To avoid premature damage to the connection joints of a conventional precast concrete shear wall, a new precast concrete shear wall system (NPSW) based on a plastic damage relocation design concept was proposed. Five specimens, including one monolithic cast-in-place concrete shear wall (MSW) as a reference and four NPSWs with different connection details (TNPSW, INPSW, HNPSW, and TNPSW-N), were designed and tested by lateral low-cyclic loading. To accurately assess the damage relocation effect and quantify the damage and deformation, digital image correlation (DIC) and conventional data acquisition methods were used in the experimental program. The concrete cracking development, crack area ratio, maximum residual crack width, curvature of the wall panel, lateral displacement, and deformed shapes of the specimens were investigated. The results showed that the plastic damage relocation design concept was effective; the initial cracking occurred at the bottom of the precast shear wall panel (middle section) of the proposed NPSWs. The test results indicated that the crack area ratio and the maximum residual crack width of the NPSWs were less than those of the MSW. The NPSWs were deformed continuously; significant distortions did not occur in their connection regions, demonstrating the merits of the proposed NPSWs. The curvatures of the middle sections of the NPSWs were lower than that of the MSW after a drift ratio of 0.5%. Among the NPSWs, HNPSW demonstrated the best performance, as its crack area ratio, concrete damage, and maximum residual crack width were the lowest.
When a bolt is tightened up to the range of plastic deformation, yielding is governed by the combined stresses due to the axial force developed in the bolt and the frictional torque developed on the thread in contact with the nut. Consideration is taken account of the fact that the unused portion of the thread has least sectional area being subject to initial yielding. Once yielding has taken place some strain hardening effect will result, Incremental stress-strain relations are used to treat the continued yielding, which is equivalent to treat continued yielding as if summing up the effects of thin walled cylinders subject to plastic deformation. M10 bolts of common and fine series thread are used for computational purposes. Variation of axial forces and frictional torques vs. the frictional coefficients tare presented together with other plots showing some characteristics of bolt under plastic deformation.
An analytical method based on the upper bound approach for the cup-bar axisymmetric combined extrusion is presented to determine the deformation zones as well as extrusion load and deformed geometry in the early stage. A new kiematically admissible velocity field is derived by the appropriate transformation of the original velocity field and applying the flow function approach. The derived velocity field is directly related to the boundary function for the plastically deforming zones and the parameter controlling the flow direction to the forward part or backward part. Experiments are carred out with the annealed aluminum 2024 at room temperature for the various area reductions. The workhardening effect is considered in the formulation as a function of the height ratio between the deformed billet and the orighinal billet to calculate the extrusion pressures. The theoretical predictions for the extrusion loads and deformed configuration are in good agreement with the experimental results.
Rapid prototyping (RP) technologies are mainly performed by layered manufacturing (LM) process which manufactures 3D physical objects by depositing 2D sections in a direction. Thus, deformations are apt to occur in overhanging area of the RP processed part. Also, excessive adhesion between part and platform of the RP apparatus is generated. In order to prevent these problems, most of the RP technologies adopt support structure. Main element to support a part in the support structure is strand. In actual field, however, the number of strand is determined by the software operating reference guide or RP system operator's experience. In this paper, a methodology to determine the optimal strand spacing is presented through experiments and measurements for the SL part deformation by change of strand spacing and part weight in the support structure of the stereolithography.
Extruded Profiles of Aluminum alloys have been widely used as parts and frames in mechanical and construction structures. Nowadays, mechanical processing of extruded Al alloy profiles is often employed for various industrial applications. Especially, the bending process is more and more applied and the process is greatly influenced by the distributed mechanical properties in the extruded profiles. Due to large reduction of area or extrusion ratio in ordinary production of extruded profiles, anisotropy is naturally induced by large severe deformation during the extrusion process. Therefore, the anisotropy properties play a great role in the bending process, as a post processing of extruded profiles and errors will be involved when the extruded profiles are treated as isotropic material, ignoring the induced anisotropy in the thin-walled extruded product. In the present work, the anisotropic material change is simulated, as a simplified method, employing Barlats six-component yield criterion in the rigid-plastic finite element method. Finite element computations are carried out for extrusion of a thin-walled part.
In this paper the stress and strain behaivor in near homogeneous isotropic matrix of metal like steel was studied roll forming of thin steel sheet for cylindrical pipe. Analytical results reveals a body which is on the area of square thickness along and perpendicular to the width of thin steel sheet is in the state of plane strain during roll forming. As a result construction of analytical method for calculating deformation load and stably deformed length along the width of strained steel sheet was established. Also loads applied during roll forming were analyzed using two typical thin steel sheet 12.3m thick steel sheet with 42.5kg /mm2 yield strength of pipe and 5.3mm thick steel sheet with 32.5kg/mm2 yield strength of pipe. Through this analysis applicability of the analytical method for deformation load during roll forming of cylindrical thin steel pipe was evaluated with a study of necessary production technology for roll forming and design technology for roll forming machine.
"Ploughing" on the flank face of the tool in the metal cutting process is due to the tool in the metal cutting process is due to the finite edge radius of the tool and due to the development of flank wear. Because of the high stresses near the cutting edge, elastic-plastic deformation would be caused between the tool and the machined surface over a small area of the tool flank. The deformation would affect the roughness of the machined surface. Recently, some attempts have been made to predict the surface roughness, but elastic-plastic effect due to ploughing in the cutting process has not been considered. The research has analyzed mechanism of the ploughing of the cutting process using contact mechanics. Tool and workpiece material properties have been taken into account in the prediction of the surface roughness. The surface roughness has been simulated by the surface-shaping system. The results between experiment and simulation have been compared and analyzed. analyzed.
