  • The ROK military uses Performance Based Logistics(PBL) as one of the ways to utilize civilian resources and advanced techniques. However, the Korean PBL is mainly focused on purchasing and repairing parts, which is not contributing to the improvement of the availability of overall system. The objective of this study is to suggest the methodology to evaluate the PBL metrics using the simulation and meta model. A meta model is a regression model to analyze the effect of the PBL through simulating various scenarios with performance metrics. As a result, if the PBL is limited to the part level, the performance has little influence on the availability of overall system. In addition, analysis using the meta model shows that it cannot achieve the performance targets when the same metrics are applied to various items without considering the characteristics of the applied items. Therefore, in order to improve availability, PBL coverage should be extended to a system level that includes key components that have a large impact on availability. If multiple items are included in the PBL coverage, the metrics should be applied differently, taking into account the characteristics of each item.

  • This paper presents the network security modeling methodology and simulation using the hierarchical and modular modeling and simulation framework. Recently, Howard and Amoroso developed the cause-effect model of the cyber attack, defense, and consequences, Cohen has been proposed the simplified network security simulation methodology using the cause-effect model, however, it is not clear that it can support more complex network security model and also the model-based cyber attack simulation. To deal with this problem, we have adopted the hierarchical and modular modeling and simulation environment so called the System Entity Structure/Model Base (SES/MB) framework which integrates the dynamic-based formalism of simulation with the symbolic formalism of AI. Several simulation tests performed on sample network system verify the soundness of our method.

  • Two methods for analyzing interaction between shaped charge jets and targets are taken in AVEAM-MT (ADD Vulnerability and Effectiveness Assessment Model for Materiel Target), which is a model for vulnerability analysis of materiel targets and being developed by ADD. One is an empirical method improved from the Fireman-Pugh technique for rapid penetration calculation into target components. The other is ADD-TSC(ADD Tandem Shaped Charge), which is a physics-based model extended to be applicable for shaped charge jets from the Walker-Anderson penetration model for higher fidelity analysis. In this paper, the two methods are briefly described, and the empirical technique is compared to the physics-based model in the prediction of residual penetration capacity. The latter is also compared to experimental results found in literature in predicting penetration capacity. These comparisons show that both methods can be used for fast calculations or higher fidelity calculations in vulnerability analysis models like AVEAM-MT which is required to perform a considerable amount of iterative simulation for damage analysis.

  • In safety-critical systems (SCS), failure may result in accidents with serious damage to human beings and property. As systems become more complex and automated, the goal of acquiring safety has attracted increasing attention lately in the defense industry, as well as the rail, automotive, and aerospace industries, among others. As such, the Department of Defense and international organizations have established appropriate standards and guidelines for systems safety and design. To this end, there has been research on the processes, methods, and associated tools for safety design. However, those results do not seem to sufficiently utilize system architectural information. The purpose of this paper is to provide a more systematic approach to SCS design. To better identify potential hazards, design information at each level of system hierarchy is exploited. Based on the results, an integrated process model was developed by combining the processes of system design and safety analysis. As a case study, the resultant integrated process model was applied to the safety design of an automobile system, which shows useful results for safety evaluation.

  • Service quality research is being conducted actively to improve customer satisfaction in various fields, but no research has been done on the service quality of small arms in the national defense. To enhance the user satisfaction and quality of small arms, this study aimed to derive the main quality attributes, measure the current level of satisfaction, and explore the elements requiring improvement. For this, a questionnaire survey based on the Kano model and SERVQUAL model was conducted on the identified service quality factors through discussions of experts involved in the production, quality assurance, and operation. All service quality factors were classified as one-dimensional elements, and an analysis of the Kano-SERVQUAL integrated approach showed that the user's expectation and dissatisfaction coefficient had a strong positive correlation with a 1% significance level, and user's perception value and satisfaction coefficient had a negative correlation with the 1% significance level. Using the Kano-SERVQUAL integrated approach, the priority service quality attributes for small arms requiring improvement among the many areas of service quality could be identified. Overall, it is expected that service-quality-level measurements can be used to improve the quality level of munitions as well as user satisfaction.

  • Recently, we have a growing interest in the washland construction for the function of flood defense in flood season and also as an ecosystem in non flood season. Therefore this study performed the hydraulic and hydrologic analysis for washland construction plan as sustainable flood defense alternative in flood season and wetland application possibility. The study area is Topyoung-cheon basin in Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam. A Topyoung-cheon basin includes a Woopo wetland which is the largest nature wetland in Korea and a Topyoung-cheon is ond of the tributaries of Nakdong river. We assume that the artificial washland is constructed in upperstream and downstream of Woopo wetland, and In flood season, the hydraulic analysis for the investigation of the effectiveness of flood level mitigation is performed by HEC-RAS model. Simulation of model is performed from 7 scenarioes of washland construction. As the result in flood season, the flood level is reduced by maximum 0.56 meter as we construct the washlands by 7 scenarios. Also, we performed hydrologic analysis for the investigation of water balance in washland in non flood season using SWAT model. From the result of water balance analysis, we found that the minimum water level of washland was maintained in about 1.3 meter for one year.

  • The 30mm anti-aircraft gun has been developed with various types of weapon systems such as protective, protective complex, and wheel-type anti-aircraft artillery. The role of this anti-aircraft gun is an important anti-aircraft weapon in charge of air defense. Anti-aircraft weapons are tasked with defending the airspace from aircraft attacks. In particular, anti-aircraft weapons are organized in combination with mechanized units. And anti-aircraft weapons are prone to attack by enemies because they operate on the front lines of the battlefield. The enemy is expected to attack our troops by covering up or concealing as much as possible in order to increase their viability. Therefore, this study analyzed whether our 30mm anti-aircraft bullets could subdue the enemy in cover. This study analyzed the performance of 30mm anti-aircraft bullets using the M&S technique. For this study, live shooting and simulation method by M&S were used for the experiment. In this study, steel plate and plywood were used for the live shooting experiment. In addition, in the simulation process through M&S, this study used the PRODAS model, AUTODYN model, and Split-x model to analyze the trajectory, penetration, and fragmentation capability of 30mm anti-aircraft bullets. According to the experimental results, it has been proven that 30mm anti-aircraft bullets can destroy enemy armored vehicles. 30mm anti-aircraft bullets succeeded in quickly subduing enemies concealed in general buildings or forests. In this way, it was possible to minimize damage to allies in advance.

  • It is essential to perform driving performance tests of military vehicles on rough terrain. A full car test is limited by cost and time constraints, because of which a dynamic analysis via computer simulation is preferred. In this study, a vehicle model is developed using MSC.ADAMS, a commercial multibody analysis program, and compared via experiments. FTire is modeled using the results of a tire performance test to obtain the vertical stiffness. A nonlinear damper is modeled by a characteristic experiment. Leaf springs are modeled with beam force elements and consisted to a vehicle model. The vertical force and acceleration response of the wheel are identified when vehicle is passing over a simple bump as well as a sinusoidal road. The developed vehicle model is verified with the results of a full car test.

  • Recently, a number of researchers have produced research and reports in order to forecast more exactly air quality such as particulate matter and odor. However, such research mainly focuses on the atmospheric diffusion models that have been used for the air quality prediction in environmental engineering area. Even though it has various merits, it has some limitation in that it uses very limited spatial attributes such as geographical attributes. Thus, we propose the new approach to forecast an air quality using a deep learning based ensemble model combining temporal and spatial predictor. The temporal predictor employs the RNN LSTM and the spatial predictor is based on the geographically weighted regression model. The ensemble model also uses the RNN LSTM that combines two models with stacking structure. The ensemble model is capable of inferring the air quality of the areas without air quality monitoring station, and even forecasting future air quality. We installed the IoT sensors measuring PM2.5, PM10, H2S, NH3, VOC at the 8 stations in Jeonju in order to gather air quality data. The numerical results showed that our new model has very exact prediction capability with comparison to the real measured data. It implies that the spatial attributes should be considered to more exact air quality prediction.
