  • A fundamental study in cooling and solidification process focused on ice storage was performed, including the interesting phenomena of density inversion, supercooling and dendritic ice. A numerical study was performed for natural convection and ice formation in the cooling and freezing processes with supercooling in a space between double cylinders. When water was cooled under the freezing point by a cooling wall in a cavity, solidification was not started at once, but a subcooled region was formed near the wall. Especially, when the cooling rate was low, subcooled region extended to a wide area. However, after a few minutes, supercooling is released by some triggers. Dendritic ice is suddenly formed within a subcooled region, and a dense ice layer begins to be developed from the cooling wall. Due to the difficulties, most previous studies on solidification process with numerical methods had not treated the supercooling phenomena, i.e. the case considering only the growth of dense ice. In this study, natural convection and ice formation considering existence of supercooling and dendritic ice were analyzed numerically with using finite difference method and boundary fixing method. The results of numerical analysis were well compared with the experimental results.

  • In this study, which focuses on ice storage, a fundamental study in cooling and solidification was performed, including the interesting phenomena of density inversion, supercooling and dendritic ice. A numerical study was performed for natural convection and ice formation considering existence of subcooling and dendritic ice were analyzed numerically by using finite difference method and boundary fixing method. In the mesh, the solid fraction was introduced with adding as a term to the energy conservation equation. A flow in the dendrite was modelled as a flow in a porous medium, and the momentum conservation equation was modified to incorporate resistance forces involved in flows through porous media. A numerical solution of the time dependencies of dendrite area and dense ice front was successfully obtained, and the numerical results were good agreement with experimental results. Based on this methodology, a discussion was made of phenomena and characteristics of cooling and freezing processes under various conditions.

  • Melting characteristics of unrestrained liquid ice in a rectangular vessel with heated top wall were investigated experimentally. The liquid ice, a mixture of ice particles and ethylene-glycol aqueous solution, was adopted as a testing material. During the melting process the liquid ice was drawn by buoyancy to the heated top wall of the rectangular vessel where close-contact melting occured. The melting behavior and melting rate of the liquid ice as well as local/mean heat-transfer coefficient at the heated top wall were observed and measured under a variety of conditions of heat flux and various initial concentration of the aqueous binary solution. It was found that the heat transfer of the heated top wall is remarkably promoted by the close-contact melting, and that the dendritic frozen layer at the lower interface of the liquid ice is formed. Photographic evidence demonstrated that plumes containing solute-rich liquid issued from isolated chimneys within the liquid ice layer where segregation of interstitial channel took place.

  • Experimental study was performed for free convection and ice formation around two horizontal circular tubes which were placed vertically. Temperature and velocity distributions were visualized with real time holographic interferometry technique and tracer method. When water was cooled, super cooled region was formed around cooling pipe. It was found that flow induced by free convection always directed downwards when the coolant temperature was low, while it directed upwards when the coolant temperature was comparably high though it directed downwards initially. Flow phenomena with free convection were investigated in detail with varying cooling rate and length between cooling pipes. And growing process of dense ice was also investigated. Dendritic ice is suddenly formed within a supercooled region, and a dense ice layer begins to develop from the cooling wall.

  • Ice formation in a horizontal circular cylinder has been studied numerically. From the numerical analysis results, it was found that there were three types of freezing pattern and that freezing phenomenon was affected largely by density inversion and cooling rate. The type of freezing pattern largely depends on the secondary flow which is generated by density inversion. When supercooling energy is released before the development of the secondary flow, the annular ice layer grows. If the energy is released when the secondary flow is considerably developed and the supercooled region is removed to the upper half part of the cylinder, an asymmetric ice layer grows. And if the energy is released after perfect development of the secondary flow, instantaneous dendritic ice formation over the full region occurs. Furthermore, this secondary flow was found to have an effect on heat transfer characteristics. The heat transfer rate becomes small at the instant when the secondary flow is generated, but becomes large with the development of the flow. It's concluded that for the facilitation of heat transfer it is desirable to keep water in liquid phase until the secondary flow is perfectly developed. This study gave an instruction of performance improvement of capsule type ice storage tank.

  • An unusual long-period and heavy snowfall occurred in the Yeongdong region from 6 to 14 February 2014. This event produced snowfall total of 194.8 cm and the recordbreaking 9-day snowfall duration in the 103-year local record at Gangneung. In this study, satellite-derived cloud-top brightness temperatures from the infrared channel in the atmospheric window ($10{\mu}m{\sim}11{\mu}m$) are examined to find out the characteristics of clouds related with this heavy snowfall event. The analysis results reveal that a majority of precipitation is related with the low-level stratiform clouds whose cloud-top brightness temperatures are distributed from -15 to $-20^{\circ}C$ and their standard deviations over the analysis domain (${\sim}1,000km^2$, 37 satellite pixels) are less than $2^{\circ}C$. It is also found that in the above temperature range precipitation intensity tends to increase with colder temperature. When the temperatures are warmer than $-15^{\circ}C$, there is no precipitation or light precipitation. Furthermore this relation is confirmed from the examination of some other heavy snowfall events and light precipitation events which are related with the low-level stratiform clouds. This precipitation-brightness temperature relation may be explained by the combined effect of ice crystal growth processes: the maximum in dendritic ice-crystal growth occurs at about $-15^{\circ}C$ and the activation of ice nuclei begins below temperatures from approximately -7 to $-16^{\circ}C$, depending on the composition of the ice nuclei.

  • In order to fabricate porous mullite ceramics with controlled pore structure and improved mechanical strength, a freeze casting route has been processed using camphene mixed with tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) and coal fly ash/alumina as the solvent and the ceramic material, respectively. After sintering, the solidification characteristics of camphene and TBA solvent were evident in the pore morphology, i.e., dendritic and straight pore channels formed along the solidification directions of camphene and TBA ice, respectively, after sublimation. Also, the presence of microcracks was observed in the bodies sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$, mainly due to the difference in solidification volume change between camphene and TBA. The compressive strength of the sintered bodies was found generally to be dependent, in an inverse manner, on the porosity, which was mainly determined by the processing conditions. After sintering at $1300{\sim}1500^{\circ}C$ with 30~50 wt% solid loading, the resulting mullite ceramics showed porosity and compressive strength values in ranges of 83.8~43.1% and 3.7~206.8 MPa, respectively.

  • The calcium-binding proteins (CaBP), parvalbumin (PV) and calbindin-D 28K (calbindin) are particularly abundant and specific in their distribution, and present in different subsets of neurons in many brain regions. Although their physiological roles in the neurons have not been elucidated, they are valuable markers of neuronal subpopulations for anatomical and developmental studies. This study is designed to characterize dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) neurons and axon terminals in terms of differential expression of immunoreactivity (IR) for two well-known CaBPs, PV and calbindin. The experiments were carried out on 6 adult monkeys. Monkeys were perfused under deep Nembutal anesthesia with 2% paraformaldehyde and 0.2% glutaraldehyde in 0.1M phosphate buffer. After removal, the brains were postfixed for 6-8 hr in 2% paraformaldehyde at $4^{\circ}C$ and infiltrated with 30% sucrose at $4^{\circ}C$. Thereafter, they were frozen in dry ice. Serial sections of the thalamus, at $20{\mu}m$, were made in the frontal plane with a sliding microtome. The sections were stained for PV and calbindin with indirect immunocytochemical methods. For electron microscopy, after infiltration with 30% sucrose the blocks of thalamus were serially sectioned at $50{\mu}m$ with a Vibratome in the coronal plane and stained immediately by indirect ABC methods without Triton X-100 in incubation medium. Stained sections were postfixed in 0.2% osmium tetroxide, dehydrated and flat-embedded in Spurr resin. The block was then trimmed to contain only a selected lamina or interlaminar space. The dLGN proper showed strong PV IR in fibers in all laminae and interlaminar zones. Particularly dense staining was noted in layers 1 and 2 that contain many stained fibers from optic tract. Neuronal cell body stained with PV was concentrated only in the laminae. In these laminae staining was moderate in cell bodies of all large and medium-sized neurons, and was strong in cell bodies of some small neurons together with their processes. Calbindin IR was marked in the neuronal cell body and neuropil in the S layers and interlaminar zones whereas moderate in the neuropil throughout the nucleus. Regional difference in distribution of PV and calbindin IR cell is distinct; the former is only in the laminae and the latter in both the S layer and interlaminar space. The CaBP-IR elements were confined to about $10{\mu}m$ in depth of Vibratome section. The IR product for CaBP was mainly associated with synaptic vesicle, pre- and post-synaptic membrane, and outer mitochondrial membrane and along microtubule. PV-IR was noted in various neuronal elements such as neuronal soma, dendrite, RLP, F, PSD and some myelinated or unmyelinated axons, and was not seen in the RSD and glial cells. Only a few neuronal components in dLGN was IR for calbindin and its reaction product was less dense than that of PV, and scattered throughout cytoplasm of soma of some relay neurons, and was also persent in some dendrite, myelinated axons and RLP. The RSD, F, PSD and glial elements were always non-IR for calbindin. Calbindin labelled RLP were presynaptic to unlabeled dendrite or dendritic spine and PSD. Calbindin-labeled dendrite of various sizes were always postsynaptic to unlabeled RSD, RLP or F. From this study it is suggested that dLGN cells of different functional systems and their differential projection to the visual cortex can be distinguished by differential expression of PV and calbindin.
