  • The mycelial growth of Pleurotus ostreatus in compost is strongly stimulated by solid-state fermentation with thermophilic fungi which were isolated from oyster mushroom compost. The biochemical characteristics of these thermophilic fungi were investigated. Cellulase and ligninase activities were not detected by clear zone effect on CMC and lignin media. All of thermophilic fungi grew well with high mycelial density on xylan media and the growing rate of Sepedonium sp. S-2 observed very high. In results of MUF-test, extracellular enzyme activity of Sepedonium sp. S-2, and S-5 measured very high. On the compost after high temperature fermentation with Sepedonium sp. S-2 and S-5, the mycelial growing rate of Pleurotus ostreatus was increased about 50% and it also showed the inhibiting effect on mycelial growth of Trichoderma sp. SJG-51. Isolated thermophilic fungi, Sepedonium sp. S-2 and S-5 were expected as very useful organism for making oyster mushroom compost.

  • One hundred fifty one specimens of Beauveria spp. from 19 different locations were collected from September 1 to August 31, 2002. Most of the isolates were identified as Beauveria. bassiana. Cordyceps staphylinidaecola collected from Mt. Obong in Chunchon City covered the host with mycelia which were produced 1 to 4 stromata along with asexual spores. The size of bright yellow ununiform stromata were about 45 mm and the head about $17mm{\times}4mm$. Perithecia completely immersed were $530{\sim}550{\times}290{\sim}300{\mu}m$ in size and mainly scattered on the head. Ascospore produced in asci in the size of $400{\sim}450{\times}4{\sim}5{\mu}m$ developed thread-like secondary spores, which were directly separated into secondary conidial spores. Conidia produced at apical portion of synnemata were $2.6{\sim}3.4{\times}1.2{\sim}1.9{\mu}m$ in size. High density of mycelium was observed at $25^{\circ}C$ ranged from pH 6.5 to 8.5 after 11 days of inoculation. It took 15 to 18 days after inoculation to fully grow on the medium mixed brown rice with pupa. Mycelium developed stromata on the medium 30 days after completion of mycelial growth, where perithecia were produced in 40 days.

  • It is known that semiconductor quantum-dot (QD) heterostructures have superior zero-dimensional quantum confinement, and they have been successfully applied to semiconductor laser diodes (QDLDs) for optical communication and infrared photodetectors (QDIPs) for thermal images [1]. The self-assembled QDs are normally formed at Stranski-Krastanov (S-K) growth mode utilizing the accumulated strain due to lattice-mismatch existing at heterointerfaces between QDs and cap layers. In order to increase the areal density and the number of stacks of QDs, recently, sub-monolayer (SML)-thick QDs (SQDs) with reduced strain were tried by equivalent thicknesses thinner than a wetting layer (WL) existing in conventional QDs (CQDs) by S-K mode. Despite that it is very different from CQDs with a well-defined WL, the SQD structure has been successfully applied to QDIP[2]. In this study, optical characteristics are investigated by using photoluminescence (PL) spectra taken from self-assembled InAs/GaAs QDs whose coverage are changing from submonolayer to a few monolayers. The QD structures were grown by using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on semi-insulating GaAs (100) substrates, and formed at a substrate temperature of 480$^{\circ}C$ followed by covering GaAs cap layer at 590$^{\circ}C$. We prepared six 10-period-stacked QD samples with different InAs coverages and thicknesses of GaAs spacer layers. In the QD coverage below WL thickness (~1.7 ML), the majority of SQDs with no WL coexisted with a small amount of CQDs with a WL, and multi-peak spectra changed to a single peak profile. A transition from SQDs to CQDs was found before and after a WL formation, and the sublevel of SQDs peaking at (1.32${\pm}$0.1) eV was much closer to the GaAs bandedge than that of CQDs (~1.2 eV). These revealed that QDs with no WL could be formed by near-ML coverage in InAs/GaAs system, and single-mode SQDs could be achieved by 1.5 ML just below WL that a strain field was entirely uniform.

  • An apparatus was made for the electrodeposition of alpha emitting actinide nuclides, $^{207}Bi$ and $^{210}Po$. The electrodeposition was made on a polished stainless steel plate cathode. The anode was made of platinum wire and to stir the solution. With the ammonium chloride as electrolyte initial pH = 4, chloride concentration = 0.6M and solution volume = 15ml, a current of 1.5 ampere(current density = 0.59A/$cm^2$) was flowed for 100 minutes for the quantitative recovery of electrodeposition and on average recovery of 98.3% was obtained within ${\pm}$0.7% uncertainty. Alpha spectrometry of the electrodeposited sample showed alpha peaks from $^{210}Po, ^{234}U$ and $^{239}Pu$ having energy resolution (FWHM) of 18.3, 21.8 and 36.0 keV respectively. The electrodeposition and alpha spectrometry for a natural uranium sample of domestic origin gave $^{238}U : ^{234}U = 1 : 6.1{\times}10^{-5}$ and for a neutron-irradiated uranium sample did $^{238}U : ^{239}Pu : ^{241}Am = 100 : 0.0263 : 5.20{times}10^{-5}$. The result of $^{238}U$ determination in the irradiated sample by electrodeposition-alpha spectrometry was in accord within ${\pm}1.6%$ of relative error with the results of solid fluorimetry and mass spectrometry. For $^{239}Pu$ the result of electrodeposition-alpha spectrometry was in accord within ${\pm}$4.0% of relative error with the results of anion exchange separation and the thenoyltrifluoroacetone(TTA) extraction both followed by alpha spectrometries.

  • The regioselectivity in the nitrosation of seven N-methyl-N'-substituted phenylureas ($CH_3NHCONHC_6H_4-G$; G = H, p-CH$_3$, m-CH$_3$, m-CH$_3$O, p-F, m-F, m-Br) was examined using NaNO$_2$ and 4 different acids (diluted HCl, HCOOH, CH$_3$COOH, CF$_3$COOH). In all cases, the two regioisomeric products, N-nitroso-N-methyl-N'-substituted phenylureas (A) and N'-nitroso-N-methyl-N'-substituted phenylureas (B) were observed to be formed as major products and product ratios were determined by the integration of their methyl peaks in $^1$H-NMR. Electron donating substitutent(G) on phenyl of the ureas generally led to increase the ratio of B to A. The data have revealed that the relative sensitivity of the nitrosonium species (HONO, HCOONO, CH$_3$COONO, CF$_3$COONO) toward the change of electron density on nitrogen with phenyl substitutents are 1.00 : 0.93 : 0.78 : > ∼ 0.7.

  • Lithium nickel oxide ($Li_{2x}Ni_{1-x}O$) thin films have been prepared by the RF sputtering of lithiated nickel oxide target, where the film microstructure was controlled by the sputtering atmosphere $(Ar/O_2)$ and the substrate temperature ($T_s=50/230^{\circ}C$). From the transmission electron microscopic analysis, it is found that the most porous film with the grain size of $∼80\AA$ could be fabricated under the sputtering atmosphere of $P(O_2)=8{\times}10^2$ mbar with the $$T_s$=50^{\circ}C.$ In the optical and electrochemical studies, the$Li_{2x}Ni_{1-x}O$ films exhibit a significant electrochromic property in association with the lithium insertion/deinsertion process. The amount of charge insertion ($Q_i$) and the optical density (OD) variation depend on the crystallinity of the film as well as its thickness, and for the $Li_{2x}Ni_{1-x}O$ film (170 nm thickness) prepared under $O_2$ atmosphere and $T_s=50^{\circ}C$, the OD could be increased up to ∼1.3 by the charge insertion with $Q_i=30\;mC/cm^2.$

  • The critical micelle concentration(CMC) and the counterion binding $constant(\beta)$ at the CMC of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB) in a series of aqueous solutions containing medium chain-length n-alcohols(Propanol, Butanol, Pentanol and Hexanol) have been determined from the concentration dependence of electrical conductance at serveral temperature from $17^{\circ}C\;to\;41^{\circ}C.$ Thermodynamic parameters $({\Delta}G^o_m,\;{\Delta}H^o_m,\;{\Delta}S^o_m,\;and\;{\Delta}C_p)$ associated with micelle formation of CTAB have been also estimated from the temperature dependence of CMC and $\beta$ values, and the significance of these parameters and their relation to the theory of micelle formation have been considered. The results show that an enthalpy-entropy compensation effect is usually observed for the micellization of CTAB. The effects of n-alcohols on the micellar properties (CMC and $\beta$) of CTAB solutions have been also investigated. The addition of n-alcohol to the CTAB solution in a small quantity decreases the CMC value and the counterion binding constant $(\beta)$ at the CMC, but the addition of n-alcohol in an excessive quantity increases the CMC values on the conterary. These results have been explained in terms of the effect of the micelle-solubilized alcohol on the micellar surface charge density.

  • The electronic structure and properties of the 1H-indene and mono-sila-1H-indene series have been investigated using basis set of 6-31G(d, p) and hybrid density functional theory. Basic measures of aromatic character derived from structure, molecular orbitals, a variety of magnetic criteria (magnetic isotropic and anisotropic susceptibilities) are considered. Energetic criteria suggest that In(Si7) enjoy conspicuous stabilization. However, by magnetic susceptibility isotropic this system are among the least aromatic of the family: Within their isomer series, In(Si4) is the most aromatic using this criteria. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis method was performed for the investigation of the relative stability and the nature of the 8-9 bonds in 1H-indene and mono-sila-1H-indene compounds. The results explained that how the p character of natural atomic hybrid orbital on X8 and X9 (central bond) is increased by the substitution of the C8 and C9 by Si. Actually, the results suggested that in these compounds, the X8-X9 bond lengths are closely controlled by the p character of these hybrid orbitals and also by the nature of C-Si bonds. The magnitude of the molecular stabilization energy associated to delocalization from X8-X9 and to * X8-X9 bond orbital were also quantitatively determined. Molecular orbital (MO) analysis further reveal that all structure has three delocalized MOs and two delocalized MOs and therefore exhibit the aromaticity.

  • An infrared camera and laser common-path optical system is applied to DIRCM (directional infrared countermeasures), to increase boresighting accuracy and decrease weight. Thermal effects of a laser beam in a common-path optical system are analyzed and evaluated, to predict any degradation in image quality. A laser beam with high energy density is absorbed by and heats the optical components, and then the surface temperature of the optical components increases. The heated optical components of the common-path optical system decrease system transmittance, which can degrade image quality. For analysis, the assumed simulation condition is that the laser is incident for 10 seconds on the mirror (aluminum, silica glass, silicon) and lens (sapphire, zinc selenide, silicon, germanium) materials, and the surface temperature distribution of each material is calculated. The wavelength of the laser beam is $4{\mu}m$ and its output power is 3 W. According to the results of the calculations, the surface temperature of silica glass for the mirror material and sapphire for the lens material is higher than for other materials; the main reason for the temperature increase is the absorption coefficient and thermal conductivity of the material. Consequently, materials for the optical components with high thermal conductivity and low absorption coefficient can reduce the image-quality degradation due to laser-beam thermal effects in an infrared camera and laser common-path optical system.

  • The effects of modified atmosphere (MA) storage far fresh red pepper and red bell pepper fruits were investigated with storing in high and few density polyethylene films (HDPE, LDPE) with various NaCl contents(0 g, 15 g, 20 g, 25 g). During the storage of pepper fruits, the weight loss, color change, mold emergence, and firmness were evaluated. The weight loss of pepper fruits packaged in HDPE and LDPE without NaCl was 3∼5%, even though it was 6∼19% in pepper fruits packaged with NaCl. The lutes of mold emergence of red pepper and red bell pepper fruits were lowered to 20∼45% as stored in HDPE and LDPE with NaCl but those of fruits stored in films without NaCl were high as 55∼65%. The color and firmness of pepper fruits were not much changed in comparison with those of non-packaged fruits as stored in HDPE and LDPE with or without NaCl.
