  • The magnetic flux leakage(MFL) type nondestructive testing(NDT) method is widely used to detect corrosion, defects and mechanical deformation of the underground gas pipelines. The object pipeline is magnetically saturated by the magnetic system with permanent magnet and yokes. Hall sensors detect the leakage fields in the region of the defect. The defects are sometimes occurred in group. The accuracy of the detecting signals in this defect cluster become lowered because of the complexity of the defect cluster. In this paper, the effects of the multi -defects are analyzed. The detecting signals are computed by 3-dimensional finite element method and compared with real measurement. The results say that, rather than the size of the defects, the effects of the relative position of the multi-defects are very important on the detecting signals.

  • This paper describes numerical analysis of eddy current testing for tube with axi-symmetric defect using boundary element method. In this ECT(Eddy Current Testing) numerical analysis. BEM and FEM are used to compare their characteristics and results of ECT, respectively BEM is easier than FEM to design geometrically complex domain because in case of BEM, domain is divided into segments or elements, but in case of FEM, domain is divided into small finite triangular or quadrilateral elements. For this reason asymmetry defect is used for this BE numerical analysis. As a result, the similar result can be obtained through both numerical analyses, and BEM can be applied to the numerical analysis of ECT.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop defect assessment technology for integrity evaluation of CANDU pressure tubes. In fracture mechanics analysis, three-dimensional and two-dimensional (line-spring model) finite element analyses were performed to obtain the stress intensity factor for axial and circumferential surface cracks. In leak before break (LBB) analysis, heat transfer analyses for through-wall cracks were performed by considering the cooling effect and the LBB application time was computed. It was shown that the analytical results obtained in this study provide less-conservative but accurate solution for defect assessment of CANDU pressure tubes.

  • The NDT(Non-Destructive Testing) is valid for the defect detection of rolling stocks because it can be used to detect the defect in many invisible parts. For example, fatigue cracks are initiated in press fit parts that suffer from fretting fatigue damage such as the wheel seat and the NDT technique can detect those cracks. But the conventional ICFPD method can not apply to detect such cracks in press fit parts of the axle by some technical problems. In this study, we have introduced the new concept ICFPD method that can be applied in press fit parts of the axle. And we have shown the basic techniques of FEM about the new concept ICFPD method.

  • Hot cross wedge rolling process as an incremental forming has many advantages such as the material usage, the short process time, the automatic equipment line and the low forming load. However, it occurs some defects such as the surface groove, the axis warping and the Mannesmann hole. In this paper, the defect of the Mannesmann hole was carried out. Finite element analysis was utilized to reveal the stress distribution, the rotation of the specimen and the change of section profile. Cross wedge rolling experiment was also conducted on the generation of the Mannesmann hole. It was demonstrated according to the spreading angle with respect to the various types of material. In the view point of metal flow, the smaller forming angle and the larger spreading angle increase opportunities of the defect hole generations.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop failure pressure evaluation models, which are applicable to straight pipes and elbows containing an internally wall thinning defect induced by flow-accelerated-corrosion (FAC). In this study, thus, three dimensional finite element (FE) analyses are performed to investigate the dependences of failure pressure of internally wall thinned pipe on the defect shape, the pipe geometry, and the defect location and bend radius of elbow. Also, the existing failure pressure assessment models for externally wall thinned pipes are examined. Based on these, the new models for assessing failure pressure of piping components with an internally wall thinning defect are proposed. Comparison of failure pressure, predicted by proposed models, with FE analysis result shows good agreement regardless of pipe type, defect shape, and defect location and bend radius.

  • The continuum model of transient point defect dynamics to predict the concentrations of interstitial and vacancy is established by estimating expressions for the thermophysical properties of intrinsic point defects. And the point defect distribution in a Czochralski-grown 200 mm silicon crystal and the location of oxidation-induced stacking fault ring(OiSF-ring) created during the cooling of crystals are calculated by using the numerical analysis. The purpose of this paper is to show that his approach lead to predictions that are consistent with experimental results. Predicted point defect distributions by transient point defect dynamic analysis are in good qualitative agreement with experimental data under widely and abruptly varying crystal pull rates when correlated with the position of the OiSF-ring .

  • Pipelines have the highest capacity and are the safest and the least environmentally disruptive way for gas or oil transmission. Recently, failures due to corrosion defects have become of major concern in maintaining pipeline integrity. A number of solutions have been developed for the assessment of remaining strength of corroded pipelines. However, these solutions are known to be dependent on material properties and pipeline geometries. In this paper, a Fitness-For-Purpose type limit load solution for corroded gas pipelines made of the X65 steel is proposed. For this purpose, a series of burst tests with various types of corrosion defects are performed. Finite element simulations are carried out to derive an appropriate failure criterion. And then, further, extensive finite element analyses are performed to obtain the FFP type limit load solution for corroded X65 gas pipelines as a function of defect depth, length and pipeline geometry. And also, a window based computer program far the assessment of corrosion defect, which is named as COPAP(COrroded Pipeline Assessment Program) has been developed on the basis of proposed limit load solution.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a local failure criterion for a wall thinning defect of piping components. For this purpose, a series of tensile tests was performed using several types of simulated specimens with different stress states, including smooth round bar, notched round bar (five different notch radii), and grooved plate (three different groove radii). In addition, finite element (FE) simulations were performed on the simulated specimen tests and the results were compared with the test results. From the comparisons, the equivalent stress and strain corresponding to maximum load and final failure of notched specimens were proposed as failure criteria under tensile load. The criteria were verified by employing them to the estimation of failure of grooved plate specimens that simulate the wall thinning defect. It showed that the proposed criteria accurately estimate the maximum load and final failure of grooved plate specimen tests.

  • A study on optimal shape selection of a mechanical fastening for the repair of crack defect of ROK Air Force F-5 fighter wing was conducted. The crack defect occurred in the spar of the wing, and the technical manual does not specify the repair method. However, ROK Air Force decided to develop a repair technology for this defect in consideration of various logistic conditions. Three repair shapes for the proper repair were devised and the finite element analysis was performed to examine the structural safety of these three connection members. As a result of the structural safety review, two connection members except one were structurally safe with safety margins over zero because the calculated stress values were at or below the yield strength level. Therefore, two connection members were determined to be able to use for repair under the condition that the aircraft operated within the design limit load. The results of this study would be very useful if the same defect occurs in long-term aircraft operated by the ROK Air Force.
