  • For providing a basic data concerning with a fishing deck layout design of a trawler the authors conducted the video observations about the working activities of crews on the deck in the different layout of two Korean coastal large stern trawlers (gross tonnage: 139). The winch of the trawler-A was installed on the aft of the fishing deck and the trawler-B, on the forward of the fishing deck. The work and activities of the deck hands on both trawlers were observed using the CCD (charge coupled device) camera installed on each trawler's deck for one month from August 3, 2010. The video data was analyzed by the hierarchical task analysis (HTA) method. In results, numbers of tasks to require deck hands during the hauling net and the casting net were 25 and 28 for the trawler-A and 27 and 48 for the trawler-B, respectively. The working processes were represented a same in both of the trawlers. Location for controlling the deck machineries, the location installed trawl winch, kinds of deck machineries, crew's custom for using deck machineries were the factor affecting to the number of the task. In the case of the improvement suggested in the results is carried out, the reduction percentages of the number of task in the trawler-A and trawler-B were estimated as 24.5% and 51.3%, respectively. Through this study it was found that the quantitative analysis is possible for the work processes, work methods and the work contents in the trawler. Also the suggestion for improving the fishing deck layout design of the trawler was possible by finding out the factors increasing the number of tasks and removing the tasks. We expect that the results of this paper are used as a basic data for designing the layout of deck machineries in the trawler in the future.

  • The purpose of this paper is the assessment of the capacity of the reinforced concrete (RC) elements of an arch bridge when they are subjected to contact and near-contact explosive charges of various amounts, and the estimation of the critical charges for these components. The bridge considered is the Tenza Viaduct, a decommissioned structure south of Naples, Italy. Its primary elements, deck, piers and arches were analyzed. The evaluation was accomplished via numerical analyses that made possible to obtain the elements dynamic response when they are exposed to blast loading conditions. To evaluate the member's capacities, failure criteria for deck, piers and arches were proposed based on concrete damage parameters. Additionally, curves relating the explosive charge to the residual capacity and to damage level of the elements were also developed. The results of this work were taken into account to investigate the progressive collapse of the global structure.

  • A drill & blasting method using explosives is the most efficient way to break the rock in the urban projects. However, the blasting method cause vibration, noise and fly-rock as blast pollutions so that blasting wroks are restricted by adjacent structures such as apartment and residence houses. To conduct blasting works at near structures, the numbers of blast-holes a blast and the size of the blast are limited by kinds of detonators and initiation methods. So, the production rate is reduced and the construction period should be increased. Therefore, in this case the deck-charge blasting methods using available detonators in domestic market were designed and evaluated in order to confirm the application possibilities in specific urban sites.

  • A TBM launching shaft in DTL2 Contract 915 site is located in a typical hard Bukit Timah granite formation and lots of blasting work is required for shaft sinking. The original blast design used the electric detonator and ANFO blasts consisting of 30 holes per one blast with 1.5 m depth of drilling hole. However, significant delay of work and poor progress were expected due to the limitation of the number of blasting hole and strict vibration regulation on retaining systems. To overcome such constraints, an efficient new blasting method which can improve productivity and satisfy vibration limit was required. The revised blast design, using triple-deck blasts with electronic detonators and cartridge emulsion explosives, gives better construction performance and can reduce construction time. Such a new blasting technique can be effectively used for similar underground projects in the future where the volume of rock blasting is significant.

  • This paper introduces the combination of two blasting methods applied to reduce blast-vibration and increase blast efficiency. NDC (New Deck Charge) blasting method using air deck effect with separation tube made of paper was effective to reduce blast-vibration, while blast efficiency was decreased a little in the bottom of a blasthole. Wide Space blasting method has an advantage to control the fragmentation and to increase blast efficiency over conventional blasting methods. In this study new blasting method combining NDC blasting method and Wide Space blasting method was applied to the field, it was confirmed to reduce blast-vibration and increase blast efficiency. It is expected to make useful blasting method to cover the public complaints and to shorten construction time by accumulating blasting data using new method with various conditions.

  • This study introduces a suggested underwater blasting method in contrast with conventional underwater blasting methods which adopt the drilling and charging procedures by divers. A structural underwater charging system makes it possible to drill into underwater bedrock and charge explosives on the deck of barge ship. The applicability and effectiveness of the suggested method was experimentally approved by comparing with a kind of underwater charging system as a conventional underwater blasting method.

  • The purpose of this research was to develop a rapid setting cement latex modified concrete (RSLMC) for bridge deck repairing and overlaying. The main experimental variables were latex contents, antifoamer contents and water-cement ratioes. The workability, strength development and permeability were measured as responses. The results showed that latex content increased the slump and reduced the unit water required for same workability. The air contents were measured as 8.0∼9.0% and 2.0∼3.0% without antifoamer and with 1.6∼3.2% of antifoamer, respectively. This resulted in the increment of compressive strength development by 10∼20 %. The flexural strength of RSLMC increased greatly as the latex content increased, but not in compressive strength. The compressive strength and flexural strength developed enough for opening the overlayed RSLMC to the traffic after 3 hours of RSLMC placement. The permeability of RSLMC was evaluated as negligible due to its very low charge passed. Thus, RSLMC could be used at repairing or overlaying the concrete bridge deck at fast-track job sites.
