  • Recently, in the total railroad construction field, concrete slab tracks have been adapted in place of ballast tracks. Because ballast tracks need frequent maintenance and are difficult to handle due to increasing maintenance costs, eventually concrete slab tracks were selected as an alternative. However, owing to the hydration heat reactions and temperature-affected shrinkage of the concrete, a variety of studies to solve maintenance problems related to concrete slab tracks are underway. This study analyzed characteristics of TQI values evaluating track irregularity, investigated the relationship between crack progress and TQI, and then evaluated the correlation between the two values. Through our analysis, we found that there is a need to supplement the problems of the current method and develop a track evaluation index which takes cracking into account. We also concluded that TQI is the main decision-making tool in track maintenance.

  • In the field of maintenance of domestic high-speed railroad which has cost a great deal more than any other fields since it was opened; 1) We found out the conditions of current domestic railroad by understanding the status of track maintenance and analyzing operative processes of track maintenance. 2) The main factors in track maintenance of high-speed railroad, that is, the elements for success to help decision-support in track maintenance were derived from a research on literature about the condition of railroad R&D in these days and about the prediction of the irregular progresses of track. 3) We derived the order of priority and weights from AHP analysis which was based on the survey regarding elements for success.

  • Recently, in the total railroad construction field, the concrete slab track is adapted, not ballast track. Because the ballast track have the characteristics doing the ongoing maintenance and difficult to handle increasing maintenance costs, eventually the concrete slab track is selected as an alternative. However, owing to the hydration heat reactions and temperature affected shrinkage cracks related to concrete itself, a variety of studies to solve maintenance problems related to concrete slab track are underway. This study analysed characteristics of TQI values evaluating the track irregularity, searched the relationship between crack progress and TQI, and then evaluated of the correlation between the two values. Through this method, there is a need to complete the problems of the current method, only TQI is the main decision making tool in track maintenance, and also the need for the development of evaluation index considering the crack.

  • The buckling characteristics of the continuous welded rail track(CWR) is uncertainly varied by many influence factors, such as rail temperature, operating conditions of a train and maintenance of the track etc. Therefore, applying the probabilistic approach method is essential to rationally consider uncertainty and randomness of the various parameters that affect the track buckling. In this study, the probabilistic approach analysis was carried out and the results were compared with the deterministic approach using the buckling probability evaluation system of CWR tracks developed by our research team. From the comparison, it was identified that a probabilistic approach can quantitatively assess the reliability of the CWR tracks based on failure probability and can be used as a tool for decision making in track design, maintenance and operating etc.

  • In the decision-making, such as selection of structure, construction method, or time and scheme of maintenance, the evaluation of life-cycle cost(LCC) is of great importance. The maintenance cost occupy a large portion of the LCC of the railway track as well as the initial construction cost. Futhermore, the proportion of the maintenance cost is much higher in the ballasted track. Thus, the importance of the LCC evaluation is higher than in any other engineering structures. In this study, a LCC model that can consider various design parameters such as the type of track structure, annual traffic volume, axle load, train speed, and proportion of curve sections and engineering structures has been developed. Fundamental data for calculating costs also have been presented. Based on the model and data proposed, the trends in the variation of LCC according to the design parameters were examined and the most important design parameters in the LCC analysis of railway track were investigated. The results show that the proportion of renewal and operational costs is much higher in the ballasted track than in the concrete track, and the annual traffic volume and ballast taming period are most significant factors on the LCC of the ballasted track. On the contrary, it is revealed that the proportion of the initial construction costs in the concrete track is much higher, and the LCC of the concrete track is less sensitive to the traffic volume, train speed, and axle load.

  • This paper presents a unique study of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for the maintenance decision making about a real life movable bridge. The mechanical components of movable bridges are maintained on a scheduled basis. However, it is desired to have a condition-based maintenance by taking advantage of SHM. The main objective is to track the operation of a gearbox and a rack-pinion/open gear assembly, which are critical parts of bascule type movable bridges. Maintenance needs that may lead to major damage to these components needs to be identified and diagnosed timely since an early detection of faults may help avoid unexpected bridge closures or costly repairs. The fault prediction of the gearbox and rack-pinion/open gear is carried out using two types of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs): 1) Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Networks (MLP-NNs) and 2) Fuzzy Neural Networks (FNNs). Monitoring data is collected during regular opening and closing of the bridge as well as during artificially induced reversible damage conditions. Several statistical parameters are extracted from the time-domain vibration signals as characteristic features to be fed to the ANNs for constructing the MLP-NNs and FNNs independently. The required training and testing sets are obtained by processing the acceleration data for both damaged and undamaged condition of the aforementioned mechanical components. The performances of the developed ANNs are first evaluated using unseen test sets. Second, the selected networks are used for long-term condition evaluation of the rack-pinion/open gear of the movable bridge. It is shown that the vibration monitoring data with selected statistical parameters and particular network architectures give successful results to predict the undamaged and damaged condition of the bridge. It is also observed that the MLP-NNs performed better than the FNNs in the presented case. The successful results indicate that ANNs are promising tools for maintenance monitoring of movable bridge components and it is also shown that the ANN results can be employed in simple approach for day-to-day operation and maintenance of movable bridges.

  • Due to the car's central role in modern life, the industry has become more fiercely competitive, with each manufacturer doing everything it can to attract buyers with features like plush interiors, comprehensive warranties, and helpful customer service departments. Customers may not have the luxury of buying a new car, so they will have to buy a used car. Nevertheless, in most cases, the customer (car driver) may be deceived about the vehicle information and history and thus will be confused in making his/her decision to purchase. In addition, after all attempts to obtain vehicle information (plate number, model, year of manufacture, number of maintenance times, accidents, etc.), the customer's many attempts may fail. In general, the government records and verifies the information of all cars, even those that pass through their borders. However, there might still be some trouble in obtaining this information. From this standpoint, we will design a website that makes it easier for car drivers, car companies and governments to carry out all the above-mentioned processes. It will also allow users, whether a driver or a car company, to inquire about all vehicle information through detailed and integrated reports on its condition since its entry into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia until the present time, in addition to information supported by numbers and statistics to ensure the integrity and reliability of the information. This platform will save the trouble of searching for car information for drivers and car companies. It will also help governments keep track of the information of all cars entering and leaving the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which will contribute to facilitating the process of viewing the history of any car that has previously entered the Kingdom's borders.
