  • It has been suggested that merging plays an important role in the formation and the evolution of early-type galaxies (ETGs). Optical-NIR color gradients of ETGs in high density environments are found to be less steep than those of ETGs in low density environments, hinting frequent merger activities in ETGs in high density environments. In order to examine if the flat color gradients are the result of dry mergers, we studied the relations between merging features, color gradient, and environments of 281 low redshift ETGs selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe82. The sample contains 222 relaxed ETGs, 38 ETGs with tidal features, 10 galaxies with dust features and 11 galaxies with tidal and dust features, and Near Infrared (NIR) images are taken from UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS). We find that r-K color gradients of field sample galaxies are steeper than those of sample ETGs within cluster environments. For the field sample galaxies, a relatively large number of galaxies with peculiar features contribute to the steeper color gradients, while the absence of these peculiar early-type galaxies make color gradients of the cluster sample galaxies intact. In high density environment, ETGs are already evolved and relaxed, resulting flat color gradients. However, in low density environments, a majority of ETGs undergone merging recently which makes the color gradients steep.

In order to examine if the flat color gradients are the result of dry mergers, we studied the relations between merging features, luminosities, environments and color gradients of 196 low redshift ETGs selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe82. Near Infrared (NIR) images are taken from UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS). Color (r-K) gradients of ETGs with tidal features are a little flatter than relaxed ETGs, but not significant. We found that massive (> 10^11.3 solar masses) ETGs have -40% less scattered color gradients than less massive ETGs. The less scattered color gradients of massive ETGs could be evidence of dry merger processes in the evolution of massive ETGs. We found no relation between color gradients of ETGs and their environments.

  • This experiment was carried out to select of heterokaryon based on the different buoyant densities of protoplasts. Protoplats were isolated from cultured cells (calli) of Nicotiana tobacum(cv. BY4) and from mesophyll cells of N. glauca. The two types of protoplats were fractionated by centrifugation in an iso-osmotic (770 mOs/kg. H2O) density gradients condition. Major difference in the buoyant density exists between two types of protoplasts isolated from different cells. The mesophyll protoplasts were fractionated in the higher gradient interphases than that of callus protoplasts. The two types of fractionated protoplasts were fused with 40% polyethylene glycol (PEG), and the protoplasts treated with PEG were separated by centrifugation in the same density gradients condition. The heterokaryons were fractionated in the intermediate density gradients.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the possibility of sex preselection by gradients methods using bovine serum albumin in rabbits. Artificial insemination was performed with sperm from the top and bottom layer of rabbit semen separated by bovine serum albumin gradients. Various characteristics of separated sperm, and the conception rate and secondary sex ratio at artificial insemination with separated sperm were compared. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The sperm from the bottom layer showed significanty high value in motility, percent of normal sperm and progressive motility as compared with control sperm and the sperm and the sperm from the top layer. 2. The conception rate of sperm from the bottom layer was higher than that of the top layer. But secondary sex ratio was not altered by this methods.

  • Thermal loads, especially thermal gradients, have a considerable effect on the behaviors of large-scale bridges throughout their lifecycles. Bridge design specifications provide minimal guidance regarding thermal gradients for simple bridge girders and do not consider transversal thermal gradients in wide girder cross-sections. This paper investigates the three-dimensional thermal gradients of arch bridge girders by integrating long-term field monitoring data recorded by a structural health monitoring system, with emphasis on the vertical and transversal thermal gradients of wide concrete-steel composite girders. Based on field monitoring data for one year, the time-dependent characteristics of temperature and three-dimensional thermal gradients in girder cross-sections are explored. A statistical analysis of thermal gradients is conducted, and the probability density functions of transversal and vertical thermal gradients are estimated. The extreme thermal gradients are predicted with a specific return period by employing an extreme value analysis, and the profiles of the vertical thermal gradient are established for bridge design. The transversal and vertical thermal gradients are developed to help engineers understand the thermal behaviors of concrete-steel composite girders during their service periods.

  • The B-fields in Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) is a large program of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) to study the roles of magnetic fields in molecular clouds on intermediate scales (a few thousands au or larger scales), in which a large number of researchers over the world are involved. This project was initiated in 2016 with polarimetric observations of nearby star-forming regions and has been extended toward massive and farther regions (BISTRO-2) and various evolutionary stages and environmental conditions (BISTRO-3). The current status of the BISTRO projects is reported. In addition, we discuss magnetic fields in the Serpens Main molecular cloud, which is one of the BISTRO star-forming regions. Utilizing the Histogram of Relative Orientations method, which compares polarization directions with density gradients, we show that magnetic fields are parallel to filaments in less dense filamentary structures but perpendicular to dense ones. Furthermore, the magnetic field directions with respect to density gradients vary again with density in denser core regions, which is understood by core formation and pinched fields. Note: (PI) D. • Magnetic fields play an important role in star-forming processes by regulating gravitational collapse. In filamentary structures of star-forming regions, magnetic fields are likely to be aligned with minor axes of filamentary molecular clouds because matter freely moves along magnetic field lines. Orion A region, one of the well-known high-mass star forming regions, has long filament structure. In order to study magnetic field directions with respect to the filamentary structure in Orion A, we have analyzed $850{\mu}m$ dust polarization observations obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We found tight correlation of dust intensity gradients and magnetic field directions. It was estimated that 81% of magnetic field segments are aligned with density gradients within 40 degree. In conclusion, we confirmed most of magnetic field segments are perpendicular to the major axis of the filament in Orion A.

  • It has been suggested that merging plays an important role in the formation and the evolution of early-type galaxies. Optical-NIR color gradients of early-type galaxies in high density environments are found to be less steep than those in low density environment, hinting frequent merger activities in early-type galaxies in high density environment. In order to confirm if the flat color gradient is the result of dry merger, we decided to look deeply to find merging features and get their relation with color gradient. We selected samples which show extreme values of optical-NIR color gradients based on the data of previous study, and observed them at Maidanak observatory 1.5m telescope with long exposure. After masking out overlaid sources, our analysis reveals that these galaxies do not have extreme color gradient values. High degree sky flat technique was used during observation to aid discovery of faint, extended features. However, flatness of detector (SNUCAM) was good enough, so we could not see any marked improvement in image quality compared to those using normal sky flats. Additionally we noticed a feature that looks like merging tidal tail in the CFHT archival image, but this does not show up on the image we obtained. This demonstrates that flatness and correct sky estimation is very important when we look for faint merging features. In future we plan to enlarge the number of the sample.

  • Purpose: To investigate the characteristics of the newly marketed, Insight dental X-ray film. Materials and Methods: Kodak Ultraspeed (DF-58), E-speed, Agfa Dentus M2, and Kodak Insight (IP-21) films were radiographed using a Trophy intra-oral radiographic machine. 10 step exposure times were prepared and each step exposure was monitored using a FH 40G (ESM Eberline Instruments) dosimeter for each of the 4 types of intra-oral film. All films were manually processed and the radiographic densities at 6 sites of each processed film were measured, and the characteristic curves of each of the 4 types intra-oral films were created utilizing these dosimetric data and radiographic densities, based on ISO 5779. The film contrast, speed, and base plus fog density of Insight film were compared with those of the 3 other films examined in this experiment. Results : E-speed film showed greatest average gradients followed by Insight film. E-speed and Ultraspeed film showed great average gradients at low density levels. Insight film showed the fastest speed followed by E-speed, Dentus M2 and Ultraspeed film. Dentus M2 film showed greatest base plus fog density level followed by Insight film. Conclusion : Kodak Insight film showed fastest film speed with comparable film contrast on characteristic curve.
