  • In this study, the whole deformation conditions of domestic old tunnels and reinforcement methods for deformation tunnels were investigated and analysed, and the present conditions, occurrence cause and reinforcement methods of cavity behind the tunnel lining were investigated and analysed comprehensively. The deformation causes of domestic old tunnels could be classified in three kinds : change of earth pressure operating tunnel ground, material problem of concrete lining, mistake of design and construction. As a result of analysis, the tunnel deformation was occurred by not specific cause but various cause As a result of investigation for 455 domestic tunnel data, more than 70% of the tunnel deformation was related to leakage and the other deformation cause also accompanied leakage mostly. An applied reinforcement method was related to leakage and flood prevention measures, but application of reinforcement method for boundary area between tunnel and ground and tunnel periphery which influence on the tunnel stability was still defective. The cavity of domestic old tunnel occupied about 16% of the total tunnel length and about 68% of cavity was located in the crown of tunnel, and besides, the occurrence cause of cavity was analysed to design, construction and management cause. The filling method for cavity using filling material was comprehensively appling to cavity behind tunnel lining.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is any typical deformation pattern existing in complete denture when it was dried by using the 3D scanner and surface matching program. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 28 denture bases were fabricated with heat curing acrylic resin (each 14 upper and lower denture bases), and 14 denture bases (each 7 upper and lower denture bases) were stored in the water bottle (water stored), and another 14 denture bases were stored in the air (dry stored). Each specimen was scanned at $1^{st}$ day after deflasking, $14^{th}$ day after deflasking, and $28^{th}$ day after deflasking, and digitalized. Three dimensional deformation patterns were acquired by comparison of the data within storage group using surface matching program. For evaluating differences between groups, these data were compared statisticallyusing Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney-U test (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. When evaluating 3D deformation of denture base, obvious deformations were not found in maxillary and mandibular water storage group. However, in dry stored group, typical deformation pattern was detected as storage time passes. It occurred mostly in first two weeks. Major deformations were found in the bilateral posterior area in both maxillary and mandibular group. In maxillary dry stored group, a statistical significance was found. CONCLUSION. It was proved that in both upper and lower denture bases, dry storage caused more dimensional deformation than water storage with typical pattern.

  • Hwagae area, which is situated in the southeastern part of the Jirisan province, Yeongnam massif, Korea, is mainly composed of Precambrian Jirisan metamorphic rock complex (JMRC). Lithofacies distribution of the Precambrian constituent rocks mainly shows NS-trending tight fold and EW-trending open fold. This paper researched deformational phased structural characteristics of JMRC based on the geometric and kinematic features and the forming sequence of multi-deformed rock structures, and suggests that the geological structure of this area was formed through at least three phases of ductile deformation. (1) Most of structural elements related to the $D_1$ deformation were recognized as $S_{0-1-2}$ composite foliation which was transposed by the $D_2$ deformation. (2) The $D_2$ deformation occurred under the EW-directed tectonic compression, and formed the NS-trending $F_2$ fold and $D_2$ ductile shear zone which is (sub)parallel to the axial plane of $F_2$ fold. (3) The $D_3$ deformation occurred under the NS-directed tectonic compression, and partially reoriented the pre-$D_3$ structural elements into ENE or WNW direction. It indicates that the distribution of Precambrian lithofacies showing NS and EW-trending folds in the Hwagae area is closely associated with the $D_2$ and $D_3$ deformations, respectively.

  • A new position correction method using four fiducials as reference points was developed and examined. It was aimed to calibrate nonlinear deformation by numerous error sources. A correlation for correction was derived from the geometric relationship between four fiducials and chip position. Compared with three points method, it exhibited more accurate correction, especially for inner area of a quadrilateral composed of four fiducial points. Its accuracy was found to be increased as fiducials moves outwardly within a printed circuit board (PCB) and/or as they form more rectangle-like shape As for arbitrarily nonlinear deformation, this method can be applied using more than five fiducials. In this case, local-area calibration is carried out by sectioning a board area into several rectangular are as.

  • According to deformation data measured in some high concrete dams, for dam body deformation, there is a complex relationship with dam height and water head for different projects, instead of a simple monotonic relationship consistently. Meanwhile, settlement data of some large reservoirs exhibit a significant deformation of reservoir basin. As water conservancy project with high concrete dam and large storage capacity increase rapidly these decades, reservoir basin deformation problem has gradually gained engineers' attentions. In this paper, based on conventional analytical method, an improved analytical method for high concrete dam is proposed including the effect of reservoir basin deformation. Though establishing FEM models of two different scales covering reservoir basin and near dam area respectively, influence of reservoir basin on dam body is simulated. Then, forward and inverse analyses of concrete dam are separately conducted with conventional and proposed analytical methods. And the influence of reservoir basin deformation on dam working behavior is evaluated. The results of two typical projects demonstrate that reservoir basin deformation will affect dam deformation and stress to a certain extent. And for project with large and centralized water capacity ahead of dam site, the effect is more significant than those with a slim-type reservoir. As a result, influence of reservoir basin should be taken into consideration with conducting analysis of high concrete dam with large storage capacity.

  • Effects of gravitational orientation on gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) for 304 stainless steel were studied to determine the critical factors for weld pool formation, such as weld surface deformation and weld pool shape. This study was accomplished through an analytical study of weld pool stability as a function of primary welding parameters (arc current and arc holding time), material properties (surface tension and density), and melting efficiency (cross-sectional area). The stability of weld pool shape and weld surface deformation was confirmed experimentally by changing the welding position. The arc current and translational velocity were the major factors in determining the weld pool stability as a function of the gravitational orientation. A 200A spot GTAW showed a significant variation of the weld pool formation as the arc held longer than 3 seconds, however the weld pool shape and surface morphology for a 165A spot GTAW were 'stable', i.e., constant regardless of the gravitational orientation. The cross-sectional area of the weld (CSA) was one of the critical factors in determining the weld pool stability. The measured CSA ($13.5mm^2$) for the 200A spot GTAW showed a good agreement with the calculated CSA ($14.9mm^2$).

  • The study area is mainly composed of metasedimentary rocks which are included in Ogchon, Choson and Pyongan Groups. Because of thrust faults which are developed in this area, a coal bearing formation is repeatedly distributed two times, and Choson Group is thrusted over Pyongan Group. Deformation in this area was taken place in a series of three phases ($D_1$, $D_2$ and $D_3$) ; $D_1$ was most intense whereas $D_3$ was weakest. Thrust faults developed in the upper curst duringD2 produced cataclastic rocks and fault breccia, truncating regional slaty cleavage and earlier folds which were formed during $D_1$ stage. The quartz microstructures of metapsammitic rocks in Choson and Pyongan Groups suggest that dislocation creep mechanism predominated early in fabric development, afterwards deformation mechanism was transfered to pressure solution which intensified the earlier fabrics. According to strain analysis using quartz grains and quartz aggregate grains, the strain magnitude(Es) of Pyongan Group represents larger values than that of Choson Group due to the contrast of constituent minerals, the size of original quartz grains and matrix content. Apparent flattening type in strain pattern appears in the whole area. It is suggested that the relationship between Ogchon Group and Choson Group may be thrust contact.

  • To study the rail mapped deformation caused by the pier settlement of simply - supported bridges with China Railway Track System III (CRTS III) slab ballastless track (SBT) system under the mode of non-longitudinal connection ballastless track slab, this study derived an analytical solution to the mapped relationships between pier settlement and rail deformation based on the interlayer interaction mechanism of rail-pier and principle of stationary potential energy. The analytical calculation results were compared with the numerical results obtained by ANSYS finite element calculation, thus verifying the accuracy of analytical method. A parameter analysis was conducted on the key factors in rail mapped deformation such as pier settlement, fastener stiffness, and self-compacting concrete (SCC) stiffness of filling layer. The results indicate that rail deformation is approximately proportional to pier settlement. The smaller the fastener stiffness, the smoother the rail deformation curve and the longer the rail deformation area is. With the increase in the stiffness of SCC filling layer, the maximum positive deformation of rail gradually decreases, and the maximum negative deformation gradually increases. The deformation of rail caused by the pier settlement of common-span bridge structures will generate low-frequency excitation on high-speed trains.

  • This paper suggests a new experimental system and protocol of mechanical analysis for arterial cross-section research. So far, most methods of arterial studies have been focused on the deformation measurement in longitudinal and circumferential direction. The deformation in radial direction has been theoretically assumed by Poisson's ratio and/or the incompressibility of arterial wall. Also, the radial gradient of strains are neglected. In fact, the radial deformation and radial gradient of strains against blood pressure are important to be observed in the pathological point of view of artery. Proposed experimental system and protocol are to measure the deformation of cross-sectional artery. Also, this method enables to measure the deformation of anterior, posterior, and side site of cross-sectional area. It is meaningful to correlate the mechanically experimented data with pathological data of athroscIerotic artery.

  • The wavy extinction of quartz can be used as a standard indicator showing the degree of rock deformation. To determine the degree of rock deformation, the intensity of wavy extinction (IWE) of quartz was measured using petroggraphic microscope, digital camera, and NIH image. In this study, this method was applied to the Cheongsan porphyritic granite, Cheongsan two mica granite, and Baekrok granite to investigate the deformation intensity of Cheongsan area. NIH Image data show a high-grade deformation in the vicinity of the strike-slip fault (between Cheongsan granite and Baekrok granite) and the unconformity (between Cheongsan granite and Youngdong basin). Thus, the main deformation in these areas is most likely to be concentrated on the faults that generate Yeongdong basin and the strike slip faults between Cheongsan granite and Baekrok granite.
