Numerical Investigation of Pressure Fluctuation Reducing in Draft Tube of Francis Turbines

  • For a prototype turbine operating under part load conditions, the turbine output is fluctuating strongly, leading to the power station incapable of connecting to the grid. The field test of the prototype turbine shows that the main reason is the resonance between the draft tube vortex frequency and the generator natural vibration frequency. In order to reduce the fluctuation of power output, different measures including the air admission, water admission and adding flow deflectors in the draft tube are put forward. CFD method is adopted to simulate the three-dimensional unsteady flow in the Francis turbine, to calculate pressure fluctuations in draft tube under three schemes and to compare with the field test result of the prototype turbine. Calculation results show that all the three measures can reduce the pressure pulsation amplitude in the draft tube. The method of water supply and adding flow deflector both can effectively change the frequency and avoid resonance, thus solving the output fluctuation problem. However, the method of air admission could not change the pressure fluctuation frequency.

  • The present study examined the free surface flow of a liquid sheet near a sprinkler head using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model and considered the feasibility of the empirical model for predicting the initial spray characteristics of the sprinkler head through a comparison of the CFD results. The CFD calculation for a simplified sprinkler geometry considering the nozzle and deflector were performed using the commercially available CFD package, CFX 14.0 with the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and theVolume of Fluid (VOF) method. The predicted velocity of the empirical model at the edge of deflector were in good agreement with that of the CFD model for the flat plate region but there was a certain discrepancy between the two models for the complex geometry region. The mean droplet diameter predicted by the empirical model differed significantly from the measured value of the real sprinkler head. On the other hand, the empirical model can be used to understand the mechanism of droplet formation near the sprinkler head and predict the initial spray characteristics for cases without experimental data.

  • Scour protection methods can be categorized as two types: The first is to reduce the horseshoe and wake vortices which are the main reasons for local scour. Either small cylindrical structures or separated vertical deflectors can be placed in front of the pier or the horizontal deflector (or collar) can be attached to the pier like the spoiler to reduce the dynamics of vortical structures. The second is to employ the protection layer to keep the bed material in place, which is a common method with a merit of immediate effect by using block mat or tetrapod. This study examined the effect of scour reduction using the former method. The relationship between the reflector interval and reduction of scour was not clear. It is assumed that the width of the reflector is somewhat correlated with the reduction of the scour. As the KC numbers increases, the Effect of Scour reduction rate is shown to decrease. Also, Scour reduction rate showed a rapid change at $U_R=25$ or KC = 8.

  • An electron beam microcolumn composed of an electron emitter, micro lenses, scan deflector, and focus lenses have been fabricated and tested in the STEM mode. In this paper, we report a technique of precisely aligning the electron lenses by the laser diffraction patterns instead of the conventional alignment method based on aligner and STM. STEM images of a standard Cu-grid were observed using a fabricated microcolumn under both the retarding and accelerating modes.

  • 최근 중대형 세단이나 SW 차량의 썬루프 개구량이 증대되고 사양의 고급화가 진행되면서 기존의 판형 디플렉터를 대신하여 새로이 튜브형 디플렉터의 이용이 늘어나고 있다. 본 연구에서는 실차 무향 풍동을 이용한 실차 썬루프 바람소리 실험을 통하여 튜브형 디플렉터의 특성을 확인하였다. 튜브형 디플렉터의 성능에 영향을 줄 수 있는 인자들의 최적화를 통하여 초기 설계 사양 및 경쟁차보다 우수한 썬루프 바람소리 성능을 얻을 수 있었다.

  • Confocal scanning microscopy (CSM) is an important instrument in a wide variety of imaging applications because of its ability to provide three-dimensional images of thick, volume specimens. The mechanism for two-dimensional beam scanning and optical sectioning has an important roe in CSM as the three-dimensional profiler. This optical sectioning property arises from the use of a point detector, which serves to attenuate the signals from out-of-focus. The intensity profile for the open loop scanning should be matched with its response for the standard. The non-linearity can be minimized with the optical sectioning or the optical probe of the closed loop control. This paper shows the mathematical expression of the light such as the extinction curve in the optical fields of system using AO deflector, the axial/lateral response experimentally when the error sources change, and the methods of optical sectioning.   • Rubbing occurs when a rotating element comes in contact with a stationary element. In the steam turbines, the rotating element is the rotor while the stationary elements are usually the oil deflectors and packing seals. Rubbing phenomenon may be often obseued on a new or rebuilt machine rather than on a machine that has been operating for several months or years. Rubbing in the turbine has been classified into two modes by the operating conditions: 1) start up or shut down, 2) steady state. At start up or shut down operation, rubbing produces synchronous whirl vibration, which are caused by thermal bow of the shaft due to localized heating on the shaft surface. While subsynchronous whirl vibration is caused by partial rubbing during the steady state operation. In this paper, the two case studies of troubleshooting for excessive vibration caused by rubbing in the actual steam turbines are investigated.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the ignition feasibility of a single shot, air-assisted gasoline fuel injector operated in a constant volume combustion chamber under atmospheric condition. A number of parameters has been selected for this experiments, such as dwelling time, spark gap position(r,z), spark electrode geometry, supplied air and fuel masses and spray cone deflector angle. On-site visual inspection of the instantaneous flame glow was chosen as one way to judge the successful ignition. In addition, chamber pressure and occasional photography were mobilized as for data recording. It was clearly observed that there was an entrainment air-fuel mixture toward spray axis from the spray formation and its development later on. The optimum ignition conditions were found for those parameters given above.

  • The research on multi electron beam systems is being carried out by various methods. We are studying multi electron beam system using miniaturized electron beam columns. The column consists of electrostatic lenses, electrostatic deflector and tip emitter. Our operating system controls 4 column array, captures images of each column and maintains the instrument. We present the usefulness of our operating system for multi columns by capturing images of each column.
