The Effects of Multiple Recycling on Deinkability and Properties of Recycled Paper

  • This study examined the effects of multiple recycling on deinkability and properties of recycled paper from laser computer printout (LCPO). First, alkaline paper with a 20% printed area was disintegrated by TAPPI standard disintegrator at room temperature. After dewatering, the pulp was flotated and dried in oven at80$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs. A sequence of wetting, disintegrating, flotating and drying was one recycling cycle and this cyclic treatment was repeated from zero to five times. The recycled handsheet dropped to 90% of the original brightness after five cycles, and lost the most brightness after five cycles, and lost the most brightness in the first two cycles. However, it had a gain of 10% in opacity after five cycles as the same as the case of nonprinting. And, in this study, the method for determining residual ink(toner) content in recycled handsheets ere established by means of SEM-EDX and Py-GC. The change of residual ink percentage on recycled paper showed the effect of recycling numbers on deinkability of waste paper. A slight decrease in deinkability was noted for the recycled handsheets, which may be due to the change of fiber surface free energy connected with fiber swelling.

  • This study examined the effects of recycling on chemical pulp fibers from multiple recycles. Firstly, water-pretreated alkaline photocopy paper was disintegrated by TAPPI standard disintegrator at room temperature. After dewatering, this pulp was dried in oven at $80^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. A sequence of wetting, disintegrating and drying was one recycling cycle and this cyclic treatment was repeated from zero to five times. The recycled handsheet dropped to 90% of the original brightness after five cycles, and lost the most brightness in the first two cycles. However, it had a gain of 10% in opacity after five cycles. And, in this study, the method for determining residual ink(toner) content in recycled handsheets were estabilished by means of SEM-EDX and atomic absorptive photometer. The change of residual ink percentage on recycled paper showed the effect of recycling numbers on deinkability of waste paper.   • This study examined the effects of multiple recycling on deinkability and properties of recycled paper from laser computer printout(LCPO). A sequence of printing , disintegrating, flotating , handsheet making and drying was one recycling cycle and this cyclic treatment was repeateed from zero to five times. The residual ink content in recycled handsheets by SEM-EDXA and Py-GC analyseswas increased slightly as recycling number increase. After five cycles of recycling the ISO brightness of recycled handsheets dropped to about 90% of the original brightness. However, it had a gain of 10% in opacity. The most of physical properties of recycled handsheets were decreased as recycling numbers increase except of for tear strength.

  • To investigate the deinkability according to the ink composition, deinking chemicals and aging time, newspaper was printed with different solvent types: 30% soy-based oil ink(A), 50% soy-based oil ink(B), 45% mineral oil ink(C) and 42% linseed oil ink(D). The newspapers were aged naturally for 15, 30, 90, 180 days, and were deinked with various deinking chemicals. The brightness of the deinked pulp of newspaper was affected by the ink composition, aging time and deinking chemicals, i.e., it was decreased with increasing aging time in the order of C, A, B and D. And the brightness also decreased in the order of lipase, cellulase and conventional chemical. The deinking yield showed the same tendency as the brightness variation at a given brightness. The strength of the deinked pulps increased until 30 days, but decreased or maintained after that time. And the strength decreased in the order of C, D, B and A, and also decreased in the order of lipase, conventional chemicals and cellulase.

  • In this paper, to investigate the deinkability of domestic and Australian old newsprint according to aging time, two types of newsprint printed with commercial offset ink in domestic(K; Korean newsprint, C; Canadian newsprint), Japanase(J) and Australian(A) old newsprint were aged naturally for 10, 30, 90, 180 days, and then yield, brightness, fiber length, and physical properties (tensile index, tear index, burst index) were evaluated according to aging time. As the aging time increased, the yield and brightness of respective samples decreased. The brightness and yield were decreased in the order of A, K, J and C. The brightness and strength of newsprint varied according to the ink formulation and kinds of pulp and wood. The decreasing order of strength is subsequently J, K, C and A.

Increase of the Mixing Ratio of KONP in Producing Newsprint (신문용지 생산에 있어서 국내 신문고지 혼입량 증대에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate the deinkability of Korean old newspaper(KONP) and the properties of newsprint made from deinked pulp with some addition of virgin pulp. When the samples of composed of 50% Australian old magazine(AuOMG) and 50% KONP were compared with the samples 50% AuOMG and 50% AuONP, the yield, opacity, strength properties of the former were high, but its brightness was low. When the mixing ratio of AuOMG : AuONP : KONP was 30:20:50, the brightness and strength properties were obtained the similar or better than those obtained samples having other mixing ratio. The brightness and opacity of samples made from deinked pulp with the some addition of TMP and BKP can meet the minium qualifications of brightness and opacity specified by Japanese Industrial Standard. The samples, which DIP, TMP, and KP were mixed with the ratio of the 85:10:5 and 90:5:5, maintained higher brightness and strength comparing to the samples containing higher amount of virgin pulp. Since the newsprint samples made from KONP was not inferior to those from imported old newspaper, the more use of KONP in producing newsprint is recommended.

  • Recovered paper has been widely used as a main raw material of papermaking in Korea. Recycling of recovered paper helps to reduce production cost and preserve an environment. To recycle recovered paper efficiently, de-inking is a key process in recycling mills. De-inking process would be affected by various influencing factors such as the type of de-inking agent, mixed ratio of recovered paper, season, and process conditions. In this study, fatty acid and nonionic surfactant were used as the de-inking agent in froth-flotation process of mixed recovered paper. De-inking properties of mixed recovered paper were investigated according to the addition level of each chemical. Nonionic surfactant had a small effect on de-inking efficiency of mixed recovered paper due to decreased reject. As the additional level of fatty acid increases, fragmented ink particles increased and then optical properties of recycled paper decreased because fragmented ink particles adsorbed onto the fiber surface.

The Effect of Offset Ink Formulation on Deinking of Old Newspaper (옵셋잉크 조성분이 신문고지 탈묵에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, to investigate the effect of the offset ink formulation on deinking of Korean old newspaper, the samples printed with five different types of offset ink were aged naturally for 10, 30, 90, 180 days, and then yield, brightness, fiber length, physical properties(tensile, tear, burst index) were evaluated according to aging time. As the aging time increased, the yield and brightness of respective samples decreased. Particially, as the addition amounts of linseed oil increased, those of samples decreased. Therefore, linseed oil is thought to reduce the deinkability of ink. Also, containing rosin-modified phenolic resin and gilsonite seem to reduce brightness of samples according aging time. In physical properties, tensile index and burst index were roughly decreased, but tear index was increased according to aging time. However, the three indexes of the sample containing only linseed oil as the vehicle component were considerably reduced in comparison with those of other samples, as once crosslinked a strong bond between the ink and fibers was produced and made it difficult to defibrate in producing sheets.
