  • This paper describes the equivalent dipole modeling method utilizing a singular value decomposition technique from analysis data by the FNREMUS Detailled Modeller software based on BEM which can predict the underwater electric field signal due to a galvanic corrosion phenomenon on a naval vessel. The proposed dipole modeling method was successfully verified in good agreement with predicted BEM data at 30 m depths through the comparison of average differences. The proposed dipole modelling method can be effectively used in the prediction and analysis of static electric field signature distributions generated from a naval vessel at any different depths.

  • Recent developments in underwater image recognition methods have received large attention by the ocean engineering researchers. In this paper, an improved bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition (BEMD) approach is employed to decompose the given underwater image into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and residual. We developed a joint algorithm based on BEMD and Canny operator to extract multi-pixel edge features at multiple scales in IMFs sub-images. So the multiple pixel edge extraction is an advantage of our approach; the other contribution of this method is the realization of the bi-dimensional sifting process, which is realized utilizing regional-based operators to detect local extreme points and constructing radial basis function for curve surface interpolation. The performance of the multi-pixel edge extraction algorithm for processing underwater image is demonstrated in the contrast experiment with both the proposed method and the phase congruency edge detection.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that applies matrix decomposition technique to the connection of actuator capabilities of each robot to object acceleration limits for multiple cooperative robot systems. The robot systems under consideration are composed of several robot manipulators and each robot contacts a single object to carry the object while satisfying the constraints described in kinematics as well as dynamics. By manipulating kinematic and dynamic equations of both robots and objects, we at first derive a matrix relating joint torques with object acceleration, manipulate the null space of the matrix, and then we decompose the matrix into three parts representing indeterminancy, connectivity, and redundancy. With the decomposed matrix we derive the boundaries of object accelerations from given joint actuators. To show the validity of the proposed method some examples are given in which the results can be expected by intuitive observation.

  • The design cycle associated with large engineering systems requires an initial decomposition of the complex system into design processes which are coupled through the transference of output data. Some of these design processes may be grouped into iterative subcycles. In analyzing or optimizing such a coupled system, it is essential to determine the best order of the processes within these subcycles to reduce design cycle time and cost. This is accomplished by decomposing large multidisciplinary problems into several multidisciplinary analysis subsystems (MDASS) and processing it in parallel. This paper proposes new strategy for parallel decomposition of multidisciplinary problems to improve design efficiency by using the multiple objective genetic algorithm (MOGA), and a sample test case is presented to show the effects of optimizing the sequence with MOGA.

  • SThis paper proposes a new dispatch scheduling algorithm in interconnected regional system operations. The dispatch scheduling formulated as mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem can efficiently be computed by generalized Benders decomposition (GBD) algorithm. GBD guarantees adequate computation speed and solution convergency since it decomposes a primal problem into a master problem and subproblems for simplicity. In addition, the inter-temporal optimal power flow (OPF) subproblem of the dispatch scheduling problem is comprised of various variables and constraints considering time-continuity and it makes the inter-temporal OPF complex due to increased dimensions of the optimization problem. In this paper, regional decomposition technique based on auxiliary problem principle (APP) algorithm is introduced to obtain efficient inter-temporal OPF solution through the parallel implementation. In addition, it can find the most economic dispatch schedule incorporating power transaction without private information open. Therefore, it can be expanded as an efficient dispatch scheduling model for interconnected system operation.

  • This paper describes two algorithms for technology mapping of multiple output functions into interesting and pupular FPGAs(Field Programmable Gate Array) that use look-yp table memories. For improvement of technology mapping for FPGA, we use the functional decompoition method for multiple output functions. Two algorithms are proposed. The one is the Roth-Karpalgorithm extended for multiple output functions. The other is the efficient algorithm which looks for common decomposition functions through the decomposition procedure. The cost function is used to minimize the number of CLBs and nets and to improve performance of the network. Finally we compare our new algorithm with previous logic design technique. Experimental resutls show sigificant reduction in the number of CLBs and nets.

  • In sensitivity analysis, semi-analytical method(SAM) reveals severe inaccuracy problem when relatively large rigid body motions are identified for individual elements. Recently such errors of SAM resulted by the finite difference scheme have been improved by the separation of rigid body mode. But the eigenvalue should be obtained first before the sensitivity analysis is performed and it takes much time in the case that large system is considered. In the present study, by constructing a reduced one from the original system, iterative method combined with mode decomposition technique is proposed to compute reliable semi-analytical design sensitivities. The sensitivity analysis is performed by the eigenvector acquired from the reduced system. The error of SAM caused by difference scheme is alleviated by Von Neumann series approximation.

  • In this paper, a method for face recognition based on the wavelet packet decomposition is proposed. In the proposed method, the input image is decomposed by the 2-level wavelet packet transformation and then the face areas are defined by the Integral Projection technique applied to each of the 1-level subband images, HL and LH. After the defined face areas are divided into three areas, called top, bottom, and border, the mean and the variance of the three areas of the approximation image are computed, and the variance of the single predetermined face area for the rest of 15 detail images, from which the feature vectors of statistical measure are extracted. In this paper we use the wavelet packet decomposition, a generalization of the classical wavelet decomposition, to obtain its richer signal analysis features such as discontinuity in higher derivatives, self-similarity, etc. And we have shown that even with very simple statistical features such as mean values and variance we can make an excellent basis for face classification, if an appropriate probability distance is used.

  • The proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) is used to the modal analysis of microcantilever of dynamic mode atomic force microscopy(AFM). The proper orthogonal modes(POM) are extracted from vibrating signals of microcantilever when it resonates and taps the sample. We present recent ideas based on POD and detailed experiments that yield new perspectives into the microscale structures. The linearized modeling technique based on POD is very useful to show the principal characteristics of the complex dynamic responses.
