The present work describes the capabilities of laser beam deflection (LBD) technique for the analysis of the stresses developed during hydrogen diffusion through Pd foil electrode. First, we explain briefly the elasto-diffusive (Gorsky effect) and diffusion-elastic phenomena. A model for the diffusion-elastic phenomenon is theoretically derived from the solution of the Fick's equation for given initial and boundary conditions, Vegard's second law and Hooke's law. Second, we introduce how to apply the principle of LBD technique to the study on the stresses generated during hydrogen diffusion. From the comparison of the deflection transients numerically calculated with those experimentally measured, we finally discuss the change in the tensile deflection with time in terms of hydrogen concentration profile transient and hydrogen diffusivity.

Recently, underground pipes are utilized in various fields of applications such as sewer lines, drain lines, water mains, gas lines, telephone and electrical conduits, culverts, oil lines, etc. Most of pipes are installed for long-term purposes and they should be safely installed in consideration of installation conditions because there are unexpected various terrestrial loading conditions. In this paper, we present the result of investigation pertaining to the structural behavior of glass fiber reinforced thermosetting polymer plastic (GFRP) flexible pipes buried underground. The mechanical properties of the GFRP flexible pipes produced in the domestic manufacturer are determined and the results are reported in this paper. In addition, ring deflection is measured by the field tests and the finite element analysis (FEA) is also conducted to simulate the structural behavior of GFRP pipes buried underground. From the field test results, we predicted long-term, up to 50 years, ring deflection of GFRP pipes buried underground based on the method suggested by the existing literature. It was found that the GFRP flexible pipe to be used for cooling water intake system in the nuclear power plant is appropriate because 5% ring deflection limitation for 50 years could be satisfied.

The deflection of reinforced concrete members can be highly variable, due to uncertainties in the characteristics of the concrete. However, current standards do not take this problem into account, instead recommending only the minimum thickness and maximum allowable deflections based on empirical data. This paper is aimed at evaluation deflection variabilities by applying a probabilistic analysis model to a finite element analysis model. To evaluate the variabilities of deflections, a Monte Carlo simulation, which incorporated the eight parameters related to concrete, reinforcement, member size, and tension stiffening. The results showed that lager spans were more sensitive to the deflection due to loads and that as the applied live loads were increases and the slab thickness were decreased, the deflection variability increased.
The article presents a theoretical-experimental approach developed for modeling the coefficient of sliding friction in the dynamic system tool-workpiece in slide diamond burnishing of low-alloy unhardened steels. The experimental setup, implemented on conventional lathe, includes a specially designed device, with a straight cantilever beam as body. The beam is simultaneously loaded by bending (from transverse slide friction force) and compression (from longitudinal burnishing force), which is a reason for geometrical nonlinearity. A method, based on the idea of separation of the variables (time and metric) before establishing the differential equation of motion, has been applied for dynamic modeling of the beam elastic curve. Between the longitudinal (burnishing force) and transverse (slide friction force) forces exists a correlation defined by Coulomb's law of sliding friction. On this basis, an analytical relationship between the beam deflection and the sought friction coefficient has been obtained. In order to measure the deflection of the beam, strain gauges connected in a "full bridge" type of circuit are used. A flexible adhesive is selected, which provides an opportunity for dynamic measurements through the constructed measuring system. The signal is proportional to the beam deflection and is fed to the analog input of USB DAQ board, from where the signal enters in a purposely created virtual instrument which is developed by means of Labview. The basic characteristic of the virtual instrument is the ability to record and visualize in a real time the measured deflection. The signal sampling frequency is chosen in accordance with Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem. In order to obtain a regression model of the friction coefficient with the participation of the diamond burnishing process parameters, an experimental design with 55 experimental points is synthesized. A regression analysis and analysis of variance have been carried out. The influence of the factors on the friction coefficient is established using sections of the hyper-surface of the friction coefficient model with the hyper-planes.
This paper investigates the mechanical response of simply supported one-way reinforced concrete slabs under fire through numerical analysis. The numerical model is constructed using the software ABAQUS, and verified by experimental results. Generally, mechanical response of the slab can be divided into four stages, accompanied with drastic stress redistribution. In the first stage, the bottom of the slab is under tension and the top is under compression. In the second stage, stress at bottom of the slab becomes compression due to thermal expansion, with the tension zone at the mid-span section moving up along the thickness of the slab. In the third stage, compression stress at bottom of the slab starts to decrease with the deflection of the slab increasing significantly. In the fourth stage, the bottom of the slab is under tension again, eventually leading to cracking of the slab. Parametric studies were further performed to investigate the effects of load ratio, thickness of protective layer, width-span ratio and slab thickness on the performance of the slab. Results show that increasing the thickness of the slab or reducing the load ratio can significantly postpone the time that deflection of the slab reaches span/20 under fire. It is also worth noting that slabs with the span ratio of 1:1 reached a deflection of span/20 22 min less than those of 1:3. The thickness of protective layer has little effect on performance of the slab until it reaches a deflection of span/20, but its effect becomes obvious in the late stages of fire.
Insulating glass units (IGUs) have been widely used in buildings in recent years due to their superior thermal insulation performance. However, because of the panel reciprocating motion and fatigue deterioration of sealants under long-term wind loads, many IGUs have the problem of early failure of watertight properties in real usage. This study aimed to propose a statistical method for wind-induced deflection of IGU panels during the whole life service period, for further precise analysis of the accumulated fatigue damage at the sealed part of the edge bond. By the estimation of the wind occurrence regularity based on wind pressure return period, the events of each wind speed interval during the whole life were obtained for the IGUs at 50m height in Beijing, which are in good agreement with the measured data. Also, the wind-induced deflection analysis method of IGUs based on the formula of airspace coefficient was proposed and verified as an improvement of the original stiffness distribution method with the average relative error compared to the test being about 3% or less. Combining the two methods above, the deformation of the outer and inner panes under wind loads during 30 years was precisely calculated, and the deflection and stress state at selected locations were obtained finally. The results show that the compression displacement at the secondary sealant under the maximum wind pressure is close to 0.3mm (strain 2.5%), and the IGUs are in tens of thousands of times the low amplitude tensile-compression cycle and several times to dozens of times the relatively high amplitude tensile-compression cycle environment. The approach proposed in this paper provides a basis for subsequent studies on the durability of IGUs and the wind-resistant behaviors of curtain wall structures.

In this study, a structural characteristics analysis system for motor-integrated high-speed spindle systems, “SpindleX”, is developed based on the Timoshenko theory and the multi-layered finite element method. Since “SpindleX” has the various analysis modules related to static deflection analysis, modal analysis, frequency response analysis, unbalance response analysis and so on, it is useful in performing systematically and quantitatively the design and evaluation processes of spindle system under the windows GUI environment. Also, to enhance the user-friendliness, “SpindleX” possesses the various additional functions such as the DXF file interface for auto-importing the shape and geometric data of spindle system from the DXF file, the bearing database for auto-importing the mechanical properties and geometric data of bearing by the bearing number, and the graphical visualization for certificating the imported and analysed data of spindle system.
In this paper, to examine the difference between the linear and non-linear static, dynamic analysis for a structure, a cantilevered beam was used. Then, an external transverse static and dynamic loads were applied at the free end of the beam. Classical theories were used for the linear analysis and the EDISON CSD solver, co-rotational dynamic FEM program, was used for nonlinear analysis. In the static analysis, effects of the load for the beam deflection were observed in the linear and nonlinear analysis. Then, normalized displacement of tip of the beam was predicted for different frequency ration and a significant difference was obtained in the vicinity of the resonant frequency. In addition, effects of frequency and time for the beam deflection were investigated to find the frequency delay.

This paper describes static and dynamic weak point analysis of spindle systems to eliminate high concentrated bending point on spindle and improve total stiffness of spindle systems. The weak point analysis is based on the evaluation of bending curves of spindles. For static weak point analysis the bending curve is derived from static deflection curve and for dynamic weak point analysis it is derived from the mode shape curves in consideration of the transfer function at exciting point. The validity of the weak point search methodology is verified by comparison of the static deflection, the natural frequency and the dynamic compliance between the original and the improved spindle.
In this study, analysis and design programs of bending of RC beams strengthened with fiber sheets are developed by using Visual Basic Language. The program consists two groups, ultimate strength method and nonlinear flexural analysis method. Ultimate strength method regards concrete compressive stress as a rectangular stress block and do not consider tensile stress of concrete and load-deflection curves. On the other hand, nonlinear flexural analysis considers tensile stress of concrete, load-deflection curves, state of stress distribution and failure strain of strengthening material. Also, the analysis method used in this study regards nonlinear flexural stress as compressive stress of concrete. This program can be a good tool for determining the bending strength of strengthened RC beams and estimating the amount of fiber sheets for practical use.
