  • To investigate inclusions(oxides) which cause some trouble in the quality of the metal and a steel-making process, samples were manufactured. The molten irons were deoxidized using Al deoxidizer, and the morphology of the deoxidation products and the process of deoxidation were investigated by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDS). The reactions between Fe melt and Al deoxidizer formed deoxidation product, and those reaction may accelerates the reduction of oxide in Fe melt. According to the results of SEM analysis after deoxidizing treatment, it was found that deoxidation products had spherical cluster shape when 1% Al was added and dendritic shape with $2{\sim}3%$ A1 addition. The deoxidation products were globular, dendritic, polygonal(square) and cluster shape.

  • Background: B cell-activating factor belonging to the TNF family (BAFF) is primarily expressed by macrophages and dendritic cells, and stimulates B cell proliferation, differentiation, survival, and Ig production. In the present study, we explored the effect of activin A on BAFF expression by APCs. Methods: To investigate the effect of activin A on BAFF expression by mouse APCs, we measured the level of BAFF expression at the transcriptional and protein levels using RT-PCR and ELISA. Results: Activin A markedly enhanced BAFF expression in mouse macrophages and dendritic cells at both the transcriptional and protein levels. SB431542, an activin receptor-like kinase 4 (ALK4) inhibitor, completely abrogated activin A-induced BAFF transcription. Furthermore, overexpression of DN-Smad3 abolished activin-induced BAFF expression at the transcriptional and protein levels. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that activin A can enhance BAFF expression through ALK4-Smad3 pathway.

  • Carbosilane dendrimers with silafluorenyl groups on the periphery were prepared by the reaction of 2,2'- dilithiumbiphenyl and dichlorosilyl groups on the carbosilane dendrimers at low temperature. The 1st to 4th generation of dendrimers with silafluorenyl groups were obtained with high yields and the products were purified by column chromatography. The unified properties of the dendrimers were measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and displayed very low and regular polydispersity index (PDI) value. The silafluorenyl moieties on dendritic periphery accepted the potassium fluoride ions which were stabilized by criptand [222], and it proved strong photoluminescent properties.

  • Hypocrellin A has gained much attention in recent years due to its light-induced antitumor, antifungal and antiviral activities. Here we report that hypocrellin A exerts immunomodulatory effects on MHC-restricted presentation of antigen. Hypocrellin A inhibited class II-MHC restricted presentation of exogenous antigen, but not class I MHC-restricted presentation of exogenous antigen, in dendritic cells. Hypocrellin A also inhibited the cytosolic pathway of endogenous antigen presentation. However, hypocrellin A did not inhibit the expression of class I and class II MHC molecules on dendritic cells (DCs), the phagocytic activity of DCs, or the $H-2K^b$-restricted presentation of a synthetic peptide, SIINFEKL. These results show that hypocrellin A differentially modulates the MHC-restricted antigen presentation pathways.

  • I. Objectives It is reported that there are complements and immunogloblins in serum from dental pulp in dentinal tubules, and it is thought that dental caries bacteria is opsonized by these serum ingredients, and it is presented by dendritic cells(DCs) in dental pulp. So, we examined whether a maturational difference of DCs occured when S. mutans was opsonized. II. Materials and Methods PBMC was divided from normal human peripheral blood and collected CD14 positive cells by magnetic beads system. Adherent cells were incubated in 5% FCS-RPMI medium included GM-CSF, IL-4 for seven days.(omitted)

  • As a potent antigen presenting cells and a powerful inducer of antigen specific immunity including cytotoxic T cell activity, dendritic cells(DCs) are being considered as a promising anti-tumor therapeutic module. Unlike solid tumors, leukemia is the hematologic malignancy involving immune effector cells. The expected usage of DCs in leukemia is the treatment of minimal residual disease(MRD) after the remission or stem cell transplantation. In this study, syngeneic leukemia cells were inoculated intra-venously into the mouse (WEHI-3 into the Balb/c), and the autologous tumor cell lysate pulsed DCs were injected as a therapeutic module twice in two weeks. • Previously, we showed that cyclosporin A and tacrolimus, but not rapamycin, inhibit MHC class I-restricted presentation of exogenous antigen in dendritic cells (DCs). We further characterized the effects of cyclosporin A and tacrolimus on the uptake, processing and cross-presentation of a model antigen, ovalbumin (OVA), in DCs. Treatment of DCs with cyclosporin A or tacrolimus did not inhibit phagocytic activity of DCs. Instead, treatment of DCs with cyclosporin A or tacrolimus inhibited the expression of $H-2K^b$/ molecules complexed with the OVA peptied, SIINFEKL, specifically. (omitted)

  • Dendritic cells (DCs) are known to professional antigen presenting cell (APC). Due to the role as an effective activator of cytotoxic T Lymphocytes by expressing MHC, adhesion and co-stimulatory molecules, DCs are now widely recognized to play an important role in the immune responses to tumors. We investigated the effect of cultured DCs in murine melanoma pulmonary metastasis model. To follow the metastasis protocol, syngenic melanoma cells were inoculated intra-venously into the mouse (B16F10 into the C57BL/6)8 days prior to the first DC injection (1$\times$106 DCs/ mouse, i.p.) and the autologous tumor cell lysate pulsed-DCs were injected as a therapeutic module twice in two weeks.
