  • In this paper, we propose a 3-D finite element (FE) analysis model with combined physical behavior and kinematical impact factors for evaluation of residual stress in multi-impact shot peening. The FE model considers both physical behavior of material and characteristics of kinematical impact. The physical parameters include elastic-plastic FE modeling of shot ball, material damping coefficient, dynamic friction coefficient. The kinematical parameters include impact velocity and diameter of shot ball. Multi-impact FE model consists of 3-D symmetry-cell. We can describe a certain repeated area of peened specimen under equibiaxial residual stress by the cell. With the cell model, we investigate the FE peening coverage, dependency on the impact sequence, effect of repeated cycle. The proposed FE model provides converged and unique solution of surface stress, maximum compressive residual stress and deformation depth at four impact positions. Further, in contrast to the rigid and elastic shots, plastically deformable shot produces residual stresses closer to experimental solutions by X-ray diffraction. Consequently, it is confirmed that the FE model with peening factors and plastic shot is valid for multi-shot peening analyses.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved Active Shape Model for extracting lip contour. Lip deformation is modeled by a statistically deformable model based Active Shape Model. Because each point is moved independently using local profile information in Active Shape Model, many error may happen. To use a global information, we define an energy function similar to an energy function in Active Contour Model, and points are moved to positions at which the total energy is minimized. The experiments have been performed for many lip images of Tulip 1 database, and show that our method extracts lip shape than a traditional ASM more exactly.

  • The lattice dynamics of Cr, Mo, and W are formulated in terms of a simple shell model in which the transition metal ions in the crystals are treated as deformable ions. The model involves a total of seven parameters; two charge parameters and five force constant parameters. The numerical values of the model parameters are determined by fitting to three elastic constants and the lattice vibrational frequencies measured by the neutron inelastic scattering experiments. Attempts are made to compute the phonon dispersion relations, the frequency distribution functions, and the lattice specific heats of three metals. The results are compared with experiments. It is found that the simple shell model can give a satisfactory account for the lattice vibrational characteristics of transition metals. The usefulness of the model is then discussed in comparison With other lattice dynamical models.

  • In this work, free vibration characteristics of functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) nanobeams based on third order parabolic shear deformation beam theory are studied by presenting a Navier type solution as the first attempt. Electro-mechanical properties of FGP nanobeam are supposed to change continuously throughout the thickness based on power-law model. To capture the small size effects, Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is adopted. Using Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal governing equations for third order shear deformable piezoelectric FG nanobeams are obtained and they are solved applying analytical solution. By presenting some numerical results, it is demonstrated that the suggested model presents accurate frequency results of the FGP nanobeams. The influences of several parameters including, external electric voltage, power-law exponent, nonlocal parameter and mode number on the natural frequencies of the size-dependent FGP nanobeams is discussed in detail.

  • An analytical solution of the buckling governing equations of functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) nanobeams obtained by using a developed third-order shear deformation theory is presented. Electro-mechanical properties of FGP nanobeam are supposed to change continuously in the thickness direction based on power-law model. To capture the small size effects, Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is adopted. Employing Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal governing equations of a FG nanobeams made of piezoelectric materials are obtained and they are solved using Navier-type analytical solution. Results are provided to show the effect of different external electric voltage, power-law index, nonlocal parameter and slenderness ratio on the buckling loads of the size-dependent FGP nanobeams. The accuracy of the present model is verified by comparing it with nonlocal Timoshenko FG beams. So, this study makes the first attempt for analyzing buckling behavior of higher order shear deformable FGP nanobeams.

  • The present article deals with post-buckling of geometrically imperfect concrete plates reinforced by graphene oxide powder (GOP) based on general higher order plate model. GOP distributions are considered as uniform and linear models. Utilizing a shear deformable plate model having five field components, it is feasible to verify transverse shear impacts with no inclusion of correction factor. The nonlinear governing equations have been solved via an analytical trend for deriving post-buckling load-deflection relations of the GOP-reinforced plate. Derived findings demonstrate the significance of GOP distributions, geometric imperfectness, foundation factors, material compositions and geometrical factors on post-buckling properties of reinforced concrete plates.

  • Experimental and numerical study was done to confirm the effect of the flexible tube in pipeline on transient flow oscillation. Experiment was made for a pipeline with and without deformable flexible tube using a single pumping system of main stainless pipe. The wave speeds of main pipe and flexible tube were calculated from the pipe material properties, structures, and boundary conditions. Time dependent pressure fluctuations were calculated for the pipeline using the simple and the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic models for the deformation of main pipe and flexible tube. Pressure calculated by the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model showed better agreement with measured one than pressure by the simple model. Experimental and numerical results show that the maximum pressure as well as amplitude of pressure oscillation was decreased by inserting short flexible tube in pipeline. Hence, inserted short flexible tube to pipeline was found to be effective for the suppression of strong pressure oscillation. Moreover, the wave speed in pipe was discussed based on numerical and experimental results.

  • Structural model of laminated composite plates based on the first order shear deformable plate theory and subjected to a combination of magnetic and thermal fields is developed. Coupled equations of motion are derived via Hamilton's principle on the basis of electromagnetic equations (Faraday, Ampere, Ohm, and Lorenz equations) and thermal equations which are involved in constitutive equations. In order to obtain the implications of a number of geometrical and physical features of the model, one special case is investigated, that is, free vibration of a composite plate immersed in a transversal magnetic field. Special coupling effects between the magnetic and elastic fields are revealed in this paper.

  • Based upon differential quadrature method (DQM) and nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT), an investigation on the free vibrations of 2D plate systems with nano-dimensions has been provided taking into account the effects of different mechanical loadings. In order to capture different mechanical loadings, a general form of variable compressive load applied in the axial direction of the plate system has been introduced. The studied plate has been constructed from two types of particles which results in graded material properties and nanoscale pores. The established formulation for the plate is in the context of a novel shear deformable model and the equations have been solved via a semi-numerical trend. Presented results indicate the prominence of material composition, nonlocal coefficient, strain gradient coefficient and boundary conditions on vibrational frequencies of nano-size plate.
