This study investigates the injection molding of a plastic rack gear and focuses on deflections in the part. The causes of deflections were found and resolved through a trade-off study by injection molding analysis. Based on a warpage analysis, the fiber orientation was found to be a dominant factor in the occurrence of deflections. Changes in the part design and various injection conditions were analyzed for their effects in reducing deflections. Based on the trade-off study, a new part bottom design, injection time, and melt temperature were recommended. A trial injection was done for the new plastic rack gear, and measurements showed that its flatness surpassed that of the original part and met the specified requirement. The short injection time, low melt temperature, and symmetric similar configuration of the part contributed to the reduction in deflections. Therefore, optimized gate design and injection conditions as well as a new part design were validated through injection molding analysis in this study.
The paper begins by presenting a unified variational approach to the lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) analysis of doubly symmetric prismatic and tapered thin-walled beams with open cross-sections, which accounts for the influence of the pre-buckling deflections. This approach (i) extends the kinematical assumptions usually adopted for prismatic beams, (ii) consistently uses shell membrane theory in general coordinates and (iii) adopts Trefftz's criterion to perform the bifurcation analysis. The proposed formulation is then applied to investigate the influence of the pre-buckling deflections on the LTB behaviour of prismatic and web-tapered I-section simply supported beams and cantilevers. After establishing an interesting analytical result, valid for prismatic members with shear centre loading, several elastic critical moments/loads are presented, discussed and, when possible, also compared with values reported in the literature. These numerical results, which are obtained by means of the Rayleigh-Ritz method, (i) highlight the qualitative differences existing between the LTB behaviours of simply supported beams and cantilevers and (ii) illustrate how the influence of the pre-buckling deflections on LTB is affected by a number of factors, namely ($ii_1$) the minor-to-major inertia ratio, ($ii_2$) the beam length, ($ii_3$) the location of the load point of application and ($ii_4$) the bending moment diagram shape.

Deflection in a beam of a composite frame is a serviceability design criterion. This paper presents a methodology for rapid prediction of long-term mid-span deflections of beams in composite frames subjected to service load. Neural networks have been developed to predict the inelastic mid-span deflections in beams of frames (typically for 20 years, considering cracking, and time effects, i.e., creep and shrinkage in concrete) from the elastic moments and elastic mid-span deflections (neglecting cracking, and time effects). These models can be used for frames with any number of bays and stories. The training, validating, and testing data sets for the neural networks are generated using a hybrid analytical-numerical procedure of analysis. Multilayered feed-forward networks have been developed using sigmoid function as an activation function and the back propagation-learning algorithm for training. The proposed neural networks are validated for an example frame of different number of spans and stories and the errors are shown to be small. Sensitivity studies are carried out using the developed neural networks. These studies show the influence of variations of input parameters on the output parameter. The neural networks can be used in every day design as they enable rapid prediction of inelastic mid-span deflections with reasonable accuracy for practical purposes and require computational effort which is a fraction of that required for the available methods.
The concept of "Saturation Impulse" for rigid, perfectly plastic structures with finite-deflections subjected to dynamic loading was put forward by Zhao, Yu and Fang (1994a). This paper extends the concept of Saturation Impulse to the analysis of structures such as simply supported circular plates, simply supported and fully clamped square plates, and cylindrical shells subjected to rectangular pressure pulses in the medium load range. Both upper and lower bounds of nondimensional saturation impulses are presented.
This paper deals with the nonlinear static deflections of functionally graded (FG) porous under thermal effect. Material properties vary in both position-dependent and temperature-dependent. The considered nonlinear problem is solved by using Total Lagrangian finite element method within two-dimensional (2-D) continuum model in the Newton-Raphson iteration method. In numerical examples, the effects of material distribution, porosity parameters, temperature rising on the nonlinear large deflections of FG beams are presented and discussed with porosity effects. Also, the effects of the different porosity models on the FG beams are investigated in temperature rising.

A rational method for prediction of long-term deflections of reinforced concrete beams under sustained loads was proposed. Strain and stress distributions of uncracked and fully cracked sections after creep and shrinkage were determined from the requirements of strain compatibility and force equilibrium of a section, and then long-term deflections were calculated from the section analysis results. In fully cracked section analysis, noncoincidence of the neutral axis of strain and the neutral axis of stress after creep and shrinkage was taken into account. The accuracy of the proposed method was verified by comparison with several experimental measurements of beam deflections. The proposed approximate procedure gave the better predictions than the existing approximate methods. At the same time, the proposed method also retained simplicity of the calculation, since maximum long-term deflection could be obtained without tedious integration of the curvatures.
The use of higher strength materials with the strength methed of design has resulted in more slender member and shallower sections. For this reason, it is necessary to satisfy the requirements of serviceability even though the structural safety is the most important limit state. This paper is only concerned with the control of deflections in the serviceability. In this study, an analytical model is presented to predict the deflections of reinforced concrete beams to given loading and environmental conditions. This model is based on the finite element approach in which a finite element is generally divided into a number of stiffening effect due to cracking, creep and shrinkage. Comparisons are made with available measured deflections reported by others to assess the capability of the layered beam model. The calculated values of instantaneous and long-term deflection show good agreement with experimental results in the range of tension stiffening parameter $\beta$ between 2.5 and 3.0.
Maximum deflection in a beam is a design criteria and occurs generally at or close to the mid-span. Neural networks have been developed for the continuous composite beams to predict the inelastic mid-span deflections (typically for 20 years, considering cracking, and time effects, i.e., creep and shrinkage, in concrete) from the elastic moments and elastic mid-span deflections (neglecting instantaneous cracking and time effects). The training and testing data for the neural networks is generated using a hybrid analytical-numerical procedure of analysis. The neural networks have been validated for four example beams and the errors are shown to be small. This methodology, of using networks enables a rapid estimation of inelastic mid-span deflections and requires a computational effort almost equal to that required for the simple elastic analysis. The neural networks can be extended for the composite building frames that would result in huge saving in computational time.

This paper introduces the hull deflection analysis method by using the direct measurements. Accordingly, this paper demonstrates how the hull deflection data is obtained by the reverse calculations using the bending moments from the stain gauge and bearing reactions from jack-up method. Where the hull deflection data provided by this research is used for the shafting alignment calculations for identical or similar vessels, shafting failures due to hull deflections can be minimized. It will also save time and expenses associated finite element method to predict hull deflections.
Experimental investigations have revealed significant mismatches between analytical estimates and experimentally measured deflections of transmission towers. These are attributed to bolt slip and joint flexibility. This study focuses on effects of joint flexibility on tower deflections and proposes criterions for permissible deflection limits based on the stresses in joints. The objective has been framed given that guidelines are not available in the codes of practices for transmission towers with regard to the permissible limits of deflection. The analysis procedure is geometric and material nonlinear with consideration of joint flexibility in the form of extension or contraction of the cover plates. The deflections due to bolt slip are included in the study by scaling up the deflections obtained from analysis by a factor. Using the results of the analysis, deflection limits for the towers are proposed by limiting the stresses in the joints. The obtained limits are then applied to a new full scale tower to demonstrate the application of the current study.
