Recent years in particular in Korea see intensive interests in a deep geothermal engineering and its application in different uses as far as from direct uses to power generation sectors, that are achieved by harnessing hot energy sources from the earth. For instance widespread interest has been generated because the geothermal energy is the source that one extracts it for more than 20 hours per day and for about 30 years of an operation of the plant, which enables to give base load as for heating as well as an electric generation. In retrospect, shallow geothermal energy using heat pumps is commonplace in Korea while the deep geothermal is in the early stage of the development. Geothermal energies in view of the way of extracting heat are mainly categorized into several types such as a single well system, a hydrothermal system, an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) etc. In this talk, this speaker focuses on the thermo-fluid engineering of the single well system by introducing the modeling in order to harness hot fluid that is thermally balanced with the fluid of an injection well, which provides a challenge to assess the life time of the well. To avoid the loss of the temperature in producing the hot fluid, a specialized pipe or a borehole heat exchanger has been designed, and its concept is introduced. On the other hand, a binary system or an organic Rankine cycle, which provides the methodology to convert the heat into an electricity, is briefly introduced. Some experimental results of the binary system which has been constructed in our lab will be presented. Lastly as for the future direction, some comments for the industrialization of the deep geothermal energy in this country will be discussed.
The thermodynamic performance of ocean thermal energy conversion with 1 kg/s geothermal water flow rate as a heat source was evaluated to obtain the basic data for the optimal design of cycle with respect to the classification of the working fluid. The basic thermodynamic model for cycle is rankine cycle and the geothermal water and deep seawater were adapted for the heat source of evaporator and condenser, respectively. R245fa, R134a are better to use as a working fluid than others in view of the use of geothermal water. It is important to select the proper working fluid to operate the ocean thermal energy conversion. So, this paper can be used as the basic data for the design of ocean thermal energy conversion with geothermal water and deep seawater.

While greenhouses have been utilized as a sustainable alternative to traditional soil farming, they are often powered by diesel boilers that necessitate vast amounts of non-renewable energy and emit toxic fumes. Thus, geothermal heat pumps have been proposed as a more energy-efficient substitution for diesel boilers. Currently, most horticultural facilities in the United States use shallow geothermal systems, and are often equipped with horizontal underground heat exchangers as well as heat pump equipment. These shallow geothermal systems require a large drilling site and heat pump to function, which results in high maintenance costs. The heat pump itself consumes a large amount of power, which degrades system performance. Conversely, high temperatures can be attained within a single borehole in deep geothermal vertical closing systems without using a heat pump. This setup can dramatically reduce the power consumption and improve system performance. In this study, we have modeled a circulation simulator after the circulation systems in deep geothermal facilities to analyze a 2000-meter borehole in Naju-Sanpo-myeon. The simulator is operated by manipulating various putative parameters affecting system performance to analyze the system's coefficient of performance.
This paper summarizes the history of geothermal research in Korea since 1920s and also describes the present status of research on heat flow, origin of thermal waters and geothermal exploitation and utilization. Geothermal research in Korea has been mainly related with hot spring investigation until 1970s. 1t was not until 1980s before heat flow study became continuous by research institute and academia and first nation-scale geothermal gradient map and heat flow map were published in 1996. Also in 1990s, geochemical isotope analysis of Korean hot spring waters and measurements of heat production rate of some granite bodies were made. Attempts to develop and utilize the deep geothermal water has been tried from early 1990s but field scale exploitations for geothermal water was activated in 2000s. Considering recent increase of demands on both deep and shallow geothermal energy utilization, outlook on future goethermal research and development is encouraging.
In various underground research projects such as energy storage and development and radioactive waste disposal targeting deep underground, the characteristics of permeable rock fractures that serve as major pathway of groundwater flow in deep rock aquifer are considered as an important evaluation factor in the design, construction, and operation of research facilities. In Korea, there is little research and database on the location and hydraulic characteristics of permeable rock fractures and the pattern of groundwater flow patterns that may occur between fractures in deep rock boreholes. In this paper, the hydraulic characteristics of permeable rock fractures in deep rock aquifer were evaluated through the analysis of geothermal gradient and pumping test data. First, the deep geothermal distribution was identified through temperature logging, and the geothermal gradient was obtained through linear regression analysis using temperature data by depth. In addition, the hydraulic characteristics of the fractured rock were analyzed using outflow temperature obtained from pumping tests. Ultimately, the potential location and hydraulic characteristics of permeable rock fractures, as well as groundwater flow within the boreholes, were evaluated by integrating and analyzing the geophysical logging and hydraulic testing data. The process and results of the evaluation of deep permeable rock fractures proposed in this study are expected to serve as foundational data for the successful implementation of underground research projects targeting deep rock aquifers.
This study discusses challenges of running expandable profile liners (EPLs) to isolate trouble zones in directional section of a deep well, and summary the expandable profile liner technology (EPLT) field trial experience. Technically, the trial result reveals that it is feasible to apply the EPLT solving lost-circulation control problem and wellbore instability in the deep directional section. Propose schemes for optimizing the EPLT operation procedure to break through the existing bottleneck of EPLT in the deep directional section. Better-performing transition joints are developed to improve EPL string reliability in high borehole curvature section. High-performing and reliable expanders reduce the number of trips, offer excellent mechanical shaping efficiency, simplify the EPLT operation procedure. Application of the expansion and repair integrated tool could minimize the risk of insufficient expansion and increase the operational length of the EPL string. The new welding process and integrated automatic welding equipment improve the welding quality and EPL string structural integrity. These optimization schemes and recent new advancements in EPLT can bring significant economic benefits and promote the application of EPLT to meet future challenges.

The volcanic type of geothermal water is linked intimately to active or potentially active volcanoes and takes place near the plate boundaries. In contrast to the volcanic type, the geothermal water in Korea has a non-volcanic origin. Korea's geothermal water is classified into the residual magma (RM) type and deep groundwater (DG) type according to the criterion of $35^{\circ}C$. This study reviewed the relationship between the physical and chemical features of the 281 geothermal water sources in South Korea in terms of the specific capacity, water temperature, and chemical compositions of two different basements (igneous rock and metamorphic rock) as well as the geological structures. According to the spatial relationship between the geothermal holes and geological faults, the length of the major fault is considered a key parameter determining the movement to a deeper place and the temperature of geothermal water. A negligible relationship between the specific capacity (Q/s) and temperature was found for both the RM type and DG type with the greater specific capacities of the RM- and DG-igneous types than the RM- and DG-metamorphic types. No relationship was observed between Q/s and the chemical constituents ($K^+$, $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Cl^-$, $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $HCO_3{^-}$, and $SiO_2$) in the DG-igneous and DG-metamorphic types. Furthermore, weak relationship between temperature and chemical constituents was found for both the RM type and DG type.
KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) launched a new project to develop the low-temperature geothermal water in the area showing high geothermal anomaly, north of Pohang city, for large-scale space heating. Surface geologic and geophysical surveys including Landsat 1M image analysis, gravity, magnetic, Magnetotelluric (MT) and controlled-source audio-frequency MT (CSAMT), and self-potential (SP) methods have been conducted and the possible fracture zone was found that would serve as deeply connected geothermal water conduit. In 2004, two test wells of 1.1km and 1.5km depths have been drilled and various kinds of borehole survey including geophysical logging, pumping test, SP monitoring, core logging and sample analysis have followed. Temperature of geothermal water at the bottom of 1.5km borehole reached over $70^{\circ}C$ and the pumping test showed that the reservoir contained huge amount of geothermal water. Drilling for the production well of 2 km depth is on going. After test utilization and the feasibility study, geothermal water developed from the production well is going to be provided to nearby apartments.
The objectives of this study were to test geothermal conductivity (k), water velocity, water quantity, and pipe pressure from a ground heat exchanger in the field, and then to analyze these data in relation to the effectiveness and economical efficiency for application of geothermal energy. After installation of the apparatus required for field tests, geothermal conductivity values were obtained from three different cases (second, third, and fourth). The k values of the second case (506 m depth) and third case (151 m depth) are approximately 2.9 and 2.8, respectively. The k value of the fourth case (506 m depth, double pipe) is 2.5, which is similar to the second and third cases. This result indicates that hole depth is a critical factor for geothermal applications. Analysis of the field data (k, water velocity, water quantity, and pipe pressure) reveals that a single geothermal system at 506 m depth is more economically efficient than three geothermal systems at depths intervals of 151 m. Although it is more expensive to install a geothermal system at 506 m depth than at 151 m depth, test results showed that the geothermal system of the fourth case (506 m, double pipe) is more economically efficient than the system at 151 m depth. Considering the optional cost of maintenance, which is a non-operational expense, the geothermal system of the fourth case is economically efficient. Large cities and areas with high land prices should make greater use of geothermal energy.
This study build finite element analysis (FEA) models describing the bending events of coiled tubing (CT) at the wellhead and trips into the hole, accurately provide the state of stress and strain while the CT is in service. The bending moment and axial force history curves are used as loads and boundary conditions in the diametrical growth models to ensure consistency with the actual working conditions in field operations. The simulation diametrical growth results in this study are more accurate and reasonable. Analysis the factors influencing fatigue and diametrical growth shows that the internal pressure has a first-order influence on fatigue, followed by the radius of the guide arch, reel and the CT diameter. As the number of trip cycles increase, fatigue damage, residual stress and strain cumulatively increase, until CT failure occurs. Significant residual stresses remain in the CT cross-section, and the CT exhibits a residual curvature, the initial residual bending configuration of CT under wellbore constraints, after running into the hole, is sinusoidal. The residual stresses and residual bending configuration significantly decrease the buckling load, making the buckling and buckling release of CT in the downhole an elastic-plastic process, exacerbating the helical lockup. The conclusions drawn in this study will improve CT models and contribute to the operational and economic success of CT services.
