  • Objectives : Depression is a common mental illness and a major cause of suicide. Although serum lipids have been associated with depression and suicide, there has been much debate. In this study, we investigated the relationship between depression, suicide, and serum lipids in patients admitted with depressed mood. Methods : A total of 134 subjects were divided into 86 non-suicide patients and 48 suicide attempters. The serum lipid levels and sub-scores of the Korean Symptom Checklist-95 (KSCL95) were compared. We also investigated the relationship between serum lipids and sub-scores of KSCL95 and investigated whether serum lipids were risk factors for suicide attempts. Results : There was no difference in serum lipids between the two groups. Among the sub-items of KSCL95, obsession was higher in non-suicide group. Triglyceride showed positive correlations with anxiety, phobic anxiety, agoraphobia, schizophrenia, and self-regulation problem. High triglyceride was a risk factor for suicide attempts. Conclusions : Triglyceride is associated with depression, anxiety, and self - regulation, and high serum triglyceride levels may be a risk factor for suicide attempts.

  • Recently, the establishment of the Special Act on National Research and Development(tentatively named) has been discussed with the aim of providing a legal basis for the comprehensive management of national research and development programs, which have thus far been independently implemented by government ministries. This paper analyzes the legislative process of the Framework Act on Science and Technology(hereafter, the "Framework Act") introduced for a similar purpose in 2001. By examining who had proposed various versions of the legislation prior to the enactment of the Framework Act, and which draft bill was derived ultimately through controversies, this paper will present the following two arguments: First, the obsession with a single regulation that can be applicable to all national research and development programs may lead to unintended consequences, given that the history of national research and development programs, each of which has been implemented by different government ministries, is quite long. Second, the Framework Act has an impact to date while it consistently internalizes the very unique orientations, as the concepts of "national competitiveness" and "national innovation system" postulate, even though it failed to establish an integrated rule. The case of the Framework Act will be a window through which one can glimpse how the present debate on the enactment of the Special Act on National Research and Development shall proceed, and further, reflect on the issues that were overlooked.

  • Since the recent restoration of the Sungnyemun gate (South gate of Seoul) which was burnt down in 2008, there were dispute about the application of traditional technique for the conservation of cultural heritage. In this research, the definition of traditional technique for cultural heritage conservation is thought and mentioned. In general, the understanding of traditional technique is based on the idea of 'tradition'. Tradition is not defined as a 'eternal doctrine existence', but a 'development of succession' and a 'living existence'. Thus 'traditional performance and craft as intangible cultural heritage' is defined as 'intangible' which also makes it difficult to define the 'original form/state' from 'the conservation of the original form' which is a major principle of cultural heritage. In case of Korea, if the 'traditional technique as intangible cultural heritage' is put into application to cultural heritage conservation, the unclear definition will cause many problems in the restoration/conservation site. This is because the site will apply this technique without any discussion of the range and limitation of 'traditional technique'. This means there will be the lack of discussion for the conservation of the cultural heritage which will not have a strict criteria for the allowable range of usage for the 'traditional material' using the vaguely defined 'traditional technique'. In this study, these application issues of the traditional technique were also considerecl, comparing the development of international wnservation principles. As a result, the conservation of 'traditional technique as intangible cultural heritage' is important, but the 'technique left inside the tangible cultural heritage' which is the 'material which is carrying the technique when it was firstly built' has more importance to preserve and need to be in the major considerations.

  • Although a study on documentation strategy has been steadily releasing recently in the archival study field, it is rare that the cases or studies applying the institutional functional analysis methodology that Helen Samuels had suggested. The institutional functional analysis is a methodology to provide a comprehensive understanding of the record by defining the essential features of the institution at a macro level. The documentation area derived from the institutional functional analysis functions as a priori framework for an archivist to select and keep the records of the institution. In other words, by analyzing the function of the institution through the institutional functional analysis methodology, it makes possible to identify the functions not covered under the current records retention schedule at a macro level ensuring accountability of the organization's business activities. The documentation project of the United States is a prime example to comply with this background. In this study, by analyzing the case of the United States Congress, it is proposed the derived implications for applying the institutional functional analysis to the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, where is the similar national institution to the U.S. Congress. For this purpose, firstly, the theoretical debate on the institutional functional analysis as the previous studies. Secondly, the documentation project of the United States Congress has been case analyzed by each function according to the institutional functional analysis. Thirdly, on the basis of the case study results, the implications are derived and it is suggested that the documentation areas applicable to the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea.

  • The term new tobacco products (NTPs) refers to the new alternatives to conventional cigarettes. There are several kinds of NTPs in South Korea. The present study discusses the most widely used NTPs namely electronic cigarette (ECs) and heated tobacco products (HTPs). The aims of this study are to evaluate the risk related to the use of ECs and HTPs, introduce policy examples across different countries of management of this issue, and finally, present some policy implications of the problem and our response strategies. Since the advent of ECs, there has been a lot of debate about its risk. Some studies have reported that ECs are less harmful than conventional cigarettes and that they are effective in aiding smoking cessation. Nevertheless, the efficacy of ECs in smoking cessation and its potential health risks are still unclear. However, the obvious fact is that it is not harmless. Regulations on ECs differ from country to country. In many countries, they are strictly regulated as tobacco or toxic substances; however, in the United Kingdom, the use of ECs are included as part of their smoking cessation policy, and in Japan, they are treated as a form of medication. On the other hand, HTPs are the most recently introduced NTPs and they have attained sensational popularity because of the wrongly held belief that they are less harmful to health. So, what about our policy response to these two tobacco products? The research on ECs requires more systematic statistical monitoring, such as monitoring the ratio of dual-users. Further, the new EC smokers should be identified taking into account that the arguments for the use of ECs often emphasize smoking cessation or less risks to health, the government should further strengthen its policy to prevent those claims. The HTPs market experienced a very sharp growth and continues to grow because the government policy is too passive. Taking this as a lesson, it is necessary to approach NTPs, such as HTPs, proactively and increase their contribution to the National Health Promotion Fund by imposing greater taxes on them. Finally, considering the likelihood of NTPs being promoted as a less harmful tobacco product, it is essential to strictly regulate tobacco companies' publicity from the very beginning to ensure that potential consumer s are not mislead.

  • Objective : The efficacy of preoperative embolization for hypervascular metastatic spine disease (MSD) such as renal cell and thyroid cancers has been reported. However, the debate on the efficacy of preoperative embolization for non-hypervascular MSD still remains unsettled. The purpose of this study is to determine whether preoperative embolization for non-hypervascular MSD decreases perioperative blood loss. Methods : A total of 79 patients (36 cases of preoperative embolization and 43 cases of non-embolization) who underwent surgery for metastatic spine lesions were included. Representative hypervascular tumors such as renal cell and thyroid cancers were excluded. Intraoperative and perioperative estimated blood losses (EBL), total number of transfusion and calibrated EBL were recorded in the embolization and non-embolization groups. The differences in EBL were also compared along with the type of surgery. In addition, the incidence of Adamkiewicz artery and complications of embolization were assessed. Results : The average age of 50 males and 29 females was $57.6{\pm}13.5$ years. Lung (30), hepatocellular (14), gastrointestinal (nine) and others (26) were the primary cancers. The demographic data was not significantly different between the embolization and the non-embolization groups. There were no significant differences in intraoperative EBL, perioperative EBL, total transfusion and calibrated EBL between two groups. However, intraoperative EBL and total transfusion in patients with preoperative embolization were significantly lower than in non-embolization in the corpectomy group (1645.5 vs. 892.6 mL, p=0.017 for intraoperative EBL and 6.1 vs. 3.9, p=0.018 for number of transfusion). In addition, the presence of Adamkiewicz artery at the index level was noted in two patients. Disruption of this major feeder artery resulted in significant changes in intraoperative neuromonitoring. Conclusion : Preoperative embolization for non-hypervascular MSD did not reduce perioperative blood loss. However, the embolization significantly reduced intraoperative bleeding and total transfusion in corpectomy group. Moreover, the procedure provided insights into the anatomy of tumor and spinal cord vasculature.

  • NOS education through the history of science is regarded effective. However, science teaching has been criticized for not considering the interest of the learners enough and providing the context of learning themes that hinder the understanding of NOS. This study intends to convey the NOS element through the rich context of storytelling. The theme of the story is the history of continental drift, in which, the debate of many scientists and Wegener's creativity are prominent. Of the various media that deliver storytelling, the most powerful medium that leads to personal immersion is computer games, and among many kinds of games, the main genre of storytelling is role-playing games (RPGs). We developed the science history role-playing game (SHRPG) focusing on continental drift. The game development procedure followed Kim's 4F process (2017), which consists of the Figure Out, Focus, Fun Design, and Finalize. The story was constructed based on the NOS elements of Lederman et al. (2002), namely creativity and imagination demand, subjectivity, socio-cultural personality and tentativeness, which are all present in the story of the continental drift theory. The mechanics and rules of the RPG included quests, rewards, quizzes, NOS scores, and rankings. In the final phase of development, the game developed was pilot tested four times. The results of the tests showed that students' understanding of NOS through SHRPG has increased, especially in the creativity domain. The students' satisfaction with the fun, sympathy, and immersion during the game was very high.

  • Cognitive science attempts to explain human intelligence on the basis of success of artificial neural network, which is called connectionism. The neural network, e.g., deep learning, seemingly promises connectionism to go beyond what it is. But those(Fodor & Pylyshyn, Fodor, & McLaughlin) who advocate classical computationalism, or symbolism claim that connectionism must fail since it cannot represent the relation between human thoughts and human language. The neural network lacks systematicity, so any output of neural network is at best association or accidental combination of data plugged in input units. In this paper, I first introduce structure of artificial neural network and what connectionism amounts to. Second, I shed light on the problem of systematicity the classical computationalists pose for the connectionists. Third, I briefly introduce how those who advocate connectionism respond to the criticism while noticing Smolensky's theory of vector product. Finally, I examine the debate of computationalism and connectionism on systematicity, and show how the problem of systematicity contributes to the development of connectionism and computationalism both.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the contents related to the strata in the elementary science textbooks and to investigate the strata concepts of preservice elementary teachers. As a result of the study, most of the strata knowledge in elementary textbook has an explicit sentence structure, such as A is B. it is limited to being used as a subject of discussion and debate among students in science classes. Formal knowledge, although its meaning is clear, is disadvantageous as a material for core competency education. Regarding strata concepts, 70% of preservice elementary teachers thoughts that heat and pressure were the only key factors in turning sediments into hard rocks. Regarding whether information about the natural information in the geological period can be obtained through the strata, 20% thought that information on the natural environment could be obtained only through fossils and not from the strata. Even 80% of preservice elementary school teachers who thought that informations on the past natural environment could be obtained from the stratum showed a lot of scientific misconceptions in the information contents. In conclusion, in order to increase the effect of core competency education through elementary science education, it is necessary to review the form and contents of strata knowledge presented in elementary science textbooks.

  • This study analyzed the proof of the inverse square law, which is said to be the core of Newton's , in relation to the geometric limit. Newton, conscious of the debate over infinitely small, solved the dynamics problem with the traditional Euclid geometry. Newton reduced mechanics to a problem of geometry by expressing force, time, and the degree of inertia orbital deviation as a geometric line segment. Newton was able to take Euclid's geometry to a new level encompassing dynamics, especially by introducing geometric limits such as parabolic approximation, polygon approximation, and the limit of the ratio of the line segments. Based on this analysis, we proposed to use Newton's geometric limit as a tool to show the usefulness of mathematics, and to use it as a means to break the conventional notion that the area of the curve can only be obtained using the definite integral. In addition, to help the desirable use of geometric limits in school mathematics, we suggested the following efforts are required. It is necessary to emphasize the expansion of equivalence in the micro-world, use some questions that lead to use as heuristics, and help to recognize that the approach of ratio is useful for grasping the equivalence of line segments in the micro-world.
