Binary systems of a white dwarf showing mass transfer activities are classified into cataclysmic variables and symbiotic stars. In the case of cataclysmic variables, the companion is usually a late type main sequence star filling its Roche lobe, where material is transferred through the inner Lagrangian point to form an accretion disk around the white dwarf. The disk becomes unstable and highly viscous when the surface density exceeds the critical density, leading to dwarf nova outbursts. In contrast, symbiotic stars are wide binary systems having a giant as the mass donor. Some fraction of giant stellar wind is accreted to the white dwarf giving rise to various symbiotic activities. In particular, half of symbiotics show Raman O VI at 6830 and 7088, which are important spectroscopic probe of mass transfer process. Monitoring observations using 1 m class telescopes will produce valuable information regarding the mass loss and mass transfer to white dwarf stars, shedding much light on the last stage of stellar evolution of low and intermediate mass stars.
By virtue of chord-length density function from the field of statistical physics, this paper introduced a quantitative approach to estimate the distribution of cement paste thickness between aggregates in concrete. Dynamics mixing method based on molecular dynamics was employed to generate one model structure, then image analysis algorithm was used to obtain the distribution of thickness of cement paste in model structure for the purpose of verification. By comparison of probability density curves and cumulative probability curves of the cement paste thickness among neighboring aggregates, it is found that the theoretical results are consistent with the simulation. Furthermore, for the model mortar and concrete mixtures with practical volume fraction of Fuller-type aggregate, this analytical formula was employed to predict the influence of aggregate volume fraction and aggregate fineness. And evolution of its mean values were also investigated with the variation of volume fraction of aggregate as well as the fineness of aggregates in model mortars and concretes.

We evaluated the effect of processing variables on microstructural evolution interface irregularity between Ag sheath and superconductor core and resultant critical current density(J$_{c}$) of (Bi,Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{x}$(2223) superconductor tape. The value of J$_{c}$ was significantly influenced by the interface irregularity, degree of texturing and relative 2223 content. The interface became more irregular(sausage effect), while the degree of texturing gradually improved as the dimension of tape decreased during forming process. As the dimension of wire/tape were changed from diameter of 3.25 mm to thickness of 0.20 mm, J$_{c}$ value was observed to be increased by 10 times. In addition, optimum sintering temperature for improved J$_{c}$ was observed to be 835$^{\circ}C$ in a ambient atmosphere probably due to combined effect of both improved texturing and high 2223 content. Microstructural investigation showed the degree of texturing was degraded by the existence of both second phases and interface irregularity. It was observed that larger grain size and better texturing was developed near relatively flat interface compared to those inside superconducting core.ting core.

In the past decade, there have been many advances in whole-genome sequencing in domestic animals, as well as the development of "next-generation" sequencing technologies and high-throughput genotyping platforms. Consequently, these advances have led to the creation of the high-density SNP array as a state-of-the-art tool for genetics and genomics analyses of domestic animals. The emergence and utilization of SNP arrays will have significant impacts not only on the scale, speed, and expense of SNP genotyping, but also on theoretical and applied studies of quantitative genetics, population genetics and molecular evolution. The most promising applications in agriculture could be genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and genomic selection for the improvement of economically important traits. However, some challenges still face these applications, such as incorporating linkage disequilibrium (LD) information from HapMap projects, data storage, and especially appropriate statistical analyses on the high-dimensional, structured genomics data. More efforts are still needed to make better use of the high-density SNP arrays in both academic studies and industrial applications.

In this paper we study the effect of bit-to-symbol mappings on the convergence behavior of turbo equalizers employing low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over high order modulations. We analyze the effective SNR of the outputs from linear minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) equalizers and the convergence property of LDPC decoding for different symbol mappings. Numerical results show that the bit-reliability (BR) mapping provides better performance than random mapping in LDPC-coded turbo equalizers over high order modulations. We also verify the effect of symbol mappings through the noise threshold and error performance.
We use two-dimensional high-resolution MHD simulations to investigate the effects of magnetic fields on the formation and evolution of such substructures as well as on the mass inflow rates to the galaxy center. We find that there exists an outermost x1-orbit relative to which gaseous responses to an imposed stellar bar potential are completely different between inside and outside. Inside this orbit, gas is shocked into dust lanes and infalls to form a nuclear ring. Magnetic fields are compressed in dust lanes, reducing their peak density. Magnetic stress removes further angular momentum of the gas at the shocks and leads to a smaller and more centrally distributed ring, resulting in the mass inflow rates larger, by more than two orders of magnitude, than in the unmagnetized counterparts. Outside the outermost x1-orbit, on the other hand, an MHD dynamo operates near the corotation and bar-end regions, efficiently amplifying magnetic fields. The amplified fields shape into trailing magnetic arms with strong fields and low density. The base of the magnetic arms have a thin layer in which magnetic fields with opposite polarity reconnect via a tearing-mode instability. This produces numerous magnetic islands with large density which propagate along the arms to turn the outer disk into a highly chaotic state.
It has been suggested that merging plays an important role in the formation and the evolution of early-type galaxies. Optical-NIR color gradients of early-type galaxies in high density environments are found to be less steep than those in low density environment, hinting frequent merger activities in early-type galaxies in high density environment. In order to confirm if the flat color gradient is the result of dry merger, we decided to look deeply to find merging features and get their relation with color gradient. We selected samples which show extreme values of optical-NIR color gradients based on the data of previous study, and observed them at Maidanak observatory 1.5m telescope with long exposure. After masking out overlaid sources, our analysis reveals that these galaxies do not have extreme color gradient values. High degree sky flat technique was used during observation to aid discovery of faint, extended features. However, flatness of detector (SNUCAM) was good enough, so we could not see any marked improvement in image quality compared to those using normal sky flats. Additionally we noticed a feature that looks like merging tidal tail in the CFHT archival image, but this does not show up on the image we obtained. This demonstrates that flatness and correct sky estimation is very important when we look for faint merging features. In future we plan to enlarge the number of the sample.

CS molecule is known to be adsorbed onto dust in cold dense cores, causing its significant depletion in the center region of cores. This study is aimed to investigate the depletion of CS molecule with optically thin $C^{34}S$ molecular line observations, including significance of its differentiation depending on the evolutionary status of the dense cores. We mapped five evolved starless cores, L1544, L1552, L1689B, L694-2 and L1197 using two molecular lines, $C^{34}S$ (J=2-1) and $N_2H^+$ (J=1-0) with NRO 45 m telescope. The $H^2$ column density and temperature structures of each targets were obtained by SED fitting for Herschel continuum images and the internal number density profiles by model fitting. All of the integrated intensity maps of $C^{34}S$ show depletion holes and 'semi-ring-like' distribution, indicating that the depletion of CS is clear and general. The radial profiles of CS abundance also show significant decrease towards the core center, while $N_2H^+$ abundance is almost constant or enhanced. We find that the more evolved cores with higher $H^2$ density tend to have a stronger depletion of CS. Our data strongly support claims that CS molecule generally depletes out in the central regions of starless dense cores and such chemical differentiation is closely related to their evolution.
We performed high pressure high temperature (HPHT) sintering for the 20 nm MgO powders at the temperatures from $600^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ for only 5 min under 7 GPa pressure condition. To investigate the microstructure evolution and physical property change of the HPHT sintered MgO samples, we employed a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), density and Vickers hardness measurements. The SEM results showed that the grain size of the sintered MgO increased from 200 nm to $1.9{\mu}m$ as the sintering temperature increased. The density results showed that the sintered MgO achieved a more than 95% of the theoretical density in overall sintering temperature range. Based on Vickers hardness test, we confirmed that hardness increased as temperature increased. Our results implied that we might obtain the dense sintered MgO samples with an extremely short time and low temperature HPHT process compared to conventional electrical furnace sintering process.

We investigated the corrosion behavior of commercially pure cold working processed (CP)-Ti with coarse-grained (CG) microstructure heat-treated at $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. It is observed that corrosion resistance of as-received CP-Ti heat-treated at $400^{\circ}C$, at which recrystallization proceeds, is largely improved. Interestingly, the mechanical property of CP-Ti sample at $400^{\circ}C$ was scarcely deteriorated. It is attributed to the decrease of the defects such as strain variance and dislocation density. On the other hand, the annealing treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ of CP-Ti plate causes to grain growth with the noticeable reduction of mechanical property. Hence, it is considered that defect density such as strain and dislocation density is important microstructural parameter for the improvement of corrosion resistance. The introduction of proper annealing treatment can help to improve corrosion resistance without scarifying mechanical property of CP-Ti.
