  • Dealing with uncertainty has been a critical issue in demographic and population forecasting since 1980. This study reviews methodological developments in demographic and population forecasting over the last several decades. First, this study reviews the important issue of the uncertainty surrounding demographic forecasts. Several limitations of the traditional scenario approach to dealing with uncertainty are also discussed. Second, in forecasting demographic processes such as mortality, fertility, and migration, three approaches of stochastic forecasting are identified and discussed: expert judgment, statistical modeling, and analysis of historical forecast errors. Finally, this study discusses the current issues and directions for future research in stochastic demographic forecasting.

Second, a factor correlation analysis was done. Results - Hypothesis 1, which stated that, "retirees with low educational background often start a self-employed business," was significant. Hypothesis 2, which stated that, "retirees in metropolitan areas frequently start a self-employed business," was significant. Hypothesis 3, which stated that, "retirees in a megalopolis frequently start a self-employed business," was significant. Conclusions - A preliminary startup education was needed to lessen the losses. Retirees should have preliminary knowledge of actual self-employment conditions to be given a startup education.

  • Japan is now facing an aging society with fewer children. According to the demographic change in Japan, its economic effect on the economic growth has gained public attention. This paper focuses on the effect of the demographic change on economic growth in Japan, too. The first part illustrates the process of demographic transition in Japan. Thanks to successful Meiji Revitalizing Reform, Japan had experienced demographic transition earlier than the other East Asia countries. The second part of this paper describes relations between demographic factors and economic growth theoretically. In addition, it analyzes demographic effects on economic growth empirically using time series data of Japan from 1952 to 2005. It is the main finding of analyses that there are positive relations between demographic factor, including employment population rate, population rate and TFR, and economic growth. Therefore, in the near future, a decreasing labor force will cause economic stagnation in Japan. To overcome this problems, it is required to make various policies.

  • This study aims to examine curvilinearly moderating effects of task interdependence on the relationship between demographic faultlines and group performance. It posits that the degree of task interdependence has an impact on the effects of demographic faultlines. It was conducted in six organizations in Korea, their industries including heavy industries, hospital, construction, petrochemical, fine chemicals, and system integration. The survey was distributed to 1330 individuals in 162 teams and 1082 individuals in 137 teams responded to the questionnaire. To test the hypotheses including nonlinear interactions, we conducted a hierarchical regression analysis to the survey data from 82 groups within six firms in Korea. The results show that for groups that experience a high level of task interdependence, the slope for the regression of demographic faultlines on group performance is comparatively low and, at the low level of task interdependence, insignificant. However, at intermediate levels of task interdependence, the association was strongly negative and significant. This study finds that the negative relationship between demographic faultlines and group performance is stronger when task interdependence is moderate than when task interdependence is high or low. Therefore, managers should pay attention to optimal group design by carefully assigning tasks in diverse and divided groups.
