  • The oxidation behavior of commercial pure titanium is investigated in the temperature range of $727^{\circ}C{\sim}950^{\circ}C$ in mixed gases. The weight change is measured by TGA during oxidation in mixed gases. The oxidation behavior indicated by weight gain or the growth of oxide layer is based on the linear rate law at high temperatures. The structure of the oxide scale formed during oxidation is analysed by optical microscopy, electron probe microanalyzer, scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction. Oxide scales have a $TiO_2$ structure, and are constituted with multi-layered or two layered porous external one and a dense internal one. Ti-O solid solution region is formed at the interface of metal and scale layer. The formation of oxide scale is influenced by the oxidation temperature, time, crystal structure and the condition of atmosphere.

  • In this study we have examined electroless chemical plating on the plasma grafted poly [ethylene terephathalate](PET) fabric in order to improve the interfacial adhesion between metal and fiber. The vapour phase of acrylic acid introduced on the PET surface and the graft polymerization was carried out by using cold plasma, resulting in the grafting yield of 0.8-1.3 wt%. The carboxyl group of the plasma grafted was identified by FT-IR-ATR spectra. The Interfacial adhesion was related to the carboxyl group. After electroless chemical plating of nickel, it showed that the more the carboxyl, the better the interfacial adhesion. Comparing to the untreated, the plasma grafted fabric showed fairly good interfacial adhesion(5B grade, ASTM D3359) . The shielding effect of electromagnetic wave showed 95dB. The shielding effect depends on the fabric structure, the surface structure, and the cross sectional shape of fibers. The dense fabric structure, the etched surface like a microcrater, and the trigonal cross sectional shape were prefered.

  • Cofinite graphs and cofinite groupoids are defined in a unified way extending the notion of cofinite group introduced by Hartley. These objects have in common an underlying structure of a directed graph endowed with a certain type of uniform structure, called a cofinite uniformity. Much of the theory of cofinite directed graphs turns out to be completely analogous to that of cofinite groups. For instance, the completion of a directed graph Γ with respect to a cofinite uniformity is a profinite directed graph and the cofinite structures on Γ determine and distinguish all the profinite directed graphs that contain Γ as a dense sub-directed graph. The completion of the underlying directed graph of a cofinite graph or cofinite groupoid is observed to often admit a natural structure of a profinite graph or profinite groupoid, respectively.

  • Nanocrystalline vanadium nitride (VN) coatings were deposited using asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtering to further understand the influence of the pulsed plasmas on the crystal structure, microstructure and mechanical properties. Properties of VN coatings were investigated with FE-SEM, XRD and nanoindentation. The results show that, with the increasing pulse frequency and decreasing duty cycle, the coating morphology changed from a porous columnar to a dense structure, with finer grains. Asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtered VN coatings showed higher hardness, elastic modulus and residual compressive stress than dc sputtered VN coatings. The results suggest that asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtering technique is very beneficial for the reactive sputtering deposition of VN coatings.

  • In this paper, a series of monotonic undrained shear tests were carried out on four kinds of sand-fine mixtures with various fines content. Two kinds of sands (Silica sand V3, V6) and fines (Iwakuni natural clay, Tottori silt) were mixed together in various proportions, while paying attention to the void ratio expressed in terms of sand structure $(F_c{\leq}F_{cth})$. The undrained shear strength of mixtures below the threshold fines content was observed so that as the plastic fines content increases, maximum deviator stress ratio decrease for dense samples while an increase is noted for loose samples. For non-plastic fines, the increase in the amount of fines leads to an increase in density of the soil, which results in an increase in strength. Then, the monotonic shear strength of the mixtures was estimated using the concept of granular void ratio. It was found that the shear strength of mixtures is greatly dependent on the skeleton structure of sand particles.

  • Fine structure of the cutaneous pigments in the black widow spider, Latrodectus mactans are studied with light and electron microscopes. The cutaneous pigments are only observed in epidermal layer just beneath the cuticle. These pigments are compactly distributed around the spinnerets which located at caudal area of the abdomen. According to the fine structural characteristics of the pigment granules, two main types of guanine pigment granules-carotenoid vesicles and reflecting platelets - are observed in the cytoplasm of the epidermal cells. Morphological features of these pigment granules are characterized as the electron dense carotenoid vesicles and the electron lucent reflecting platelets. Marginal electron density of the carotenoid vesicle is different from that of internal region, whereas the reflecting platelets have laminated crystalline granules. Typiral structures of these pigment granules are very similar to those of invertebrate's chromatophores, especially erythrophores and iridophores. Moreover differentiation of these pigment granules are also originated from the small vesicles of Golgi complexes similarly to those of cutaneous chromatophores.

  • In this study, we investigate the effect of porous $Al_2O_3$ substrate on the strengths of asymmetric structures after we prepare such a structure consisting of a dense $Li_2ZrO_3$ top layer and porous $Al_2O_3$ substrate layer. The porosity and elastic modulus of the substrate layer are controlled by sintering temperature, which has three values of 1150, 1250 and $1350^{\circ}C$. The porosity is controlled in the range of ~ 30-50 vol%, elastic modulus is ~80-120 GPa and elastic mismatch $E_s/E_c$ is ~ 0.6-1.0. Indentation stress-strain curves are obtained and analyzed to evaluate the yield stress of the asymmetric structure by concentrated local loading of WC balls. Conventional flexural strengths are also obtained to evaluate the strength of the asymmetric structure. The results indicate that the local yield strength of the asymmetric structure has mid-values between the top and the substrate layer; however, the flexural strength of the asymmetric structure are mainly influenced by elastic modulus and strength of the substrate.

  • The electrochromic characteristics of tungsten oxide films are largely affected by deposition conditions, such as substrate temperature and gas flow rate and also post-annealing. We have considered gas flow rate and temperature as important factors having an effect on an electrical, optical phenomenon and structural variation of $WO_3$ . The tungsten oxide films were deposited onto ITO(20$\Omega\box$, 1000$\AA$) using rf magnetron sputtering method. In particular, the films deposited at room temperature were annealed at various temperatures in air. All specimens had crystal structure except one being deposited at room temperature with nearly amorphous-like structure. The specimen deposited at $100^{\circ}C$ had a structure in which the increase in deposition temperature. The specimen deposited at $100^{\circ}C$ had a structure in which the cations$(Li^+)$ are easily movable because of void boundaries induced by regularly arrayed large grains. The specimen deposited at $300^{\circ}C$ had a dense structure with small grains but it exhibited the large mobility and charge density in $WO_3$ because of distinct grain boundaries.

  • NbN coatings were prepared by ICP (inductively coupled plasma) assisted magnetron sputtering from a Nb metal target in $Ar+N_2$ atmosphere at various ICP powers. Effect of ICP on the microstructure, crystalline structure and mechanical properties of NbN coatings was investigated by field emission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and nanoindentation measurements. The results show that ICP power has a significant influence on coating microstructure, structure and mechanical properties of NbN coatings. With the increasing of ICP power, coating microstructure evolves from the columnar structure of DC process to a highly dense one. Crystalline structure of NbN coatings were changed from cubic ${\delta}$-NbN to hexagonal ${\beta}-Nb_2N$ with increase of ICP power. The maximum nano hardness of 25.4 GPa with Ra roughness of 0.5 nm was obtained from the NbN coating sputtered at ICP power of 200 W.

  • This paper introduces an effective hybridization of the usual simplex method and an interior point method in the convergent framework of Dembo and Sahi. We formulate a specific and detailed algorithm (HYBRID) and report the results of some preliminary testing on small dense problems for its viability. By piercing through the feasible region, the newly developed hybrid algorithm avoids the combinatorial structure of linear programs, and several other interesting and important characteristics of this algorithm are also discussed.
