  • Previous studies for routing In USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Networks) appear to be unreliable due to the dependence on non-spatial data and the lack of map overlay analysis. Multiple spatial parameters and radio propagation modeling techniques were integrated to derive RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) value between route nodes and produce a highly reliable path map. It was possible to identify area-wide patterns of USN route subject to many different Influences (e.g. the specific effects of radio blocking factors such as the visible area, road area, cell duplicated area, and building density), which cannot be acquired by traditional non-spatial modeling. The quantitative evidence concerning the USN route for individual cell as well as entire study area would be utilized as major tools to visualize paths in real-time and to select alternative path when failure or audition of route node occurs.

  • To find out an adequate failure criterion in two-dimensional linear elastic crack problems, finite element programs, SED, which determine stress intensity factors $K_I, K_{II}$, crack angle and peak load by the minimum strain energy density failure criterion were developed. In this program, the conventional quadratic isoparametric elements were used in all regions except the crack tip zone where triangular singular elements with 6 nodes were used. The results of SED were compared with the results of those which followed by the maximum circumferential tensile stress criteria and those by the maximum energy release rate criteria and those by Jenq and Shah`s experiments of the same geometry and material properties. The maximum energy release rate criteria were better close to those of the Jenq and Shah`s experiments than the maximum circumferential tensile stress criteria and the minimum strain energy density criteria.

  • Near-earth space is composed of plasmas which embed a number of plasma waves. Space plasmas consist of electrons and multi-ion that determine local wave propagation characteristics. In multi-ion plasmas, it is difficult to find out analytic solutions from the dispersion relation in general. In this work, we have developed a model with an arbitrary magnetic field and density as well as multi-ion plasmas. This model allows us to investigate how plasma waves behave when they propagate along realistic magnetic field lines, which are assumed by IGRF(International Geomagnetic Reference Field). The results are found to be useful for the analysis of the in situ observational data in space. For instance, if waves are assumed to propagate into the polar region, from the equatorial region, our model quantitatively show how polarization is altered along earth travel path.

  • A generalized elastic solution for a transient mode III crack propagating along the gradient in functionally graded materials (FGMs) is obtained through an asymptotic analysis. The shear modulus and density of the FGMs are assumed to vary exponentially along the gradient. The stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are obtained in terms of powers of radial coordinates, and the coefficients depend on the time rates of the change of the crack tip speed and stress intensity factors. The influence of nonhomogeneity and transients on the higher order terms of the stress and displacement fields is discussed.

  • Short-term fading in a mobile radio channel is mainly caused by multipath reflected wave by local scatterers or natural obstacles surrounding a mobile unit. In this paper, we analyze probability density function(PDF), level crossing rate(LCR) and widths and depths of fades for the measured field strength data in Seoul and Daejeon areas. As a result, the satatistical distribution of signal variations within any small area with the constant mean value becomes the Rayleigh distribution The variation of fade depths is small regardless of the environment such as urban, suburban. etc. However, the variation of fade widths is large with the change of circumstantial structures and environment. the maximum level crossing rate is obtained near the mean value.

  • The ciculation due to bottom density current produced by a dense inflow into a small reservoir is analysed by numerical scheme. Before the front of the density current arrives at the downstream end, the mixing in the reservoir is mainly caused by the anticlockwise vortex formed at the downstream of plunging point along the movement of bottom density current. Upon the arrival of the front of the density current at the downstream end an internal surge is created through an internal hydraulic jump. With repeated propagation of the internal surge back and forth the mixing in the reservoir is progressed and the thickness of dense layer is increased upward. The dilution of the overflow at downstream end is found to depend on inflow densimetric Froude number, reservoir length and elapsed time. The time required for the overflow to attain a specified dilution increases as reservoir length increases and Fre decreases.

  • Shock-focusing concave reflectors can have parabolic, circular or elliptic cross-sections. They produce effectively a very high pressure at the focusing point. In the past, many optical images have been obtained on shock focusing via experiments. Measurement of field variables is, however, difficult in the experiment. Using the wave propagation algorithm and the Cartesian embedded boundary method, we have successfully obtained numerical Schlieren images that appear very much like the experimental results. In addition, we obtained the detailed field variables such as pressure, velocity, density and vorticity in the unsteady domain. The present numerical results have made it possible to understand the shock focusing phenomenon in more detail than before.

  • We numerically investigated propagation of various waves in the two-phase flows such as sound wave, shock wave, rarefaction wave, and contact discontinuity in terms of pressure, void fraction, velocity and density of the two phases. The waves have been generated by a hydrodynamic shock tube, a pair of symmetric impulsive expansion, impulsive pressure and impulsive void waves. The six compressible two-fluid two-phase conservation laws with interfacial friction terms have been solved in two fractional steps. The first PDE Operator is solved by the HLL scheme and the second Source Operator by the semi-implicit stiff ODE solver. In the HLL scheme, the fastest wave speeds were estimated by the analytic eigenvalues of an approximate Jacobian matrix. We have discussed how the interfacial friction terms affect the wave structures in the numerical solution.

  • To analysis on the degradation of the satellite communication signal due to Asian dust that appeared on Korean peninsula during March and April 2004, EIRPs of L, S, C, Ku and Ka frequency bands of the downlink of satellite communication link were measured by Satellite Signal Monitoring Center located in Icheon, Korea. The measured EIRP values were compared to the total dust density and dust particle distribution that were measured using PM 10 and OPC by the Korea Meteorological Administration, and the possible correlation between three sets data were analyzed.

  • The state-of-the art of detection and measurements of non-ionizing radiations are reviewed in relation to protection requirements, especially for electromagnetic and ultraviolet radiations. Dosimetric quantities, instruments and considerations needed for measurement are briefly explained. For electromagnetic radiation, the power density levels from various practical sources are summarized for reference uses. Large errors remain in the measurements of non-ionizinf radiations in general. Technical needs of development in measurement and dosimetry of non-ionizing radiations, therefore, are promissing when the increasing public concerns about the adverse health effects of non-ionizing radiations and proliferation of their uses are taken into account.
