  • Recently, aerospace structures have lightweight trend in order to reduce the cost of fuel and system, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) can give the ability to reduce weight at 20~50% as the substitution of metal alloy, and there are advantages such as high Non-rigid, specific strength and anti-corrosion, but it is difficult to prove its destruction properties due to heterogeneous structure and anisotropy. In this study we designed specimen, inducing distinguishing destructions of material (for example, matrix crack, fiber breakage, and delamination) by using the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) which is used in a real aircraft, to apply acoustic emission technique to aerospace structures. And we gained data via tensile testing and acoustic emission technique, from which each fault signal was classified respectively by using AE parameters and waveform.

  • Transferring of functional nanofilms onto target substrates is a cornerstone to developing nanofilm-based nextgeneration applications. In this work, we provide a brief review of recent advances on nanofilm transfer methods by categorizing them into the following three methods: wet-etching transfer, electrochemical delamination, and mechanical transfer. Furthermore, the mechanical transfer method, which is regarded as a promising technology owing to its facile, substrate recyclable, and widely applicable process, is overviewed by focusing on fracture mechanics approaches. Finally, the perspectives and challenges for future development of the mechanical transfer method are discussed.

  • In this study, bulk nano-crystalline $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and their mechanical properties, in particular wear, were investigated. A wide range of grain sizes, from 80 nm and 250 nm were obtained by varying sintering conditions ($1550^{\circ}C$-5 min to $1650^{\circ}C$-20 min). The elastic modulus of obtained ceramics was ${\sim}250$ GPa and hardness was in the range of $13{\sim}14$ GPa. The indentation fracture toughness increased from $2.58MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ to $3.24MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ with increasing sintering temperature possibly due to the elongated grains. Sliding wear tests revealed at least an order magnitude improvement in wear resistance with grain refinement. Microstructure analysis indicated that nano-$Si_3N_4$ specimens worn mainly through delamination and microcracking, while that of coarser specimens revealed severe wear with grain debonding and fracture.

  • Fretting of fuel rod cladding material, Zircaloy-4 Tube, in PWR nuclear power plants must be reduced and avoided. Nowadays the introduction of surface treatments or coatings is expected to bean ideal solution to fretting damage since fretting is closely related to wear, corrosion and fatigue. Therefore, in this study the fretting wear experiment was peformed using TiAIN coated Zircaloy-4 tube as the fuel rod cladding and uncoated Zircaioy-4 tube as one of grids, especially concentrating on the sliding component. Fretting wear resistance of TiAIN coated Zircaloy-4 tubes was improved compared with that of TiN coated tubes and uncoated tubes and the fretting wear mechanisms were delamination and plastic flow following by brittle fracture at lower slip amplitude but severe oxidation and spallation of oxidative layer at higher slip amplitude.

  • The tensile tests for [0/90]s, [90/0]s, and $[0/{\pm}45/90]s$ laminate composite were accomplished with acoustic sensor and failure processes were recorded by a video camera in real time. Also SEM examinations for fracture and side surface were carried out. The purpose of study is estimation of the failure mechanism and the mechanical properties effected by lay-up orientation for CFRP laminate composite with the hole notch. From the results, mechanical properties were obtained and they are similar between two kinds of cross-ply orientation in CFRP laminate composites, but not on $[0/{\pm}45/90]s$. And accordings to increasing the load, accumulate AE count was increased, regardless of lay-up orientation. Futhermore, failure mechanism was described by a video monitoring and SEM.

  • A study is made on the characterization of damage tolerance by spherical indentation in hardly coated layer structure with modest elastic modulus mismatch. A hard silicon nitride is prepared for the coating material and silicon nitride with 5wt% of boron nitride composites for underlayer. Hot pressing to eliminate the effect of interface delamination during the fracture makes strong interfacial bonding. The elastic modulus mismatch between the layers is not only large enough to suppress the surface crack initiation from the coating layer but sufficiently small to prevent the initiation of radial crack from the interface. The strength degradation of the layer structure after sphere contact indentation does not significantly occur, while the degradation of silicon nitride-boron nitride composite is critical at a high load and high number of contacts.

  • Standard finite element wave propagation codes are useful for determining stresses caused by the impact of one body with another; however, their applicability to a laminated system such as architectural laminated glass is limited because the important interlayer delamination process caused by impact loading is difficult to model. This paper presents a method that allows traditional wave propagation codes to model the interlayer debonding of laminated architectural glass subject to low velocity, small missile impact such as that which occurs in severe windstorms. The method can be extended to any multilayered medium with adhesive bonding between the layers. Computational results of concern to architectural glazing designers are presented.

  • Tape casting and lamination were used to produce heterogeneous laminates with alternating layers of different porosity and homogeneous laminates with component layers of the same porosity. The pore structure was investigated for heterogeneous laminates, and bend strength was measured for comparison with that of homogeneous laminates. For a reference, strength measurement was made for the porous body fabricated by sintering samples dry-pressed at low pressure with spray-dried granules. Strength increase, in the range 50~120 MPa, was achieved in the presence of the surface dense layer, while extensive delamination, presumably responsible for enhanced fracture toughness, took place through the internal porous layer.

  • In this research, to develope the A1 7075/CFRP multilayered hybrid composites, CRALL(Carbon Reinforced aluminum lamiate) specimens were processed by autoclavecuring system that curing temperature, time, surface pretreatment condition of aluminum were constant. Andthe fatigye life and failure mechanism on CFRP volume fraction and fiber orientation of CRALLspecimens were investigated. A fatigue life was greatly influenced by effect of CFRP fiber volume fraction but it was less effected than those of fiber orientation. The fatigue failure arised from interface delamination of CFRP and aluminum sheet after shear fracture of aluminum layer. The failure mechanism is assumed that the aluminum laminates which divide the CFRP into many thim layers tend to arrest the failure propagation.

  • In this paper, an experimental study on the effects of the impact damage and the perforation characteristic of CFRP laminates with different fiber stacking orientation and ply number was done through an observation of interrelations between the impact energy vs. transmitted energy and the impact energy vs. absorbed energy per unit volume. The velocities of the ball before or after impact are measured by the high-speed camera. And when CFRP laminates are subjected to tranverse impact by a steel ball(${\phi}10$), the delamination shapes generated by impact damage are observed by using SAM (Scanning acoustic Microscope).
