  • A new design concept for a decay heat removal system in a liquid metal reactor is proposed. The new design utilizes a thermosyphon to enhance the heat removal capacity and its heat transfer characteristics are analyzed against the current PSDRS (Passive Safety Decay heat Removal System) in the KAL IMER (Korea Advanced LIquid MEtal Reactor) design. The preliminary analysis results show that the new design with a thermosyphon yields substantial increase of 20∼40% in the decay heat removal capacity compared to the current design that do not have the thermosyphon. The new design reduces the temperature rise in the cooling air of the system and helps the surrounding structure in maintaining its mechanical integrity for long term operation at an accident. Also the analysis revealed the characteristics of the interactions among various heat transfer modes in the new design.

  • The MRX is an integral type ship reactor with 100 MWt power, which is designed by Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. It is characterized by integral type PWR, in-vessel type control roe drive mechanism, water-filled containment vessel and passive decay heat removal system. Marine reactor should have high passive safety. Therefore, in this study, we simulated the loss of flow accident to verify the passive decay heat removal by natural circulation using RETRAN-03 code. auxiliary feed water systems are used for decay heat removal mechanism and results are compared with the loss of flow accident analysis using emergency decay heat removal system by JAERI. Results are very similar to case of EDRS 1 loop operation in JAERI analysis and decay heat is successfully removed by natural circulation.

  • Twenty sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) have provided valuable experience in design, licensing, and operation. This paper summarizes the important safety criteria and safety guidelines of intermediate sodium systems, steam generators, decay heat removal systems and associated construction materials and in-service inspection. The safety criteria and guidelines provide a sufficient framework for design and licensing, in particular by new entrants in SFRs.

  • The air-cooled passive decay heat removal system (APDHR) was proposed to provide the ultimate heat sink for non-LOCA accidents. The APDHR is a modified one of Passive Auxiliary Feed-water system (PAFS) installed in APR+. The PAFS has a heat exchanger in the Passive Condensate Cooling Tank (PCCT) and can remove decay heat for 8 h. After that, the heat transfer rate through the PAFS drastically decreases because the heat transfer condition changes from water to air. The APDHR with a vertical heat exchanger in PCCT will be able to remove the decay heat by air if it has sufficient natural convection in PCCT. We conducted the thermal-hydraulic simulation by the MARS code to investigate the behavior of the APR + selected as a reference plant for the simulation. The simulation contains two phases based on water depletion: the early phase and the late phase. In the early phase, the volume of water in PCCT was determined to avoid the water depletion in three days after shutdown. In the late phase, when the number of the HXs is greater than 4089 per PCCT, the MARS simulation confirmed the long-term cooling by air is possible under extended Station Blackout (SBO).

  • A sodium-cooled demonstration fast reactor with the KALIMER-600 as a reference plant is under design by KAERI. The safety grade decay heat removal system (DHRS), which is important to mitigate design basis accidents, was changed in the reactor design. A loss of heat sink and a vessel leak in design basis accidents were simulated using the MARS-LMR system transient analysis code on two plant systems. In the analyses, the DHRS of KALIMER-600 had a weakness due to elevation of the overflow path for the DHRS operation, while it was proved that the DHRS of the demonstration reactor had superior heat transfer characteristics due to the simplified heat transfer mechanism.

  • A Prototype Gen-IV Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor which is one of the $4^{th}$ generation nuclear reactors is in development by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The reactor is composed of four main fluid systems which are categorized by its functions, i.e., Primary Heat Transport System, Intermediate Heat Transport System, Decay Heat Removal System and Sodium-Water Reaction Pressure Relief System. The coolant of the reactor is liquid sodium and sodium-to-sodium heat exchangers are installed at the interfaces between two fluid systems, Intermediate Heat Exchangers between the Primary Heat Transport System and the Intermediate Heat Transport System and Decay Heat Exchangers between the Primary Heat Transport System and the Decay Heat Removal System. For the design and performance analysis of the Intermediate Heat Exchanger and the Decay Heat Exchanger, a computer code was written during previous step of research. In this work, the computer code named "SHXSA" has been validated preliminarily by computational fluid dynamics simulations.

  • Spent nuclear fuel generated at nuclear power plants must be safely stored during interim storage periods. A dry storage cask to safely store the spent nuclear fuel should be able to adequately emit the decay heat from the spent nuclear fuel. Therefore, heat removal tests using a half scale dry storage cask have been performed to estimate the heat transfer characteristics of a dry storage cask under normal, off-normal, and accident conditions. In the normal condition, the heat transfer rate to an ambient atmosphere by convective air through a passive heat removal system reached 83%. Accordingly, the passive heat removal system is designed well and works adequately. In the off-normal condition, the influence of a half blockage in the inlet on the temperature appears minimal. In the accident condition, the temperature rose for 12 hours after the accident, but the temperature rise steadied after 36 hours.

  • The FHX (Forced-draft sodium-to-air Heat Exchanger) employed in the ADHRS (active decay heat removal system) is a shell-and-tube type counter-current flow heat exchanger with M-shape finned-tube arrangement. Liquid sodium flows inside the heat transfer tubes and atmospheric air flows over the finned tubes. The unit is placed in the upper region of the reactor building and has function of dumping the system heat load into the final heat sink, i.e., the atmosphere. Heat is transmitted from the primary cold sodium pool into the ADHRS sodium loop via DHX (decay heat exchanger), and a direct heat exchange occurs between the tube-side sodium and the shell-side air through the FHX tube wall. This paper describes the DHRS and the structural design of the FHX.

  • The geometrical and electromagnetic variables of a rectangular-type magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) circulation system are optimized to solve MHD equations for the active decay heat removal system of a prototype Gen-IV sodium fast reactor. Decay heat must be actively removed from the reactor coolant to prevent the reactor system from exceeding its temperature limit. A rectangular-type MHD circulation system is adopted to remove this heat via an active system that produces developed pressure through the Lorentz force of the circulating sodium. Thus, the rectangular-type MHD circulation system for a circulating loop is modeled with the following specifications: a developed pressure of 2 kPa and flow rate of $0.02m^3/s$ at a temperature of 499 K. The MHD equations, which consist of momentum and Maxwell's equations, are solved to find the minimum input current satisfying the nominal developed pressure and flow rate according to the change of variables including the magnetic flux density and geometrical variables. The optimization shows that the rectangular-type MHD circulation system requires a current of 3976 A and a magnetic flux density of 0.037 T under the conditions of the active decay heat removal system.

  • After the Fukushima accident in 2011, it was revealed that nuclear power plant has the vulnerability to SBO accident and its extension situation without sufficient cooling of reactor core resulting core meltdown and radioactive material release even after reactor shutdown. Many safety systems had been developed like PAFS, hybrid SIT, and relocation of RPV and IRWST as a part of steps for the Fukushima accident, however, their applications have limitation in the situation that supply of feedwater into reactor is impossible due to high pressure inside reactor pressure vessel. The concept of hybrid heat pipe with control rod is introduced for breaking through the limitation. Hybrid heat pipe with control rod is the passive decay heat removal system in core, which has the abilities of reactor shutdown as control rod as well as decay heat removal as heat pipe. For evaluating the cooling performance hybrid heat pipe, a commercial CFD code, ANSYS-CFX was used. First, for validating CFD results, numerical results and experimental results with same geometry and fluid conditions were compared to a tube type heat pipe resulting in a resonable agreement between them. After that, wall temperature and thermal resistances of 2 design concepts of hybrid heat pipe were analyzed about various heat inputs. For unit length, hybrid heat pipe with a tube type of $B_4C$ pellet has a decreasing tendency of thermal resistance, on the other hand, hybrid heat pipe with an annular type $B_4C$ pellet has an increasing tendency as heat input increases.
