In this paper, a 3D model of the surface deformation is created in virtual environment. A proposed method is based on the fuzzy model and it is enough that only one rule set is added to the fuzzy model to model a surface deformation. Furthermore, the designer can easily determine which parameters should be used and how they should be changed in order to obtain the shapes as required. The proposed method is, thus, a simple, but effective technique that can also be used in practical applications. The results of the computer simulation are also given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm.
In the majority of previous studies on deformation of seabed structures using DEM, elements of structures have been assumed that it is composed with uniform materials or received fixed wave force, despite that actual submerged structures are composed with various size materials and influenced by complicated fluid field. The goal of this study is to develop a new model for analysis of seabed structure deformation using discontinuous structures composed with various size materials. As the first phase, a model using DEM and VOF, which can compute the deformation of submerged structures composed with various size materials, such as rubble mound structures, is proposed. A model test is carried out and then the validity of the model is discussed.

This paper focuses on the study of complete dynamic modeling and maximum dynamic load carrying capacity computation of N-flexible links and N-flexible joints mobile manipulator undergoing large deformation. Nonlinear dynamic analysis relies on the Timoshenko theory of beams. In order to model the system completely and precisely, structural and joint flexibility, nonlinear strain-displacement relationship, payload, and non-holonomic constraints will be considered to. A finite element solution method based on mixed method is applied to model the shear deformation. This procedure is considerably more involved than displacement based element and shear deformation can be readily included without inducing the shear locking in the element. Another goal of this paper is to present a computational procedure for determination of the maximum dynamic load of geometrically nonlinear manipulators with structural and joint flexibility. An effective measure named as Moment-Height Stability (MHS) measure is applied to consider the dynamic stability of a wheeled mobile manipulator. Simulations are performed for mobile base manipulator with two flexible links and joints. The results represent that dynamic stability constraint is sensitive when calculating the maximum carrying load. Furthermore, by changing the trajectory of end effector, allowable load also changes. The effect of torsional spring parameter on the joint deformation is investigated in a parametric sensitivity study. The findings show that, by the increase of torsional stiffness, the behavior of system approaches to a system with rigid joints and allowable load of robot is also enhanced. A comparison is also made between the results obtained from small and large deformation models. Fluctuation range in obtained figures for angular displacement of links and end effector path is bigger for large deformation model. Experimental results are also provided to validate the theoretical model and these have good agreement with the simulated results.

This study investigates the structural analysis result with vibration and fatigue on 3 kinds of bicycle saddle models. When the static load applies on the upper plane of model, maximum stress becomes within the allowable stress in case of model 1. As the value of Stress or deformation becomes lower on the order of model types 1, 2 and 3, these models become more stabilized or safer at durability in this order. On the vibration analysis, model type 1 has the maximum stress or deformation more than 5 times by comparing with model type 1 or 2. Model type 1 becomes most excellent on vibration durability. As maximum displacement due to vibration happens in case of model type 3, it becomes unstabilized. But the stresses of model types 1, 2 and 3 become within the allowable stress and these models are considered to be safe. At the status of the severest fatigue load, model type 3 becomes safer than model type 1 or 2. This study result is applied with the design of safe bicycle saddle and it can be useful to improve the durability by predicting prevention against the deformation due to its vibration and fatigue.

Thermal deformation of cast iron exhaust manifold for turbo diesel engine is investigated by finite element analysis (FEA). The FE model included the temperature dependent material properties as well as the interactions between exhaust manifold, cylinder head and fasteners. It also considers the sliding behavior of the flanges of exhaust manifold on cylinder head when either expansion or contraction of the exhaust manifold exceeds the fastener pretension. The result of analysis revealed that remarkable thermal deformation along the longitudinal direction. Compressive plastic deformation at high temperature remained tensile stress in manifold and resulted in longitudinal contraction at ambient temperature. The amount of contraction at each fastener position was predicted and compared with experimental results. Analysis results revealed that the model predicted deformation qualitatively, but more elaborated cyclic hardening behavior would be necessary to predict the deformation quantitatively.

Many problems in geotechnical engineering such as slop failure, debris flow, ground heaving due to embankment, and lateral flow caused by liquefaction are related to large deformation rather than small deformation. Traditional numerical methods such as finite element and finite difference methods have a difficulty to solve such large deformations because they use grids. A particle method was developed for fluid dynamics. The particle method can solve large deformation problems because it uses particles to discretize differential equations. It can also include soil constitutive model and thus solve soil behavior on various boundary conditions. In this study, a particle method, which is based on particles rather than grids, is introduced and used to simulate large deformation including soil failure. The developed method can be applied for various large deformation problems in geotechnical engineering because it incorporates soil constitutive models.
We present a three-dimensional average flow model considering elastic deformation of pad asperities for chemical mechanical planarization. To consider the contact deformation of pad asperities in the calculation of the flow factor, three-dimensional contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions is conducted from computer generated three dimensional roughness data. The average Reynolds equation and the boundary condition of both force and momentum balance are used to investigate the effect of pad roughness and external pressure conditions on film thickness and wafer position angle.

The development of deformation texture in FCC polycystalline metals during rolling was simulated by the finite element analysis using a large-deformation, elaatic-plastic, rate-dependent polycrystalline model of crystal plasticity. Different plastic anisotropy due to different orientation of each crystal makes inhomogeneous deformation. Assuming plane strain compression condition, the simulation with a high rate sensitivity resulted in main component change from Dillamore at low rate sensitivity to Brass component.
A phase mixture model was employed to simulate the deformation behaviour of metallic materials covering a wide grain size range from micrometer to nanometer scale. In this model a polycrystalline material is treated as a mixture of two phases: grain interior phase whose plastic deformation is governed by dislocation and diffusion mechanisms and grain boundary 'phase' whose plastic flow is controlled by a boundary diffusion mechanism. The main target of this study was the effect of grain size on stress and its strain rate sensitivity as well as on the strain hardening. Conventional Hall-Petch behaviour in coarse grained materials at high strain rates governed by the dislocation glide mechanism was shown to be replaced with inverse Hall-Petch behaviour in ultrafine grained materials at low strain rates, when both phases deform predominantly by diffusion controlled mechanisms. The model predictions are illustrated by examples from literature.
This study presents an analysis method for heat flow and deformation of sheet metal laser welding. A heat source model for 2-dimensional heat flow analysis of laser welding process was suggested in this paper. To investigate the availability of the heat source model, the analysis results were compared and estimated with the results of previous researches. We could get a good agreement between the results of numerical analysis and experiments in the temperature distribution of weldment. Due to the characteristics of welding process, some kinds of deformations are usually generated in a welded structure. Generally, the degree of deformation is dependent on the welding sequence constraints as well as input power Therefore, in this paper we evaluate the deformation of gas pressure vessel according to the welding sequence and input power. In the analysis of weld deformation, 2-dimensional thermo-elasto-plastic analysis was performed for the gas pressure vessel by using a commercial FE program package.
