The G-class cement is usually used for geothermal well grouting to protect a steel casing which is equipped in a geothermal well to transfer geothermal water from deep subsurface to ground surface. In geothermal grouting process, obtaining appropriate fluidity is extremely important in order to fill cement grout flawlessly. In this paper, a series of the V-funnel and Slump Flow test was performed on both of the Portland cement and the G-class cement in order to compare fluidity and filling ability of those kind of cements. In the result of V-funnel test, the fluidity of G-class cement was evaluated much better than the Portland cement at the water/cement ratio of 0.8. In the case of Slump Flow test, the fluidity of G- class cement was estimated slightly better than the Portland cement at both the water/cement ratio of 0.55 and 0.8. Even though the initial fluidity and filling ability of G-class cement were relatively higher than the Portland cement, the results could be considerably changed with time. The results show that the fluidity and filling ability for geothermal well cementation can be properly controlled with water content and additives for adverse geothermal well environment.

Spent fuels from nuclear power plants, as well as high-level radioactive waste from the recycling of spent fuels, should be safely isolated from human environment for an extremely long time. Recently, meaningful studies on the development of deep borehole radioactive waste disposal system in 3-5 km depth have been carried out in USA and some countries in Europe, due to great advance in deep borehole drilling technology. In this paper, domestic deep geoenvironmental characteristics are preliminarily investigated to analyze the applicability of deep borehole disposal technology in Korea. To do this, state-of-the art technologies in USA and some countries in Europe are reviewed, and geological and geothermal data from the deep boreholes for geothermal usage are analyzed. Based on the results on the crystalline rock depth, the geothermal gradient and the spent fuel types generated in Korea, a preliminary deep borehole concept including disposal canister and sealing system, is suggested.
In order to generate electricity from geothermal energy for non-volcanic region, the concept of enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is introduced which forms an artificial reservoir by injecting high pressure fluid to 5 km deep and circulating geothermal fluid through the reservoir. Demonstration studies have been conducted in various countries and regions for determining the feasibility of EGS. In this technical note, experiences, errors, and implications of EGS demonstration projects in UK Rosemanowes and Australia Cooper Basin which have been carried out since 2002 are introduced to be used for the EGS demonstration project in Korea.
Hydrogeochemistry of deep geothermal water (temperature: $42.2-47.9^{\circ}C$) at Heunghae, Pohang was evaluated using core logging, temperature and electrical conductivity (EC) logging before and after pumping tests, chemical analysis of geothermal water with depth, and observation of water quality variations during pumping tests. The geology of the area is composed of highly fractured marine sedimentary rocks. The hydrogeochemistry of geothermal water varies with drilling depth, distance from the coast, and pumping duration. According to the temperature and EC variations during 4 times of pumping tests, main aquifer of the area is considered as the fractured zones (540 to 900 m) developed in rhyolitic rocks. The high content of Na and $HCO_3$ in geothermal water can be explained by the inflow of deep groundwater from inland regulated by dissolution of silicates and carbonates. High TDS, Na and Cl concentrations indicate that the geothermal water was also strongly affected by seawater. The molar ratios of Na:Cl ($0.88{\sim}2.14$) and Br:Cl ($21.0{\sim}24.9{\times}10^{-4}$) deviate from those of seawater (0.84 and $34.7{\times}10^{-4}$, respectively), suggesting that water-rock interaction also plays an important role in the formation of water quality.
In this case study, I examined the microseismic safety management system of Deep Heat Mining Basel (DHMB) as EGS Geothermal Project which was conducted in Basel, Switzerland. EGS Geothermal Power projects which require induced seismic event by stimulation for creation of EGS geothermal reservoir have to be controlled pressure and flow rate of stimulation by establishment of microseismic safety management system. Traffic light system and Communication response procedure of DHMB project to respond step by step corresponding microseismic event intensity through continuous monitoring during stimulation period have been managed and established in advance of stimulation. However, the project was discontinued because of an earthquake to occur larger than expected one due to post-injection seismicity occurring in the geothermal reservoir after completion of injection for stimulation. The result of post analysis, Real-time traffic light system was verified to need a establishment of new microseismic safe management system to be considered post-injection seismicity phenomenon.

The Heat exchanger for deep geothermal system is very important to enhance the efficiency of the system. The co-axial heat exchanger is used due to the limitation of digging space. The heat transfer on the external surface of outer pipe should be high to receive a large amount of heat from the ground. However, the inner pipe should be insulated to reduce the heat loss and increase the temperature of discharge water. This study made experiment apparatus to describe the co-axial heat exchanger and measure the heat transfer coefficients on the internal and external surface. And the pin-fin was designed and fixed on the internal surface to increase the efficiency of heat exchanger. Finally, we calculated the temperature of discharge water using the heat transfer circuit of co-axial heat exchanger and heat transfer coefficient which from experimental results. The water temperature was reached the ground temperature at -500 m and following the ground temperature. When the water return to the ground surface, the water temperature was decreased due to heat loss. As the pin-fin case, the heat transfer coefficient on the internal surface was decreased by 30% and it mean that the pin-fin help to insulate the inner pipe. However, the discharge water temperature did not change although pin-fin fixed on the inner pipe.
Various geophysical well logs have been made along the four deep wells in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. The primary focus of geophysical well loggings was to improve understanding the subsurface geologic structure, to evaluate in situ physical properties, and to estimate aquifer production zones using fluid temperature and conductivity gradient logs. Especially natural gamma logs interpreted with core logs of borehole BH-1 were useful to discriminate the lithology and to determine the lithologic sequences and boundaries consisting of semi-consolidated Tertiary sediments and intrusive rocks such as basic dyke and Cretaceous sediments. Cross-plot of physical properties inferred from geophysical well logs were used to identify rock types such as Cretaceous sandstone and mudstone, Tertiary sediments, rhyolite, and basic dyke. The temperature log indicated $82.51^{\circ}C$ at the depth of 1,981.3 meters in borehole BH-4. However, considering the temperature of borehole BH-2 measured under stable condition, we expect the temperature at the depth in borehole BH-4, if it is measured in stable condition, to be about 5 or $6^{\circ}C$ higher. Several permeable fractures also have been identified from temperature and conductivity gradient logs, and cutting logs.
A detailed geothermal characteristics survey with numerical simulations of the heat transfer in a site for ground source heat pump system is necessary for deploying a shallow geothermal utilization system. Density, specific heat, thermal diffusivity, and thermal conductivity are measured on 91 core samples from a 300 m deep borehole in KIGAM(Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources). The heat flow is estimated from the thermal gradient and average thermal conductivity and the correlation between fracture system and hydraulic conductivity is analyzed. From the obtained ground information of the study site the performance of the ground heat pump system can be analyzed with some detailed numerical simulations for seasonal heat pump operation skill and optimal system design techniques.

Self-potential (SP) survey was carried out at Pohang geothermal field. SP measurement showed clear positive anomaly at northern part of the test wells, which can be a up-flow zone of the deep geothermal water due to electrokinetic potential generated by hydrothermal circulation. To give a clearer image of the fluid flow pattern around the test wells, a two-dimensional numerical simulation was applied to construct a numerical block model of the fluid flow system based on SP and magnetotelluric survey results. The result suggests existence of two high permeability zones including the main manifestation area in the northern part of the test wells.
Hydrogeochemical and environmental isotope studies were undertaken for various kinds of water samples collected in 1995-1996 from the Bugok geothermal area. Physicochemical data indicate the occurrence of three distinct groups of natural water: Group I ($Na-S0_4$ type water with high temperatures up to $77^{\circ}C$, occurring from the central part of the geothermal area), Group II (warm $Na-HCO_{3}-SO_{4}$ type water, occurring from peripheral sites), Group III ($Ca-HCO_3$ type water, occurring as surface waters and/or shallow cold groundwaters). The Group I waters are further divided into two SUbtypes: Subgroup Ia and Subgroup lb. The general order of increasing degrees of hydrogeochemical evolution (due to the degrees of water-rock interaction) is: Group III$\rightarrow$Group II$\rightarrow$Group I. The Group II and III waters show smaller degrees of interaction with rocks (largely calcite and Na-plagioclase), whereas the Group I waters record the stronger interaction with plagioclase, K-feldspar, mica, chlorite and pyrite. The concentration and sulfur isotope composition of dissolved sulfate appear as a key parameter to understand the origin and evolution of geothermal waters. The sulfate was derived not only from oxidation of sedimentary pyrites in surrounding rocks (especially for the Subgroup Ib waters) but also from magmatic hydrothermal pyrites occurring in restricted fracture channels which extend down to a deep geothermal reservoir (typically for the Subgroup Ia waters). It is shown that the applicability of alkaliion geothermometer calculations for these waters is hampered by several processes (especially the mixing with Mg-rich near-surface waters) that modify the chemical composition. However, the multi-component mineral/water equilibria calculation and available fluid inclusion data indicate that geothermal waters of the Bugok area reach temperatures around $125^{\circ}C$ at deep geothermal reservoir (possibly a cooling pluton). Environmental isotope data (oxygen-18, deuterium and tritium) indicate the origin of all groups of waters from diverse meteoric waters. The Subgroup Ia waters are typically lower in O-H isotope values and tritium content, indicating their derivation from distinct meteoric waters. Combined with tritium isotope data, the Subgroup Ia waters likely represent the older (at least 45 years old) meteoric waters circuated down to the deep geothermal reservoir and record the lesser degrees of mixing with near-surface waters. We propose a model for the genesis and evolution of sulfate-rich geothermal waters.
