The diffusion barrier properties of TiN by using Cu(Mg) alloy film have been investigated. Cu(Mg) alloy film was deposited on air-exposed TiN film. Upon annealing, interfacial MgO of 100 $\AA$ has been formed due to the reaction of Mg with oxygen existed on the surface of TiN. Combined MgO/TiN structure prevented the interdiffusion of Cu and Si up to $800^{\circ}C$. To improve the adhesion of Cu(Mg) alloy film to the TiN, TiN layer was treated by $O_2$ plasma, followed by vacuum annealing at $300^{\circ}C$. It was found that increased oxygen on the surface of TiN film by plasma treatment enhanced segregation of Mg toward the interface, resulting in the formation of dense MgO layer. Improved adhesion characteristics have been formed through this treatment. However, increased power of $O_2$ plasma led to the formation of TiO$_2$ and decreased the Mg content to be segregated to the interface, resulting in the decrease in adhesion property. In addition, the deposition of 50 ${\AA}$ Si on the TiN enhanced the adhesion of Cu(Mg) alloy to TiN without deteriorating the TiN diffusion barrier characteristics.

Oxidation behaviour of TiAl intermetallic compounds with the addition of Cr, V, Si, Mo, or Nb was investigated at 900~$1100^{\circ}C$ under the atmospheric environment. The reaction products were examined by XRD, SEM equipped with WDX. The weight gain by continuous oxidation increased with the addition of Cr or V, but there was less weight gain when Mo, Si or Nb was added individually. he oxidation rate of Cr- or V-added TiAl was always larger than that of TiAI. However, oxidation rate of Si-, Mo- or Nb-added TiAl was almost same or smaller than that of TiAI. Thus, it is concluded that the addition of Cr or V did not improve the oxidation resistance, whereas the addition of Si, Mo or Nb improved the oxidation resistance. Oxides formed on TiAl with Mo, Si, and Nb were found to be more protective, resulting from the decrease in diffusion rate of the alloying elements and oxygen. Nb strengthened the tendency to form $AI_{2}O_{3}$ in the early stage of oxidation, due to the continuous $AI_{2}O_{3}$ layer formation and dense $Tio_{2}+AI_{2}O_{3}$ layer. According to the Pt-marker test of TiAI- 5wt%Nb, oxygen diffused mainly inward while oxides were formed on the substrate surface. Upon thermal cyclic oxidation at $900^{\circ}C$, it is shown that the addition of Cr or Nb improved the adherence of oxide scale to the substrate.
Reoperations following cardiac surgery have an increased risk of the danger of damaging the heart, great vessels or extracardiac grafts because of adhesions to the sternum. We experimentally evaluated 3 different methods for pericardial closure. A standardized procedure for induction of pericardial adhesions was carried out in 30 rabbits. For closure of pericardium, animals were divided into 3 groups, 10 animals respectively: Croup 1 [simple pericardial closure]The pericardium was primarily resuture; Group 2 [Core-Tex surgical membrane as a pericardial substitute]- A Gore-Tex surgical membrane was interposed between the sternum and the heart; and Group 3 [pericardial tension releasing technique]-Three longitudinal overlapping incisions were made on the right side of the pericardium while the midline incison was sutured. Animals were put to death 4 weeks postoperatively and the pericardial space was examined for pericardial adhesions and epicardial reactions. The extent of adhesions and reactions were graded as: I-none; II-minimal; III-moderate; and IV-severe. Histologic studies of the pericardium, the pericardial substitute and the epicardium were also performed. The results were as follows: 1. In group 1 [simple pericardial closure], the degree of pericardial adhesions were grade I in 1 animal, grade II in 2, grade III in 4 and grade IV in 3. Epicardial reactions were grade I in 1 animal, grade II in 3, grade III in 5 and grade IV in 1. Histologic examination revealed thick fibrous tissue that obliterated the pericardial space in 7 animals. 2. In group 2 [Gore-Tex surgical membrane as a pericardial substitute], the degree of pericardial adhesions were grade I in 3 animals, grade II in 3, grade III in 2 and grade IV in 2. The degree of epicardial reactions were grade II in 1 animal, grade III in 5 and grade IV in 4. Histologic studies revealed a thin layer of dense fibrous tissue which covered the Gore-Tex surgical membrane and thick loose fibrous tissue on the epicardium just beneath the substitute. 3. In group 3 [pericardial tension releasing technique], the degree of pericardial adhesions were grade I in 3 animals, grade II in 4, grade III in 2 and grade IV in 1. The degree of epicardial reactions were grade 1 in 4 animals, grade II in 4 and grade III in 2. Severe epicardial reactions were not observed in this group. Histologic examination showed normal epicardium in 4 animals and the epicardium of the other 6 animals only revealed very thin fibrous layer compared to group I and group II. Pericardial adhesions more than grade III were 70% in group 1, 40% in group 2 and 30% in group 3. Pericardial adhesions were reduced in group 2 and group 3 compared to group 1, but statistically not significant. Epicardial reactions more than grade III were 60% in group 1, 90% in group 2 and 20% in group 3. Epicardial reactions were significantly reduced in group 3 compared to group 2. Author`s modified pericardial releasing technique provides marked augment of pericardial surface area and facilitates tension-free pericardial closure. Furthermore, pericardial adhesion and epicardial reaction will be reduced with the pericardial tension releasing technique.

A remote telesounder system was manufactured to investigate the behavior and distribution characteristics of fish and was tested to verify its performance and effects int he set net fishing ground located off the Namhae island, Oct. 26~27, 1994. The activity pattern of fish was observed at the buoy station installed in a set net and it was also analyzed simultaneously at the remote base station on land located at distance of about 1.5km away from the buoy station. Several findings at both the buoy station and the base station were as follows: The images of color display monitor at the base station on land were very well coincident with the records observed at the buoy station. The lower part of slope net and bagnet fluctuated irregularly, and its variations were about 3.6m and 6.0m, respectively. In the daytime, the fish school entered playground, passed slope net with 5~7m depth, moved dispersedly at night and at twilight the entrance was rare. In the bagnet, in the daytime the fish school swam in the layer of 8m in depth, at night the fishes dispersed in the entire layer and at twilight they formed dense school. The fishes caught by the set net were about 500kg with 20 species. Anchovy was the most dominant species. In conclusion, the remote telesounder was a convenient and powerful system for investigating the distribution pattern and the swimming behavior of fish entering in set net.
The Electrochemical stabilities of the Brewer-Engel type intermetallic compounds of Co-Mo $(35 wt\%)$ and Ni-Mo$(35 wt\%)$ manufactured by the arc-melting method for the hydrogen electrode of $H_2-O_2$ alkaline fuel cell were investigated. Effects of temperature and concentration on the electrochemical behavior of the electrodes in the $80^{\circ}C$ 6 N KOH solution deaerated with $N_2$ gas were studied by electrochemical methods. The effect of overpotential on the electrochemical stabilities of Co-Mo and Ni-Mo intermetallic compounds was also discussed under the normal operation condition of AFC. It was shown that Co-Mo electrode had lower electrochemical stability as compared to Ni-Mo. In the case of Co-Mo electrode, a simultaneous dissolution of cobalt and molybdenum has occurred at low anodic overpotential form equilibrium hydrogen electrode potential, but the dissolution of cobalt was serious, and Co(OH)l layer on the electrode surface formed at the high anodic overpotential. In contrast the Ni-Mo electrode had high electrochemical stability because formation of the dense and thin protective $Ni(OH)_2$ layer prevented the dissolution of molybdenum.
This study investigated the internal and external morphological characteristics of decomposition and browning of oak sawdust medium for ground bed cultivation of Lentinula edodes. Within fifty days after L. edodes inoculation, surface hyphae on the bed browned. In 110 days, the fungal hyphae occupied and decomposed wood fibers, vessels and parenchymatous cells from the inside as white profuse hyphal mass was amorphously dissolving the saw dust particles from the outer surface. Most of the white hyphal bed surface became cleanly brown, however, some colony surface became blackened and slimy with contaminating bacteria, hyphae and spores. The brown layer was ca. 0.34 mm thick with highly dense and white hyphal mass beneath, whereas the blackened layer was ca. 1.17 mm thick with shrunken hyphae and less decomposed sawdust particles beneath. The surface hardness of the brown surface was ca. $0.73kgf/cm^2$, soft and resilient, while that of the blackened was ca. $0.91kgf/cm^2$, hard and nonresilient. By 150 days Lentinula edodes mushrooms fruited only on the brown surface and not on the blackened medium.
The purpose of this study w8s to evaluate the effects of pulsed electromagnetic energy(Diapulse) and microcurrent on the wound healing in rabbits. 15 domestic rabbits were randomly assigned to the PRME(n=5). MC(n=5) and CON(n=91 group. Each rabbits were anesthetized with lidocaine HCL $2\%$. Skin wounds were created laterally on the back of IS domestic rabbits(33cm). From 24 hours after being injured, the rabbits of the PEME group were irradiated with an intensity of 3 at a 300 pulses per second, which were applied for 15 minutes every day during the 12 days. The MC group were stimulated with an intensity of $50{\mu}A$ at frequency of40 pulses per second, which were applied for 15 minutes every day during the 12 days. The CON group were not stimulated. The rabbits were sacrificed and the incised wound pans were processed appropriately for the light microscopic examination on the 3rd day, 6th day and 12th day before the beginning of wound treatment. The areas of wound were measured with metric graph paper. The results were as tallows. 1 The PRME and MC group compared with control group showed that wound closure rate increased on 6th, 12th day. 2. It was found that the CON group did not show a complete maturation and had a chronic inflammatory response. Judging from the irregularity of intercellular space and the loose alignment of connective tissue. these findings showed that wound healing was delayed. 3. It showed that inflammatory cells. fibroblasts and epithelial cells activity rapidly processed in the PEME group compared with the CON group. It was found that the PEMI; group showed a advanced remodeling of epithelial layer and a positive repair of connective tissue. 4. It showed that fibroblasts, epithelial cells and inflammatory cells activity rapidly processed in the MC group compared with the CON group. It was found that the MC group showed a improved remodeling of epithelial layer and a dense connective tissue.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the hemp (Cannabis sativa cv. Chungsam) seed structure and ultrastructure of food reserves by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. We examined the seed coat and embryo consisting of a hypocotyl-radicle axis and two cotyledons. The seed coat consisted of exotesta and endotesta. The exotesta was a mechanical layer with lignified and elongated cells, while endotesta of the underlying layers of the exotesta was consisted of two separated cell layers. The collapsed outer layer of endotesta showed the unique reticulate structures. In cotyledon cells, protein and lipid bodies occupied most of cytoplasm. Protein bodies varied in diameter from 1.8 to $5.0{\mu}m$ and possessed a protein matrix containing electron-dense globoid crystals. Numerous lipid bodies ranged from 0.8 to $3.0{\mu}m$ in diameter were distributed around the protein bodies. During the early stages of breakdown, protein bodies rapidly changed their shape into the granular feature, however, lipid bodies were gradually degradated and fused each other. The degeneration process of protein bodies and lipid bodies of cotyledon cells might be correlated with the reports which hemp seeds rapidly lose their ability to germinate.
The relationship between the catch of squid, Todarodes pacificus, according to the jigging depth and underwater illumination by fishing lamps was investigated during nighttime operations off-Tusima Islands in November 1994 and off-Oki Islands in November 1995. We used echo sounder to observe the distribution of squid. Echo images on the echo sounder showed the distribution of squid at the water layer of 50 meter depth at the beginning of jigging operation. After the time elapsed, a continuous dense image had moved to the layer of 60-80 meters jigging depth. A larger number of squid were caught by jigging machines set at a lowest depth of 90 meters, when it compared with machines set at a 60 meters. However, Catch increased around 60 meters jigging depth, when fishing lamps output were switched to 24 kW halogen lights:.The underwater illumination, under the each light power of fishing lamps of squid jigging boat was continuously measured with an underwater illuminometer. Values of the underwater illumination, when schools were distributed from 60 to 80 meters, ranged from $3.0\times10^{-2}lx\;to\;3.4\times10^{-3}lx$ in average at $80\~360$ kW fishing lamps output of squid jigging boat.
This study was performed to assess the efficacy of high voltage pulsed galvanic current for the healing of wounds in rabbits. Skin wounds were created laterally on the flank of 12 domestic rabbits($3{\times}3cm$). The wounds of each group were treated with an intensity of 170 V at a frequency of 70 pulses per second, which was applied for 30 minutes a day for 10 days. The experimental groups were randomly assigned to either EXP I (n=3), EXP II(n=3), EXP III(n=3) or control(n=3). Each group was stimulated under the following conditions : 1) EXP I (Negative polarity), 2) EXP II (Change in polarity, negative electrode stimulation during the first 3 days and then positive electrode stimulation from 4 to 10 days), 3) EXP III(Positive polarity), 4) control(No stimulation). An active electrode was placed over the wound and a dispersive electrode on the buttock. The rate of wound closure was compared with the original wound size, evaluated by a tracing film in each measurement period. Finally, on the wound in each group, skin tissue was excised for histological evaluation after treatment for 10 days. The results obtained are as follows : 1) It was found that the control group did not show a complete remodeling of epitherial layer and had a chronic inflammatory response. Judging from the irregularity of intercellular space and the loose alignment of connective tissue, these findings show that wound healing was delayed. 2) EXP I showed a significant bactericidal effect, but a moderate response of vasodilation. The rate of wound closure was slower when compared with EXP II, III. 3) EXP II showed a complete remodeling of epitherial layer and a positive repair of connective tissue. Its rate of wound closure was best when compared with the others. 4) EXP III had a slower rate of wound closure than EXP II, but judging from the greater proliferation of collagen fibers and the dense alignment of connective tissue, this positive electrode was very effective in the formation of neo - connective tissue.
