This paper examines the efficacy of the default risk factor in an emerging market context using the Fama-French five-factor model. Our aim is to test whether the Fama-French five-factor model augmented with a default risk factor improves the predictability of returns of portfolios sorted on the firm's characteristics as well as on industry. The default risk factor is constructed by estimating the probability of default using a hybrid version of dynamic panel probit and artificial neural network (ANN) to proxy default risk. This study also provides evidence on the temporal stability of risk premiums obtained using the Fama-MacBeth approach. Using a sample of 3,806 firm-year observations on non-financial listed companies of Pakistan over 2006-2015 we found that the augmented model performed better when tested across size-investment-default sorted portfolios. The investment factor contains some default-related information, but default risk is independently priced and bears a significantly positive risk premium. The risk premiums are also found temporally stable over the full sample and more recent sample period 2010-2015 as evidence by the Fama-MacBeth regressions. The finding suggests that the default risk factor is not a useless factor and due to mispricing, default risk anomaly prevails in the Pakistani equity market.
According to previous studies, the key factor in determining the loan interest rate for shipping companies is the default risk premium. Therefore, this study analyzes the determinants of the risk premium of shipping loans using a multiple linear regression model. With the risk premium as the dependent variable, a total of 10 independent variables are selected, including three factors: loan characteristics, borrower's creditworthiness, and economic situation. Samples are 82 shipping loans supported by Bank A from 2014 to 2022. As a result, borrower's creditworthiness(current ratio, debt ratio, firm age) and economic situation(freight index) affect the risk premium in analysis for all samples. It is found that borrower's creditworthiness has some influence on the risk premium for container ships(current ratio, cash holding ratio, debt ratio, operating income to sales) and bulk carriers(debt ratio, firm age). Market situation affects the risk premium in gas carriers. However, in the model targeting tanker ships, unlike previous studies, all factors have no effect on the risk premium.
Credit derivative is one kind of arrangement which allows one party to transfer, for a premium, the defined credit risk, computed with reference to a notional value, of a reference asset which may or may not owned by one or more other parties. Credit Default Swaps(CDS) have existed since the early 1990s, but its use has become increasingly popular over time. CDS is the fastest growing segment of the privately negotiated derivatives business as many firms depend on it to efficiently manage the financial market risks inherent in economic activities. The diversification function is especially important for active CDS market participants as banks. CDS banks can achieve their loan portfolio diversification which provides them with increased capacity to expand their lending.

This paper estimates the optimum level of reserves in Vietnam based on the approach of reserves' cost-benefit and sovereign risk which is one of developing countries' characteristics. The cost of reserves is the opportunity cost when holding reserves. The benefit of reserves is the loss due to country's default in case that there is no reserves to finance external debt payment. The optimum reserves is found out by minimizing the total of opportunity cost and loss due to country's default with the probability of default. Through the usage of HP Filter method for calculating the loss due to country's default, ARDL regression for the risk premium model and lending rate of VND as proxy for opportunity cost together with the Vietnamese economic data in the period of 2005 - 2017, the empirical results show that the optimum reserves in Vietnam is almost higher than the actual reserves during the research period except the point of Q3/2008 and the last point of research period - Q4/2017. Therefore, Vietnam should continue to increase reserves for safety but Vietnam does not need pushing quickly the speed of increasing reserves. In addition, controlling Vietnamese optimum reserves is necessary to help the actual reserves become reasonable.

The purpose of this paper is to examine a financial distress premium in the emerging market. A risk-return trade-off of negative book equity (NBE) and distress firms is empirically analyzed using data from the Stock Exchange of Thailand. This research employs Ohlson's (1980) bankruptcy model as a measurement of distress risk. The results indicate that distress firms outperform solvent firms in the Thai market and deny distress anomaly often found in the developed market. Fama-Frech (1993) three-factor model and Carhart (1997) four-factor model verify the existence of a distress premium in the Thai capital market. Risk-seeking investors demand greater compensation for bearing risks of distress firms' going concern. This paper provides fresh evidence that default risk is a significant explanatory factor in pricing stocks in the emerging market. Also, this study sheds light on the role of NBE firms in asset pricing. Most studies eliminate NBE firms from their sample. However, NBE firms yield superior average cross-sectional returns, albeit with higher volatility. Investors are rewarded with distress risks associated with NBE firms. The outperformance of NBE firms is statistically significant when compared to the overall market. The NBE premium disappears when factoring size, value, and momentum in time-series analysis.
Benjamin, Lusht, and Shilling(1998) suggested that the level of deposit can be used as a tool to resolve the problem of adverse selection by the leaseholder under the circumstance of information asymmetry. In this respect, this research aims to verify how the level of deposit and monthly rent mitigate the problem of information asymmetry existing in the office market in Seoul. So far, the analysis of the office market in Seoul has been difficult due to the fixed rate of deposit and monthly rent. This research attempts to adopt the concept of occupancy cost, a global standard indicator that would replace the default risk of monthly payment for analyzing the market. As a result of a series of empirical analysis, the lessors tend to add about 9 percent of risk premium to the occupancy cost to hedge against the default risk of monthly payment. It allows for estimating at what extent one should reflect the leaseholder's default risk of monthly payment for operating deposit and monthly rent in the office building lease market.

Among several macroeconomic missteps blamed for the recent global financial crisis including the social problems of income distribution and the lack of proper financial remedies, two of them have received particular attention: the global BOP(Balance of Payment) imbalance and the misguided monetary policy. Such BOP imbalance was blamed for massive foreign exchange investment flows from Asia into the U.S., triggering the financial and real estate bubble in America. The latter refers to the excessively loose monetary policy of the U.S. Federal Reserve, which pushed financial institutions and households into reckless investment behavior in search of higher returns. Given the abuse of certain innovative financial techniques and new investment instruments that have been created in recent decades, both collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) and credit default swaps (CDS) enjoyed a symbiotic and toxic relationship prior to the financial crisis This paper is organized as follows: The first section analyzes the real causes of the recent financial crisis. The second details the role of CDOs and CDS. Then, to identify key determinants of the CDS spreads in an emerging capital market, the sample data of major Korean firms' CDS spreads are used to estimate the risk premium by utilizing the multiple regression analysis. The empirical test result indicates that Korean 3-year treasury bond rate(TYIELD), market to book value ratio(MV/BV), and assets size(INASSETS) are shown to demonstrate statistically significant influences on the changes of the CDS premium for sample firms.
This paper examines the dynamic relationship between fund flow and market risk at the aggregate level and explores whether sudden sharp changes in fund flow (fund run) can cause a systemic risk in the Korean financial markets. We use daily and weekly data and regression and VAR analysis. Main results of the paper are as follows: First, in the stock market, a concurrent and a lagged unexpected fund flows have a positive relationship with market volatility. A positive shock in fund flow predicts an increase in stock market volatility. In the bond market, an unexpected fund flow has a negative relationship with the default risk premium, but a positive relationship with the term premium. And an unexpected fund flow of the money market fund has a negative relationship with the liquidy risk, but the explanatory power is very low. Second, for examining whether changes in fund flow induce a systemic risk, we construct a spillover index based on the forecast error variance decomposition of VAR model. A spillover index represents that how much the shock in fund flow can explain the change of market risk in a market. In general, explanatory powers from spillover indexes are so fluctuant and low. In the stock market, the impact of shocks in fund flow on market risk is relatively high and persistent during the period from the end of 2007 to 2008, which is the subprime-mortgage crisis period. In bond market, since the end of 2008, the impact of shocks in fund flow spreads to default risk continually, while in the money market, such a systematic effect doesn't take place. The persistent patterns of spillover effect appearing around a certain period in the stock market and the bond market suggest that the shock to the unexpected fund flow may increase the market risk and can be a cause of systemic risk in the financial markets. However, summarizing the results of regression and VAR model analysis, and considering the very low explanatory power of spillover index analysis, we can conclude that changes in fund flow have a very limited power in explaining changes in market risk and it is not very likely to induce the systemic risk by a fund run in the Korean financial markets.

This study explains the characteristics of micro-insurance based on the theoretical model of health insurance, such as the low demand of low-income people and the lower demand of higher risk aversion. In particular, these characteristics contradict the existing insurance theory which states that the lower the income, the higher the risk aversion, and the higher the demand for insurance. This study postulates a two-period model focusing on health insurance, contrary to a one-period model assumed in existing studies. As a result, first, we show that the decrease in income leads to a decrease in the preventive effort for illness. Second, we offer a model for micro-insurance in which the individual chooses a partial insurance under an actuarially fair insurance premium, while full insurance is optimal in existing studies. Third, we also show that the insurance demand decreases when the outlook for the future improves. Fourth, we finally show that the lack of trust and default risk of the insurer decrease the insurance demand as risk aversion increases.
