The effects of polymers and fly ash on unconfined compressive strength and freeze-thaw behavior of loose saturated sand

  • Constructions over soft and loose soils are one of the most frequent problems in many parts of the world. Cement and cement-lime mixture have been widely used for decades to improve the strength of these soils with the deep soil mixing method. In this study, to investigate the freeze-thaw effect of sand improved by polymers (i.e., styrene-acrylic-copolymer-SACP, polyvinyl acetate-PVAc and xanthan gum) and fly ash, unconfined compression tests were performed on specimens which were exposed to freeze-thaw cycles and on specimens which were not exposed to freeze-thaw cycles. The laboratory test results concluded that the unconfined compressive strength increased with the increase of polymer ratio and curing time, whereas, the changes on unconfined compressive strength with increase of freeze-thaw cycles were insignificant. The overall evaluation of results has revealed that polymers containing fly ash is a good promise and potential as a candidate for deep soil mixing application.

Predicting sorptivity and freeze-thaw resistance of self-compacting mortar by using deep learning and k-nearest neighbor

  • In this study, deep learning and k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) models were used to estimate the sorptivity and freeze-thaw resistance of self-compacting mortars (SCMs) having binary and ternary blends of mineral admixtures. Twenty-five environment-friendly SCMs were designed as binary and ternary blends of fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF) except for control mixture with only Portland cement (PC). The capillary water absorption and freeze-thaw resistance tests were conducted for 91 days. It was found that the use of SF with FA as ternary blends reduced sorptivity coefficient values compared to the use of FA as binary blends while the presence of FA with SF improved freeze-thaw resistance of SCMs with ternary blends. The input variables used the models for the estimation of sorptivity were defined as PC content, SF content, FA content, sand content, HRWRA, water/cementitious materials (W/C) and freeze-thaw cycles. The input variables used the models for the estimation of sorptivity were selected as PC content, SF content, FA content, sand content, HRWRA, W/C and predefined intervals of the sample in water. The deep learning and k-NN models estimated the durability factor of SCM with 94.43% and 92.55% accuracy and the sorptivity of SCM was estimated with 97.87% and 86.14% accuracy, respectively. This study found that deep learning model estimated the sorptivity and durability factor of SCMs having binary and ternary blends of mineral admixtures higher accuracy than k-NN model.

생쪽잎분말의 염색성 및 저장성 (I) - 동결건조방법 - (Dyeing Properties and Storage Stability of Leaf Powder Prepared from Dyer's Knotweed (I) - by Freeze Drying method -)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the efficacy of leaf powder colorants as substitutes for traditional fresh juice extract dyeing. Three kinds of leaf powder colorants were prepared by freeze drying method with or without deep freezing as pre-treatment: one powder colorant from fresh leaf juice with deep freezing; two kinds of powder colorant from fresh leaves with and without deep freezing. Their dyeing properties and storage stabilities were studied and compared with the traditional fresh juice extract dyeing. The presence of indigo in the powder colorants was confirmed by UV/Visible absorption spectra. They showed absorption peak at 602nm which was same with indigo absorption peak. Dyeing was done at low temperature around 6$^{\circ}C$. All three powder colorants produced B colors on silk fabrics, showing similar color to the one dyed traditionally with fresh juice extract. The powder colorants from leaves gave higher color strength than the powder from leaf juice. The powder colorant prepared from leaves with deep freezing was the most stable for long term storage as its color and color strength were not changed after 360 days. So, this was used for further dyeing to study the effects of concentration and repeat dyeing on color strength and colorfastness. Fastnesses to dry cleaning and rubbing were fairly good above 4 rating. Further study is needed to improve light fastness. It was concluded that the leaf powder colorant with deep freezing could be used as a substitute for traditional juice extract dyeing at all seasons.

  • This paper shows the study on the design and another applications of the spray-freeze dryer for the production of valuable material powders. Powder production and handling has been an integral part of material extracting processing and pharmaceutical processing because of the wide use of oral dosage forms. There are a few commonly used powder preparation methods including mechanical milling, precipitaion, spray drying, freeze drying, and so on. In general, methods available for preparing inhalation powders are limited due to certain inhalation powder's sensitive nature to the processing environments. This is particularly true for preparing dry powder aerosols where the aerodynamic particle size($<5{\mu}m$) and the size distribution are pivotal. Supercritical fluid antisolvent and spray freeze drying have recently emerged as promising techniques for producing powders for use in microcapsulation. However, the aerosol applications of these powders are yet to be explored. The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility of using spray freeze-dried valuable material powders for aerosolization.

  • This paper shows the study on application of the law temperature energy in the deep seawater. Deep, cold seawater has long been recognized as a valuable ocean energy resource. Recently, research and experimentation has been conducted on energy systems using deep seawater: deep seawater air conditioning system, ice-making device, salt and fresh-water manufacturing system and the Spray freeze drying system for extracting valuable material of the deep seawater. They are technically and economically feasible today: once installed, the energy is inexhaustible and there are no adverse environmental impacts. Because of the economy of scale in the air conditioning system, the seawater A/C system is most appropriate for supplying multiple buildings or hotels in a coastal area.

Preparation and Quality of Dried Yam Chip Snack Coated with Ascorbic Acid Cocrystallized Sucrose

  • The specific objectives of this study were to dry yam chips using microwave vacuum drying, freeze drying and hot air drying, then to coat the dried yam chips with ascorbic acid cocrystallized sucrose, and finally to compare the quality of yam chip snack foods with respect to drying and coating characteristics. The microwave vacuum dried sample showed the highest drying rates and much less surface damage than the hot air dried one did. The shape and color of the microwave vacuum dried/coated sample were allocated between those of the freeze dried/coated sample and the hot air dried/coated sample. The freeze dried/coated sample scored excessively low in organoleptic hardness and chewiness to be suitable as a snack. The hot air dried/coated sample was too deep in color, wrinkled, excessively high in organoleptic hardness and chewiness, and excessively low in mouthfeeling. Therefore, the microwave vacuum dried/coated sample presented the best overall attributes as a snack, with respect to organoleptic characteristics, shape, color, and drying rates.

  • There is a deep and useful connection between thermodynamics (the behavior of systems with many degrees of freedom in thermal equilibrium at a finite temperature) and combinational or continuous optimization (finding the minimum of a given multiparameter function). At the heart of the method of simulated annealing is an analogy with the way that liquids freeze and crystallize, or metals cool and anneal. This paper provides a detailed description of simulated annealing. Although computationaly intensive, when it is carefully implemented, simulated annealing is found to give superior results to more traditional methods of nonlinear optimization.

한라산 아고산대의 동결기 기온 및 지온변화 (Variationsin Air and Ground Temperatures During a Frozen Season in the Subalpine Zone of Mt. Halla)

  • 한라산 아고산대 표고 1,710m 지점의 나지에서 동결기를 중심으로 212일간 지상 55cm 높이의 기온과 지중 2cm, 10cm 및 20cm 깊이의 지온을 관측하여 주빙하성 지형형성환경을 조사하였다. 관측기간의 평균기온은 $-0.1^{\circ}C$이며, 깊이별 평균지온은 2cm $1.8^{\circ}C$, 10cm $2.6^{\circ}C$, 20cm $3.2^{\circ}C$이다. 2cm 깊이에서는 1월부터 3월까지 영하의 월평균지온이 관측되었으나 다른 깊이에서는 출현하지 않았다. 동결융해 사이클의 출현횟수는 55cm 높이에서 72회인 반면 지중 2cm 깊이에서 17회, 10cm 깊이에서 8회, 20cm 깊이에서 3회로 지중으로 내려가면서 크게 감소하였다. 지상과 2cm 깊이에서의 동결융해는 일일 주기가 탁월한 반면 10cm와 20cm 깊이에서는 수일 주기로 출현하였다. 또한 2cm 깊이에서 12월 중순~4월 중순, 10cm 깊이에서 2월 말~4월 중순, 20cm 깊이에서 4월 초순~중순에 일평균지온이 대체로 $0^{\circ}C$ 밑으로 내려가는 계절적 동결기가 출현하였다. 관측지점은 1월부터 4월 초순까지 55cm 이상의 눈으로 덮여 있다가 4월 16일에 전부 사라졌다. 12월 하순 2cm 깊이에 형성된 계절적 동토층은 적설의 단열효과로 인하여 3월 말~4월 초에 10cm 깊이에 도달하였다. 4월 7일부터 14일까지 깊이 20cm를 넘는 최대동결심을 보이나 이후 급속하게 융해되어 17일 이후 계절적 동토층은 출현하지 않았다. 융해진행기에도 잔설이 남아 있는 관측지점에는 융해진행기보다 동결진행기에 주빙하 프로세스가 더 탁월하게 진행되며, 일주기성 동결융해 사이클의 발생심도와 최대동결심을 고려하면 한라산 아고산대의 사면물질이동은 주로 동상포행에 의해 발생한다.

벼 흰빛잎마름병균의 균주보관에 따른 병원성 및 집락변이현상 (Preservation Methods of Xanthomonas campestris pv. oryzae in Relation to Virulence and Colony-Type Variation)

  • 벼흰빛잎마름병균의 균주를 효과적으로 보관하기 위하여 동결건조, 동결, 액체파라핀, 살균수, 계대배양등의 방법을 사용하여 생존율과 병원성유지 정도를 4개월에 걸쳐 조사하였다. 실험결과 $10\%$ sucrose와 $1\%$ gelatin을 함유한 현탁액에서 가장 높은 생존율을 나타냈으며 병원성은 $2\%$ dextrin, $0.5\%$ ascorbic acid, $0.5\%$ ammonium chloride, $0.5\%$ tguiyrea, $0.85\%$ NaCl 등을 함유한 현탁액에서 가장 잘 유지되었다. 계대배양한 균주는 병원성이 약화되었다. 거친집락형은 동결건조 또는 동결과정에서 모두 나타났으며 이는 정상집락에 반해 주름진 집락모습과 사상형이었다. 거친집락형은 병원성이 매우 약하였으며, 탄소원 요구도가 다양하였으므로 동결건조 과정에서 대사작용의 저해가 일어난 것으로 추측되었다.

Phishing Attack Detection Using Deep Learning

  • This paper proposes a technique for detecting a significant threat that attempts to get sensitive and confidential information such as usernames, passwords, credit card information, and more to target an individual or organization. By definition, a phishing attack happens when malicious people pose as trusted entities to fraudulently obtain user data. Phishing is classified as a type of social engineering attack. For a phishing attack to happen, a victim must be convinced to open an email or a direct message [1]. The email or direct message will contain a link that the victim will be required to click on. The aim of the attack is usually to install malicious software or to freeze a system. In other instances, the attackers will threaten to reveal sensitive information obtained from the victim. Phishing attacks can have devastating effects on the victim. Sensitive and confidential information can find its way into the hands of malicious people. Another devastating effect of phishing attacks is identity theft [1]. Attackers may impersonate the victim to make unauthorized purchases. Victims also complain of loss of funds when attackers access their credit card information. The proposed method has two major subsystems: (1) Data collection: different websites have been collected as a big data corresponding to normal and phishing dataset, and (2) distributed detection system: different artificial algorithms are used: a neural network algorithm and machine learning. The Amazon cloud was used for running the cluster with different cores of machines. The experiment results of the proposed system achieved very good accuracy and detection rate as well.
