The purpose of this study was to survey vegetation characteristics of Jeopdo (island) for the construction of a database. We installed and analyzed 52 plots with 100㎡ quadrat to investigate the vegetation characteristics. The community classification based on TWINSPAN found seven categories of vegetation communities in the surveyed region: Pinus thunbergii-Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata community, Carpinus turczaninowii-Quercus variabilis community, Carpinus turczaninowii-Quercus acutissima community, Quercus variabilis-Carpinus turczaninowii community, Castanopsis sieboldii community, and Actinodaphne lancifolia-Camellia japonica community. The vegetation in Jeopdo is largely composed of evergreen conifer trees community (communities I and II), Carpinus turczaninowii-deciduous broad-leaved trees such as Quercus spp. community (communities III, IV, and V), and evergreen broad-leaved trees community (communities VI and VII). The evergreen conifer tree (Quercus serrata) community is currently competing with Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii. The current state is expected to continue due to the lack of forces, such as Castanopsis sieboldii and Actinodaphne lancifolia, in the succession middle stage and climax stage. The current state of Carpinus turczaninowii-deciduous broad-leaved trees such as Quercus spp. community is expected to last for a long time due to slow vegetation development because of soil conditions. The evergreen broad-leaved trees community is transforming from the initial stage of Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii through the stage in Quercus serrata to Castanopsis sieboldii and Actinodaphne lancifolia. The overall ages of the specimens were similar, and the oldest tree was the 59-year old Castanopsis sieboldii. The correlation analysis of major species showed a high positive correlation between Pinus thunbergii and Eurya japonica, Pinus densiflora and Fraxinus sieboldiana, and Actinodaphne lancifolia and Camellia japonica and a high negative correlation between Pinus densiflora and Carpinus turczaninowii and Carpinus turczaninowii and Eurya japonica.

This study was conducted to provide a method of establishing two-storied forests by the adjustment of stand structures in natural deciduous forests of Pyeongchang area. Three permanent sampling plots of 0.09 ha were established in study site and some tree variables were measured in each sampling plot before the treatment of two-storied system. Stand attributes and stand structures before treatment were estimated based on the data measured in sampling plots. The results indicate that the current stand status is different from typical stand structures of two-storied forests. A simulation technique was applied to predict stand attributes and stand structures after the treatment of two-storied system. Results suggest that significant time is required to accomplish target stand structures even after applying the treatment of two-storied system. Number of trees in the upper canopy class after treatment was predicted to be 170 trees/ha, which adequately meets the target of two-storied forests. It was predicted, however, that the lower canopy class trees has much less trees compared with the typical stand structures of two-storied forests. This problem could be solved with ingrowth of infant trees over time or by under-planting of tolerant species. It is confirmed that the target growing stock volumes of the upper canopy class should be approximately $150m^3/ha$ considering stand status after treatment. It is predicted that twenty years of conversion period is required to accomplish this goal. The changes in stand structures over time should be assessed based on stand inventory carried out every five years, and additional treatments for inducing two-storied forests should be applied if necessary.

The purpose of this study is to offer the raw data for improving the method of landscape planting in apartment complex by objective surveying and analysing the growth ratio by type and ground planted in landscape tree. The results are as follows. In the survival ratio of tree, Pinus densiflora was the highest and Abies koreana was the lowest in evergreen tree. In case of deciduous tree, the species of the highest survival ratio were Diospyros kaki, Zelkova serrata, Prunus mume, Lagerstroemia indica and Ginkgo biloba. There showed that Sorbus commixta and Chaenomeles sinensis had the lowest survial ratio. In case of tree growth by types, Pinus strobus was the highest and Pinus densiflora var. globosa was the lowest among evergreen trees. Among deciduous trees, the growth ratio of Zelkova serrata was the highest, and the trees showed the lowest growth were Lagerstroemia indica, Magnolia denudata and Cornus officinalis. Pinus strobus, Cornus kousa, Ginkgo biloba, Chionanthus retusa and Acer palmatum were good growth in natural ground, and Zelkova serrata and Prunus armeniaca var. ansu were good in artificial ground. In the future, if you study the growth characteristics and shrubs that are excluded from the study of landscape trees in various locations are expected to derive objective data.
This study was conducted to reveal tree species preference and inter-specific difference of foraging behavior among four canopy-dwelling birds at forest dominated by Quercus mongolica, Acer pseudosieboldian and Carpinus cordata at 1,000 meters above sea level during breeding season of birds from 1995 to 1997 in Mt. Jumbongsan. Breeding birds were about 25 species and dominant birds were Erithacus cyane, Parus ater and Parus palustris. A relatively high number of bush-nesters can be a characteristic of breeding bird community at study area. Three gleaners (Tits, P. varius, P. palustris and P. ater) selectively preferred the trees irrespective of dominant tree species, whereas bark foragers (Nuthatch, Sitta europaea) utilized the dominant trees. The four birds showed significant inter-specific difference in use of foraging location, but the three tits did not show significant inter-specific difference in use of foraging maneuver and trees. Closely related tits may coexist with each other by inter-specific different use of foraging location determined by foliage structure and leaf arrangement.
The ecological characteristics of Dolbae trees, a valuable genetic resource for native pyrus fruit trees, were investigated at four naturally inhabited areas on Mount Kaya, Gyeongsangnam-Do. Most Dolbae trees were found on the southwest side of an old hiking path to a mountain valley at altitudes of 610∼670 m. The surrounding flora consisted of 46 families, 69 genera, 75 species, and 10 varieties. The natural habitat of the Dolbae trees was basically a deciduous broad-leaved forest with a predominance of Quercus serrata and ligneous plants(xylophytes) from the Fagaceae and Betulaceae families. The habitat was also found to be in a second transition resulting from forest disturbance and exhibited a degree of diversity of 2.901-5.065, based on Shannon-Weiner's index. Examination of the Dolbae trees found in Mount Kaya revealed diameter breast heights(DBHs) ranging from 10 to 60 cm, including six old and large Dolbae trees with a DBH of 50∼60 cm, which will be particularly valuable as a genetic resource. Accordingly, the current results suggest that the study areas are a secondary forest in a typical mid-temperate zone resulting from forest damage about 10 years earlier.
This research is about analysis and evaluation of biodiversity of Suwon's street tree, then understanding the problem of it and finally finding a solution. Because the increasing damage of the street trees by disease and insects, insecticide is applied to prevent further damage. However, this insecticide is found to be cancer genic and causing hygienic threat to civilians. Therefore, by gathering Suwon's internal statistics about Suwon's street tree, the trees are divided into three categories, tall evergreen trees, deciduous trees, shrubs following Frank's 30-20-10 theory(1990). Also, according to species diversity index, the problem of disease and insect is researched in terms of biodiversity, and here we suggests solutions to counter such problems. According to the results, the trees planted in Suwon was found to be 31 families, 43 genus and 58 species. The most used kinds, almost 85% of the whole species, are found to be Rhododendron indicum (L.) Sweet, Buxus koreana Nakai ex Chung & al, Euonymus japonicus Thunb, Ligustrum obtusifolium Siebold & Zucc. Besides these, the rest of 15% of street trees had little variety. Therefore, it is necessary to plant tree variously and equally in terms of biodiversity. If this Frank's 10-20-30 solution is not enough to completely solve coulure problem, then further research will be done on soil properties, and local features for improvement of Suwon street tress.
Conflicts between humans and wild boars (Sus scrofa) have increased because of causing crop damage and appearing in downtown. Management to reduce population size has mostly been implemented on pests, but knowledges about ecological values are very rare. Rubbing trees by wild boar was investigated to figure out characteristics and for management ecologically from July to October 2013 in a mixed forest, Geochang, Gyeongnam Province, Korea. Pinus rigida was most frequently founded, and rubbing trees, both conifers and deciduous, were mainly located in 200~600 m above sea level. DBH was no significant difference between rubbing and control trees. The use intensity of conifers was higher than that of deciduous. The coverage of foliage layers and the number of woody plants within a radius of 2.5 m of trees (rubbing and control) were also investigated and compared to determine ecological characteristics. There were 1,332 individuals founded from 25 families. In the coverage of foliage layers, the understory and midstory showed statistically significant, but not in the subover and overstory. The number of Shrubs and saplings are higher in rubbing trees than those of control, but no difference in stems. Total individuals, the number of species, species diversity index(H') within a radius 2.5 m is considerably higher in rubbing trees with high intensity than those of low intensity and control. Our results show that wild boar mainly selected and used conifers more frequently as rubbing trees. Wild boar also modified the physical environments around rubbing trees. Consequently, the positive effects such as species diversity is increase. Thus the conservation policies is required after the intensive population reduction every 3-4 years for forest ecological management rather than annual sustainable hunting.

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze how many species of trees presented with scientific names are on the written test for engineer landscape architecture, as their usage has increased in the landscape industry in recent years. The following is the result of comparing and analyzing the species of trees which are frequently used in landscape, planting construction, and the scientific name questions presented in the previous 6 years by year on the written test for engineer landscape architecture. First, the results of analyzing the examination question frequency by year in the landscape planting subject showed a gradually declining trend from 2014 after peaking at 56.6% in 2013. Second, 163 species of trees using scientific names were presented in questions on the written test for engineer landscape architecture over the previous 6 years and these included Betula platyphylla, Sophora japonica, Cercis chinensis, Taxus cuspidata. The number of species of trees used in landscape construction during the same period was 169 including Pinus densiflora, Chionanthus retusus, Cornus officinalis, Syringa dilatata. The result of interviews with landscape planting construction officials showed that when choosing the species of trees, they emphasize ecological characteristics, such as the ratio of trees to shrubs, flowers and autumn leaf characteristics, and also consider the morphological characteristics, landscape characteristics, economic feasibility, and the supply and demand situation. Third, it was found that 70 (42.9%) out of 163 species of trees presented with scientific names on the examination were not used in landscape planting construction and 76 (44.9%) out of 169 species were not used as material for questions. As for the scientific name questions, deciduous trees and evergreen shrubs accounted for the more questions, Evergreen and deciduous tree and shrubs were most common in landscape planting construction as well.
This study was conducted to clarified the relationship between bird community and forest structure and present the counterplan for protection and management of bird community from February 1993 to July 1995 at deciduous and coniferous forest within Mt. Nam area, Seoul, Korea. DBH distribution has not significant differences in each study site. Deciduous forest had more foliage coverage in all layers than coniferous forest. Total 41 species of birds, which were 16 species of resident, 14 species of summer visitor, 4 species of winter visitor, and 7 species of passage migrant were recrded in two study sites. Leaf use rate of birds was increased the increase of coverage. The number of breeding species and pairs, breeding density, and diversity index were greater in deciduous forest than coniferous forest. The number of species and pairs on bush-nesting and foraging guild were greater than other guilds. And the nuber of species and pairs on hole nesting guild were the fewest in nesting guild. Use rate of artificial nests for improvement of habitat quality was greater in coniferous forest than deciduous forest. Maintenance of bush layer, increase of coverage and leaf layer diversity, supply of artificial nests, management of large trees, and control of natural enemy were necessary for protection and management of bird community in Mt. nam area.
Vegetational structure and successional sere were investigated for the evergreen and nearby deciduous broad-leaved forests in inland areas (Turyunsan, Pulgapsan) and south- western island areas (Hongdo, Chindo). The evergreen broad-leaved forests of the four areas showed a sera1 stage with an age structure mostly under fifty years old. Dominant evergreen broad-leaved species in canopy layer were Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Machilus thunbergii, Quercus acuta, Q. stenophylla, Q. glauca, and Ncolitsea serzceu. Succession of the forest vegetation in the surveyed areas was proceeding from deciduous broad-leaved trees to evergreen broad-leaved trees. The species of climax stage were assumed to be Machilus thunbergii, iVeolitseu sericea and Dendropanax morbifera in canopy layer, Aucuba japonica and Machilus japonica in subtree and shrub layer.
