  • In this paper, the defrosting characteristics of a PTC heating sheet is investigated by means of a defrosting heat source for the fin-tube heat exchanger in a refrigerator The defrosting characteristics of the PTC heating sheet are examined and compared with those of a conventional electric heater experimentally. It is found that the characteristics of the water draining rate with the defrosting time show a smoothly oscillating pattern when the PTC heating sheet Is used, and the drained water is completely melted. The defrosting efficiency of the PTC heating sheet is found to be about 75%, which is about 25% higher than that of the electric heater. Also, the reduction of the defrosting time and the increment of the defrosting efficiency may be obtained by improving the arrangement of the heating elements of the healing sheet. It is shown that the defrosting time of the PTC heating sheet increases linearly with the amount of frost, whereas the defrosting efficiency is nearly constant. When applying the PTC heating sheet to the refrigerating system, one should notice the fact that the defrosting performance of the PTC heating sheet may be degraded due to the repetitive operations.

  • The effect of various conditions of frosting and defrosting on the defrosting behavior of a fin-tube heat exchanger has been examined experimentally. An electric heater is used for defrosting in a fin-tube heat exchanger. There are several local maxima in the water draining rate. The amount of residual water on the heat exchanger after completion of defrosting is kept constant due to surface tension on the heat exchanger. Without considering degradation of the thermal performance due to the frosting, the defrosting efficiency is improved with increasing amount of frost irrespective of the frosting condition. The defrosting behavior is affected by frosting density as well as frost accumulation, both of which vary with the experimental operating conditions. The heat loss to the surrounding air decreases, and melting and defrosting efficiencies show high values with decreasing heat input.

  • The effect of heat exchanger surface treatment on the frosting/defrosting behavior in a fin-tube heat exchanger is investigated experimentally. It is found that the hydrophilic surface mainly influences on the frosting behavior, however, the hydrophobic surface gives some influence on the defrosting behavior. In view of frosting performance, surface-treated heat exchanger with either hydrophilic or hydrophobic characteristic shows a little improvement in the thermal performance than the aluminium heat exchanger with no surface treatment. The result reveals that the heat exchanger with hydrophobic surface treatment is more effective in view of the defrosting efficiency and time. The amounts of residual water on the surface-treated heat exchangers are shown to be smaller than those of the bare heat exchanger, therefore further improvements on the performance of re-operations are expected.

  • In this study, the defrosting behaviors according to the surface characteristics in the fin-tube heat exchanger is experimentally examined. It is found that the draining rate of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are evenly dispersed during defrosting, compared with that of the bare one. It is caused by the high density frost for the hydrophilic heat exchanger, and surface characteristic for the hydrophobic heat exchanger, respectively. The rest period of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are shorter and their weight of residual water are smaller than those of the bare heat exchanger The hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are more effective than the bare one in terms of defrosting efficiency, and the hydrophobic heat exchanger is better than the hydrophilic one.

  • Manual and predictive defrosting method is used in current refrigerators, which have several problems in terms of energy consumption and efficiency. fuming the defrosting system on by the amount of frost remains to be an important problem which has to be improved by refrigerator manufacturers. The sensing of the amount of frost by FDS(Frost Detecting Sensor) and its proper mounting point are investigated in the paper. Also the realization of actual defrosting system through experiments of operation, energy consumption and sensing mechanism is presented.

  • In this study, the defrosting behavior according to the surface characteristics of a fin-tube heat exchanger is experimentally examined. It has been found that the draining rates of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are evenly dispersed during do-frosting, compared with that of the bare one. This is due to the high density frost of the hydrophilic heat exchanger, and the surface characteristics of the hydrophobic heat ex-changer, The rest periods of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are shorter, and their weight of residual water is also smaller than that of the bare heat exchanger. The hydrophobic heat exchanger is the most efficient in terms of the defrosting efficiency.

  • Air-source heat pumps are widely used in winter as heating units due to their higher efficiency compared to electronic heaters or gas fired equipment. However, the air-source heat pump can cause discomfort during periodic defrosting operations. In this study, a PCM unit for continuous heating was adopted to solve this problem. The PCM unit consisted of a PCM, a heat exchanger, and control valves. It was installed between the outdoor and indoor units. The performance of the proposed system was measured during both defrosting and heating operations. The indoor unit showed an average leaving temperature of $26^{\circ}C$ after adopting the PCM unit for continuous heating during the defrosting operation.

  • This paper presents the development of a high efficiency transport refrigeration system for sliced-raw fish transportation. The refrigeration system is equipped with heat storage for reverse cycle-hot gas defrost (the stored heat is used during defrost cycle of the system). System performance and container operating conditions are analyzed during experimental investigation on a $3,225{\times}1,740{\times}1,640\;mm$ full-scale refrigerated container under cooling and defrosting conditions. The prototype system indicates better performance in terms of shorter cooling-down time, shorter defrost time and smaller fluctuations of refrigerated container's temperature.
