  • Disinfection characteristics of mixed oxidants produced by mean of electro-chemical method were evaluated. Inactivation rate of B. subtilis spore on the mixed oxidants were similar with that of chlorine. Based on the experimental results, activation energy of mixed oxidants and chlorine with B. subtilis spore at pH 8.3 were calculated as 30.8, $34.7kJ{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ respectively. UV absorption spectrum of both chlorine and mixed oxidants present similar. Molar extinction coefficients of chlorine and mixed oxidants at 292nm, which is maximum absorption wavelength of $OCl^-$ were 357, $377M^{-1}cm^{-1}$, respectively. Disinfectant decay rate and formation rate of THM in the S WTP filtrate also shows insignificant difference for both mixed oxidants and chlorine. In consequent, it was confirmed that high portion of chlorine presents in the mixed oxidants.

  • Indoor air quality can be affected by indoor sources, ventilation, decay and outdoor levels. Although technologies exist to measure these factors, direct measurements are often difficult. The purpose of this study was to develop an alternative method to characterize indoor environmental factors by multiple indoor and outdoor measurements. Using a mass balance model and regression analysis, penetration factor (ventilation rate divided by the sum of ventilation rate and deposition constant) and source strength factor (source strength divided by the sum of ventilation rate and deposition constant) were calculated using multiple indoor and outdoor measurements. Subsequently, the ventilation rate and $NO_2$ generation rate were estimated. Mean of ventilation rate was 1.41 ACH in houses, assuming a residential N02 deposition constant of 0.94 $hr^{-1}$. Mean generation rate of $NO_2$ was 16.5 ppbv/hr. According to house characterization, inside smoking and family number were higher $NO_2$ generation rates, and apartment was higher than single-family house. In conclusion, indoor environmental factors were effectively characterized by this method using multiple indoor and outdoor measurements.

  • An important source of noise from railways is rolling noise caused by wheel and rail vibrations induced by acoustic roughness at the wheel-rail contact. In the present paper, characteristics of rail vibration and radiated sound power from concrete slab tracks for domestic high speed train(KTX) is investigated by means of a numerical method. The waveguide finite element and boundary element are combined and applied for this analysis. The concrete slab track is modelled simply with a rail and rail pad regarding the concrete slab as a rigid ground. The wave types which contribute significantly to the rail vibration and radiated noise are identified in terms of the mobility and decay rates. In addition, the effect of the rail pad stiffness on the radiated power is examined for two different rail pad stiffnesses.

Daily indoor and outdoor $NO_2$ concentrations were measured for 30 consecutive days in 28 houses in Brisbane, Australia, and for 21 consecutive days in 37 houses in Seoul, Korea. Using a mass balance model and regression analysis, penetration factor (ventilation rate divided by the sum of ventilation rate and deposition constant) and source strength factor (source strength divided by the sum of ventilation rate and deposition constant) were calculated using multiple indoor and outdoor measurements. Subsequently, the ventilation rate and $NO_2$ source strength were estimated. Geometric means of ventilation rate were 1.44 ACH in Brisbane, assuming a residential $NO_2$ deposition constant of 1.05 $hr^{-1}$, and 1.36 ACH in Seoul, with the measured residential $NO_2$ deposition constant of 0.94 $hr^{-1}$. Source strengths of $NO_2$ were 15.8 $\pm$ 18.2 ${\mu}g$/$m^3$.hr and 44.7 $\pm$ 38.1${\mu}g$/$m^3$.hr in Brisbane and Seoul, respectively. In conclusion, indoor environmental factors were effectively characterized by this method using multiple indoor and outdoor measurements.

  • The regulator problem can be considered as some impulsive disturbance rejection one. In this point of view, the rate of decay is one of important factors for regulation and depends on how negative the real parts of the eigenvalues of closed-loop system. The algorithm that the closed-loop system has eigenvalues lying within a vertical. strip is useful for rapid disturbance rejection. This paper presents a design method for a linear quadratic regulator of two-time scale system with eigenvalues in a vertical strip by use of time-scale separation property.

  • The containment local leakage rate testing in nuclear power plants is performed in accordance with ANSI/ANS-56.8(1994) in Korea. Two methods, the make-up flow rate and the pressure decay, are used for LLRT. Though ANSI/ANS-56.8 does not define clearly the minimum test duration for the make-up flow rate method, it requires obtaining the data after reaching the stable condition. Thus the prerequisite stable condition for data acquisition and the test period for type "C" LLRT is differently applied to each NPPs. Therefore, this study presents a unified test criteria for data stabilization and test duration through experiments to improve the test reliability for type "C".

  • This paper presents a method for estimating parameters of high frequency transient signals when noise is added. The parameters to be estimated are the magnitude, frequency, and decay rate of the signals. An approach based on only the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is highly dependent on choosing a correct value of variance of noise. The proposed method adopts an adaptive Kalman filter (AKF). Having very little information of the noise, This method avoids deterioration of the filter performance caused by choosing an inaccurate variance of the noise. The dependence of the EKF method upon the noise variance and the efficiency of the AKF method are shown.

  • The damping parameter of Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm switches between error backpropagation and Gauss-Newton learning and affects learning speed. Fixing the damping parameter induces some oscillation of error and decreases learning speed. Therefore, we propose the way of a variable damping parameter with referring to the alternation of error. The proposed method makes the damping parameter increase if error rate is large and makes it decrease if error rate is small. This method so plays the role of momentum that it can improve learning speed. We tested both iris recognition and wine recognition for this paper. We found out that this method improved learning speed in 67% cases on iris recognition and in 78% cases on wine recognition. It was also showed that the oscillation of error by the proposed way was less than those of other algorithms.

  • Interzonal air movements are important to characterize overall ventilation performance of complicated multi-zone buildings. Tracer gas techniques are widely used to measure ventilation rates, ventilation effectiveness, and interzonal air movements. Depending on the number of gases used, they are divided into single and multi tracer gas methods. This paper deals with the comparison of the tracer gas methods in measuring air exchange rate between rooms. Experiments have been conducted in a simple two-room model with known airflow rates. In multi-gas procedure, the concentration decays of two tracer gases, i.e SF6 and R134a are measured after simultaneous injections in each room. The single tracer gas method is also applied by injecting SF6 gas with a time lag between two rooms. The data reduction procedures are developed to obtain the interzonal airflow rate using the matrix inversion, and various data manipulation methods are tested, such as data shift, interpolation, and smoothing. Uncertainty for each airflow rate is investigated depending on the parameters based on the setting values.
