S. White) Carbo cement (Shofu, Poly-carboxylate cement), EBA cement (Opotow alumina cement), Propac (G-C's zinc oxide euginol cement), and Super cement (Shofu oxyphosphate zinc cement), by means of penetration of 2% methylene blue solution between orden crown restorations and human teeth in 150 cases. The result revealed as follow
1. None of the cements tested were free from dye penetration.
2. There was a wide difference in dye penetration among the trade brands of dental cement when immersed in dye solution before setting of cements.
3. EBA cement and Carbo cement showed comparatively low grade of dye penetration at the restorative margins.
This paper reflects on the state of the art of two kinds of tooth hard tissue (enamel and dentin) bonding with resin cement. After presenting composition of resin cement, concepts of enamel bonding and resin bonding are addressed. Special attention is devoted to the concept and advantage of self-etching technique. Finally, recommended clinical performance regarding bonding to tooth with resin cement is summarized.
Recently, there are much improvement in optical and mechanical properties of dental ceramic materials coupled with improved fabrication techniques, which have caused a considerable shift in the preference of the dentists to ceramic restorations. Because the chemical composition and microstructure of all-ceramic materials are different by the type, correct choice of cement type and surface treatment procedure, and cementation strategy is essential for the success of ceramic restorations with adequate retention and decreased incidence of complications. This manuscript reviews on the most often prescribed and some newly developed ceramic materials, and the selection criteria and usage guidelines of cement materials that are used in conjunction with various ceramic materials. This manuscript emphasizes that continuous updating the information of newly developed ceramic and cement materials and application techniques by the dentists and dental staffs are demanding in response to the constantly improving ceramic and cement materials and corresponding application protocol changes.
This study was designed to observe the marginal leakage of three permanent cements affected by three temporary cements. The temporary cements used in this study were Zinc oxide-eugenol, Non-eugenol, and Calcium hydroxide cements and the permanent cements were Zinc phosphate, Polycarboxylate and Alumina reinforced EBA cements. To measure the dye penetration into permanently cemented zone, the experimental specimens were treated with the temporary cements for a week. An analysis of the data obtained from 120 specimens resulted in the following conclusions: 1. Regardless of the types of the permanent cements used, using Calcium hydroxide cement as temporary cement showed higher marginal leakage than other temporary cements. 2. Using Polycarboxylate cement as permanent cement showed less marginal leakage than other permanent cements. 3. The marginal leakage in zinc phosphate cement was similar to Alumina reinforced EBA cement regardless of the types of the temporary cements.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to examine the abutment screw stability of screw- and cement-retained implant-supported dental prosthesis (SCP) after simulated cement washout as well as the stability of SCP cements after complete loosening of abutment screws. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty-six titanium CAD/CAM-made implant prostheses were fabricated on two implants placed in the resin models. Each prosthesis is a two-unit SCP: one screw-retained and the other cemented. After evaluating the passive fit of each prosthesis, all implant prostheses were randomly divided into 3 groups: screwed and cemented SCP (Control), screwed and non-cemented SCP (Group 1), unscrewed and cemented SCP (Group 2). Each prosthesis in Control and Group 1 was screwed and/or cemented, and the preloading reverse torque value (RTV) was evaluated. SCP in Group 2 was screwed and cemented, and then unscrewed (RTV=0) after the cement was set. After cyclic loading was applied, the postloading RTV was measured. RTV loss and decementation ratios were calculated for statistical analysis. RESULTS. There was no significant difference in RTV loss ratio between Control and Group 1 (P=.16). No decemented prosthesis was found among Control and Group 2. CONCLUSION. Within the limits of this in vitro study, the stabilities of SCP abutment screws and cement were not significantly changed after simulated cement washout or screw loosening.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate human dental pulp response to pulpotomy with calcium hydroxide (CH), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and calcium enriched mixture (CEM) cement. Materials and Methods: A total of nine erupted third molars were randomly assigned to each pulpotomy group. The same clinician performed full pulpotomies and coronal restorations. The patients were followed clinically for six months; the teeth were then extracted and prepared for histological assessments. The samples were blindly assessed by an independent observer for pulp vitality, pulp inflammation, and calcified bridge formation. Results: All patients were free of clinical signs/symptoms of pulpal/periradicular diseases during the follow up period. In CH group, one tooth had necrotic radicular pulp; other two teeth in this group had vital uninflamed pulps with complete dentinal bridge formation. In CEM cement and MTA groups all teeth had vital uninflamed radicular pulps. A complete dentinal bridge was formed beneath CEM cement and MTA in all roots. Odontoblast-like cells were present beneath CEM cement and MTA in all samples. Conclusions: This study revealed that CEM cement and MTA were reliable endodontic biomaterials in full pulpotomy treatment. In contrast, the human dental pulp response to CH might be unpredictable.
Advancements in bio-ceramic technology has revolutionised endodontic material science by enhancing the treatment outcome for patients. This class of dental materials conciliates excellent biocompatibility with high osseoconductivity that render them ideal for endodontic care. Few recently introduced bio-ceramic materials have shown considerable clinical success over their early generations in terms of good handling characteristics. Calcium enriched mixture (CEM) cement, Endosequence sealer, and root repair materials, Biodentine and BioAggregate are the new classes of bio-ceramic materials. The aim of this literature review is to present investigations regarding properties and applications of CEM cement in endodontics. A review of the existing literature was performed by using electronic and hand searching methods for CEM cement from January 2006 to December 2013. CEM cement has a different chemical composition from that of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) but has similar clinical applications. It combines the biocompatibility of MTA with more efficient characteristics, such as significantly shorter setting time, good handling characteristics, no staining of tooth and effective seal against bacterial leakage.

Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of ultrasonic agitation of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), calcium silicate-based cement (CSC), and Sealer 26 (S26) on adaptation at the cement/dentin interface and push-out bond strength. Materials and Methods: Sixty maxillary canines were divided into 6 groups (n = 10): MTA, S26, and CSC, with or without ultrasonic activation (US). After obturation, the apical portions of the teeth were sectioned, and retrograde cavities were prepared and filled with cement by hand condensation. In the US groups, the cement was activated for 60 seconds: 30 seconds in the mesio-distal direction and 30 seconds in the buccal-lingual direction, using a mini Irrisonic insert coupled with the ultrasound transducer. After the materials set, 1.5-mm thick sections were obtained from the apexes. The presence of gaps and the bond between cement and dentin were analyzed using low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy. Push-out bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine. Results: Ultrasonic agitation increased the interfacial adaptation of the cements. The S26 US group showed a higher adaptation value than MTA (p < 0.05). US improved the push-out bond strength for all the cements (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The US of retrograde filling cements enhanced the bond to the dentin wall of the root-end filling materials tested.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of resin cement thickness on the microtensile bond strength between zirconium-oxide ceramic and resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty-two freshly extracted molars were transversely sectioned at the deep dentin level and bonded to air-abraded zirconium oxide ceramic disks. The specimens were divided into 8 groups based on the experimental conditions (cement type: Rely X UniCem or Panavia F 2.0, cement thickness: 40 or 160 ${\mu}m$, storage: thermocycled or not). They were cut into microbeams and stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 h. Microbeams of non-thermocycled specimens were submitted to a microtensile test, whereas those of thermocycled groups were thermally cycled for 18,000 times immediately before the microtensile test. Three-way ANOVA and Sheffe's post hoc tests were used for statistical analysis (${\alpha}$=95%). RESULTS. All failures occurred at the resin-zirconia interface. Thermocycled groups showed lower microtensile bond strength than non-thermocycled groups (P<.001). Differences in cement thickness did not influence the resin-zirconia microtensile bond strength given the same resin cement or storage conditions (P>.05). The number of adhesive failures increased after thermocycling in all experimental conditions. No cohesive failure was observed in any experimental group. CONCLUSION. When resin cements of adhesive monomers are applied over air-abraded zirconia restorations, the degree of fit does not influence the resin-zirconia microtensile bond strength.
